Character Build

Hey all, I just started playing this game over the weekend, and am really having a lot of fun.  I'm pretty much a soloer, but like to group from time to time.  I've tried two "builds", the first being destined for the dustbin since I had no clue what I was doing.  He was an Illuminati who was working the pistol tree exclusively, but I couldn't think of a second skillset to blend in with it, so I set him aside for the time being.

Next I tried a Dragon Elementalist/Sword wielder, and by comparison, she is bringing major league whoopass to the table.  The elemental skills let me pull, or do ranged damage, and the sword provides AE, defense, some minor self healing, and DPS.  She is really a force, but I'm worried about the longterm viability of the elementalist/sword combo, will this work down the road?

You dont need to reroll.  It seems like your in the calss based game mindset, which is ok, takes some time to get out of that.

AP is constant, youll gain 1 AP for that kingsmouth zombie quest when you start out, and when you go back to that quest in 3 months youll still get 1 AP for doing it.

What you should do is stick to one character, only reason to reroll is for a new faction storyline, nothing else.  Your not gimping yourself in this game, all AP spent is AP well spent especially at the start. SP is where you will gimp yourself, only spend SP when you have a weapon or talisman you cant use but want to.

I would suggest working on the inner skills of 3-4 different weapon types.  Pick at least assault rifle, fist, or blood magic since they can be used for survivability builds youll need later...your going to want something that returns health or heals you down the road.

Next pick a DPS weapon and pair it with another DPS weapon.  From the start youll want a single target builder, one that states "builds resources for both equipped weapons"  this weapon will allow you to use two finishers after only 5 attacks.

As to what weapons to pair? http://forums.thesecretworld.com/showthread.php?t=25719  this thread has a lot of info and charts.

You dont need to have weapons that synergize, i use pistols and shotgun which dont really share effects but works great for me.

If you choose for instance..Sword/Elementalism/ Assualt Rifle and start filling out with two builds...one for raw DPS and one for lets say, a good single target survivability build with Assault rifle leeches to heal you...youll be set for solo questing as well as the storyline boss fights that can be endurance fights where youll need to heal yourself somehow.

Worst case scenario if you dont like a weapon...run a dungeons a few times use the AP and SP from it to start a new weapon...theres no giming since you can get every skill eventually and theres no "race" to endgame in this game.

Ive abandond about 2 weapons thus far and i have about 4 weapons that im skilled well in, with 2 specifically im very deep into.  I want to get to a point where i can tank heal or DPS for dungeons but that will take a long time.

I just got the game this past weekend and still feeling myself out. Right now I'm working on a shotgun/fists combination.  Not in any rush and just enjoying the fact I can play around with  any skills I want again for the first time in years without having to roll an alt.

    Currently Playing: World of Warcraft

Later on you will need multiple builds to do all the missions and if you solo most of the time you better learn the abiltiy wheel.

Right now my passives are across 5 weapons sets and I am running Ele/Ham so it become more than just your two choosen weapons.

Thanks for all the great replies, can't wait to jump back into the game, it's really a lot of fun.

I'm really happy to hear that the difficulty of painting yourself into a corner, buildwise is rather high.  So far it's just been fun to experiment with various combinations of attacks.
