Since al the NDAs have been lifted I cant finally say Yes this game is not all its cracked up to be its just the same as any other over-hyped mmo sadly, I was in the First Alpha with my clan which lasted about 3 months and this was last year roughly 05/2011 and then after all the alpha was playing about in the beta tests and its just really really...REALLY over-hyped sadly

everything is just as basic as ever just with a little more shiney graphics I wish games companys would go back to there roots with trying to invent and make new sandbox and open world styled games rather than very limited and linier styled ones :(

I personally don't expect much out of GW2 just like the other mmo's that have come out and tried to be the next wow/big mmo. The problem is in the fact that mmo's these days are just way to soloable, they have become bascally single player games with a irc chat room, till you hit cap.

What happened to mmorpg's being about the journey and not how fast you can hit cap and then waste your time raiding for gear that in most of these themeparks has no more use anymore. Dark age of camelot did it right, it had questing, solo play, alot of group play, and raiding, after you raided for your gear, you'd don said gear and go to the frontier and help your realm take castles over and such, to add to this they also have realm skill points that provides some real further advancement of your char thru pvp. I am curious as to what went wrong with mmo's. Anyway, yeah I'd not expect much out of gw2 if your smart, because like all the themeparks before it, people will be bored before the first week or 2 of release is up, it always happens, even to casuals.

Personally I am waiting for: http://www.therepopulation.com/index.php The repopulation, if they actually deliver what the site says they are, it will be probally the first decent mmorpg thats come out in the last 6+ years that might have some actual chance at lastability. It reminds me a bit of swg with how the crafting is and the fact you can make a totally non-combat char if you want to. Now... The Secret world, dispite not being a bad game persay, people are quitting in droves already because quite frankly the game just gets too boring too fast, which from what I have read about GW2 is going to be the same thing here as well. But hey, if you quit for a while no biggie you can always come back later and not have to worry about having to pay a sub fee to check out the game after some updates.

Dispite saying all this I'll probally buy GW2 myself, just because I'll never have to worry about a sub fee again, I can come and go as I please when I please, which in my eyes, is a nice touch. I bought tsw for 37.50 on a 25% off sale on a webstore, and I have to say that was a big waste of money, not as big of a waste as diablo 3 was though. IMO if a mmorpg gets boring after 5-10 hours of playing it total, the game has some major issues that need to be addressed.

This post would work so much better if...

    1.  The people looking forward to GW2 were all super sandbox fanatics who would be shocked to hear that GW2 is not the next coming of SWG.

    2.  Most of the people looking forward to the game haven't ALSO played in the beta weekends, so are like 'Oh shit, he's played the game and we haven't so he knows what he's saying'

    3.  Your post didn't clear delineate that your taste differs from that of people who are looking forward to the game, so that while this may be a great warning to people like yourself (Assuming people like yourself are too stupid to have not already figured out GW2 is not EVE 2.0, and I think you should give them more credit), it's fairly useless for people who don't share your tastes.

... but thanks!  I think there may now  be one or two tragically deluded Xsyon players who now realize that GW2 is not the same as Xsyon, with shinier graphics and less crashing. :)

How to get spotlight poster in MMORPG.COM:

Step 1:  Start a thread with an extremely open-ended question about sandbox MMOs or old school MMOs.

Step 2:  Be sure to include in your opening post things statements like "It's about the journey, not the destination".  Also be sure to complain about any recent MMOs and how the developers obviously have it wrong.  Remember your mantra, themeparks are the devil's work.

Step 3:  Reply very controversially to anyone who disagrees with you, even if they agree with you on every point except one minor detail.  Remember it's not trolling if you don't insult the poster directly.  Attack their ideas and viewpoints only!  It's okay to bash groups of people, like calling modern MMO players content locusts.  Don't worry, they do it in MMORPG.com editorials too!

Step 4:  Make sure to keep the thread active as long as possible.  Remember all you need to be a spotlight poster is to get enough replies or have the administrators predict the thread will get loads of replies.

Well I definatley wouldnt say it's a WoW clone, I will say that it has a WoW feel. I mean that in a good way.

  • evolver1972evolver1972 Member Posts: 1,118

OMG you're right!  It IS a WoW clone!  Here's why:

    It's an MMORPG

You use a computer, mouse and keyboard to play the game

    It has a fantasy setting

There are avatars that you use to represent yourself in game

You control your avatar to kill things and the things you kill drop loot

There is PvP in certain areas

    There's crafting

    You can join a guild

Did I mention it's an MMORPG?

Thank you very much for showing me how much of an idiot I have been!  I have seen the light and now regret the $60 I paid and all of the fun I've had in GW2 BWEs!

BTW, I'm also looking forward to that WoW clone known as The Repopulation.  Should be fun.  However, I hope that if I see you in game, you and I are different factions....

Always the case with an unreleased game that were excited about, thats the issue here i think.

Go back and check out the beta-prelaunch threads for games like WAR/AOC/AION/RIFT/SWTOR...no one cares how totally awesome and game-changing warhammers beta and launch were..since the midgame and endgame are now known and a dud.

    Just an example.

Ill hop in GW2 once the game is known...has way too much hype for my likings...way too much.   Since gear and levels dont matter so much i wont be too far behinds if ijump in a month later anyway.

Except that GW2 plays the same through all 80 levels and beyond instead of changing the game once you reach max level like the ones you listed.

So you don't have to know anything all about a game in order to make a meandering, useless post about it. Good to know.

    "Loading screens" are not "instances".
Your personal efforts to troll any game will not, in fact, impact the success or failure of said game.

Honestly I use to play WoW and did enjoy it. I met my Fiance there actually, so I really cant say anything bad about it.  Back when it started, WoW was exciting. Other games had quests, but WoW really made the quest hub a thing.. and back then it was exciting. They didnt do anything new but what they did do was take concepts from other games, polish them up, improve everything, and make it all work together. Say what you will about WoW, but back in the day it was exciting and fun. So yes, Guild wars 2 is also exciting and fun, so it is kinda like wow in that regard.

I could counter-troll and say that I heard of this game called The Repopulation that doesnt sound anything like that.. exciting nor fun... but I wont.
