Arktos Entertainment and Hammerpoint Interactive are looking to strike while the zombie-slaying iron is hot with a new zombie apocalypse MMO set to release as early as this Fall.
The War Z, or TWZ for short, is set five years after a viral outbreak decimated humanity, leaving those who remain to struggle for survival in a lawless environment also populated with hordes of undead zombies. Players will have to seek out supplies, food, and weapons in order to survive.
TWZ will feature both normal and hardcore modes, the latter of which will feature permadeath and can be played in either a third or first person perspective. The game's environments will range anywhere fromm 200-400 square kilometers and will be host to a variety of both PvE and PvP gameplay, including bounties, trap setting, help requests, and more.
While the developers intend for TWZ to be a dangerous world, there will be several safe settlements for players to congregate in order to trade and store items or even post notes for other players to find.
The War Z will only require a single purchase of the game (no subscription fee) and is currently in Alpha.

Getting a little tired of Zombies. I just don't get it. Fad.
Interesting! I got this The Walking Dead vibe going on now.
Good concepts, hope it pans out, really would enjoy a game like this if its feature complete and made well.
Another nice copycat of DayZ
Warz was being worked on before DayZ was even created.
I'm not sure what to think of this. The fact they have chosen the 'Z' in the name to bring in connotations from Day-Z seems deliberate. I know the Z is for like 'zombie', but it looks like an audience steal.. and that's not a good sign. Unless it's based on the World War Z novel.. but I doubt it since there is no mention of that.
Yeh I'm pretty cynical but I like my zombies and just hope it's a serious attempt.
I love zombies, can't kill enough of them in TSW, in fact, I go out of my way to kill them sometimes because its just so darn fun.
Looks like one for me to check out

I'm always up for some zombie survival horror.

I should have been specific, I meant in connection with the features. Those features make it sound a lot like Day-Z. Even if this game was in development before Day-Z, was there ever a feature list before then or is this the first time they have been given? Because it really does like look a copy attempt.
Not that I mind a copy, or evolution of Day-Z.. I just hope it's a good one.
WILL this be the DayZ we've all been waiting for?
My interest will depend upon which type of zombies they use. If fast (which aren't really zombies) than no thank you. If slow 'traditional' zombies, then color me interested.
It is a zombie apocalypse MMO there is only so many different ways you can do it so even if they started before day z people are going to say they are coping it. Even all zombie movies end up looking the same with just different settings, even stories for survival and methods are similar.
Again
Warz was being made before DayZ was an idea.
I understand what you're saying. There's a decent interview for The War Z at IGN right now, seems they've only worked on it about a year or so, kinda worrying, they're asked the exact thing you're wondering though.
this is what they said.

Q:IGN: OK, so let's just get this out of the way right off the bat: How much was this game a reaction to the success of DayZ? Was this in development before the Alpha's release in April?
A: We started thinking about doing a zombie game last year and began developing a quest-based MMO set in a large, zombie infested world. Players would be able to explore and “unlock” new areas on the map as they progress through quests assigned to them in-game. When DayZ was released to the public we were really excited to see another game that was akin to what we were working on – we were like “wow, that’s cool, we’re not the only ones making something like this." As we saw the popularity of DayZ grow, and how players and the community were reacting, we realized two things – first, there was validation that our idea of making a zombie MMO was actually right and that there is a market/player base for it, and second, we decided to abandon the idea of unlocking parts of the map as you progress – rather, the player will be able to freely roam the world and gather information and quests by exploring notes, diaries, etc left behind by both real players and NPCs.
So short answer – while we began developing our game before DayZ, we've been encouraged by fact that DayZ has become so popular. And yes, of course some of our latest design decisions were influenced by the DayZ community forums.

Interesting that they're using Dayz feedback in their development.

A fad... Zombies Ate My Neighbors. Nuff said.
"I am not in a server with Gankers...THEY ARE IN A SERVER WITH ME!!!"
i'm a huge fan of DayZ and have been supporting and promoting it for a while now, but i've come to the conclusion that i really don't care if Rocket makes the stand alone first or not. i couldn't care if freekin bliz made it, trion, perfect world, or even some random joe's crab shack development team. all i want is a game with the same basics as DayZ, that handles the need for friendly grouping, that gives us a reason to play once we gear up rather then just kill random players that come into our AO, has less issues when updating, and is nearly bug free.
Rocket has a good idea with making underground compounds, but the way they are moving along makes me think it will be a while before we get all of that into a stand alone version. i believe him when he says he can get a stand alone out by the end of the year, but i think it would just be what we're playing now without all the bugs.
and LOL at it being a fad. money talks, and the sales that DayZ has gotten for Arma 2 make a lot of noise. people have been into zombies before the walking dead hit the tv. there's a reason this genre has always done fairly well in all types of media.
Zombies aren't a "fad"
and Z being put after a word wasn't invented by DayZ.
Where do you people come up with this stuff?
If zombies are a fad, then I hope the fad doesn't end until im (un)dead....sorry I know that was bad. But seriously, I HATE zombies, like I dispease the things. Which is why I enjoy every game with them just so I can kill them. Still we got DayZ(which I think features olympic athelete err fast zombies right, which I despise?) Hoping then either this(The War Z) or if Class4 from Undead Labs ever comes out will ever create my dream of a zombie game. That kind of features obviously the zombie killing, but also building settlements, and farming like Harvest Moon or something to have sustained food, and various other activities. After all if you're doing a zombie survival MMO, you kinda gotta have more than just killing other humans and zombies on the table, since some people wont be into PvP and might get bored with zombies.
If you want a fantastic zombie/horror MMO play The Secret World.
free to play after the box purchase? sure why not ... I will follow and if it looks promising I will probably give it a try.
A zombie MMO huh? So begins the new MMOSHG. (Massively Multiplayer Online Survival Horror Game)
Keeping an eye on this one, should be fun.
You know what's fun about chaos? I do, but I won't tell.
FINALLY! Let's hope it's good...hopes have been crushed so many, many times already.
what does DayZ think of War Z ?
