Yes!  Because now we're a little closer to understanding each other!  We've cleared up something.

I fully respect your right to subjectively say 'GW2 is bad' all you want.

I'm afraid I don't hold the keys to reality and the human mind, so I can't support your right to say it objectively.

You like your stuff, other people like theirs, we can all be happy and stop insulting each other and enjoy the hell out of the stuff we personally enjoy!  It's a win/win situation.

I think it lives up to the hype. The no quest hubs is amazing... you don't have ot run 10 miles kill the thing then run 10 miles back and get your reward. Reward is through mail which is awesome so you just keep going and keep playing.

    SO much fun.

OP, First off no one owes you any explanation as to the where and whys of the hype. Your so called "fanboys" are too busy enjoying GW2 and talking about why they enjoy GW2. We like it. End of. You don't. Great.

Look at it like this: You're walking down a street past a comic shop. You go in to have a look and see a half open door towards the back and through it you can hear some guy yelling about lightning bolts and trolls. you get a bit closer and see some folk hunched over a table with loads of funny dice. They're wearing dodgy robes and carrying fake swords and staves. It looks sily. It looks immature. It looks cheap. It looks like they're having a blast. You shake your head and mutter to yourself: I just don't get it.

And that's fine. Just close the door and keep walking. We'll stay here, having fun.

    There is NO miracle patch.

95% of what you see in beta won't change by launch.

    Hope is not a stategy.

This really. I can't recall the last time I had this much fun in an mmo. I've practically been playing the whole time since the servers were open with a little time for sleep and dinner just now.

The game won't appeal to everyone that's for sure. But I think there are a large group of players who really enjoy it though. OP, hopefully you will find a game you really enjoy.

I will not say much more than that but I will buy the game and see what's offer later when you can get to more max level.

I really don't understand why you call it hype when the first offering (GW1) was a successful game.

Personally I played 5 minutes of this game before pre-purchases was even available and I absolutely fell head over heels in love. The game oozes style in everywhere, the art is incredibly gorgeous, the UI/menus are gorgeous (imo not enough people compliment this, its a big deal, your going to be using it all the time), the skills are fun to use, SKILL is the supreme ruler of GW2 (instead of gear), etc etc etc.

Personally, I also don't pay attention to hype even a little, I play a game, if it sucks, I likely never touch it again, as I have with seriously 100 other mmorpgs. If it's pretty fun, I have fun, that simple. Find your fun. To me, GW2 finnally sheds so many of the tired mechanics of MMORPGs and I am fully excited to some day have 1 of each class @ 80 (why? because each class plays so incredibly differently than the other) and have them all look awesome as hell with 1337 cosmetic gear. The hype for this game is seriously like 95% player generated, it's from players having tons of fun each beta. ANET has barely lifted a finger for the hype train, I like to think so because of there confidence in the quality of there game, which is extremely high.

I know that as soon as I had played in CB and later BWE #1, I began trying to sway every single one of my mmorpg friends to buy it, so far I'm 10 for 10 :P (most of them came by just playing BWE 3 yesterday).

What the hell are you talking about?  I have been playing TSW but have been very critical of that game (and I am NOT playing it right now because I have grown bored of it).  Why don't you look a little further in my post history.  [mod edit]

    1) I've so far had 3 NPC randomly run up to me saying they need help with something.  These were in different areas for different reasons.

    2) I've completed 6 different jumping puzzles and 30 something Vistas.  Something other MMO's lack  and are unique (to my knowledge).

    3) I've been transformed into a tree-like dog, used a sniffing ability, and found an otherwise invisible trail to follow to find mosquitto eggs and squish them.

    4) I've been transformed into a walking tree that gets to then bring other trees/plants back to life, and then destroy invasive roots.

    5)  I got to fight (and lose) against enemies in pitch-black high areas with tourches.

    6)  A mad scientist let lose a hord of miniturized animals that were really F.O.O.L.'s, or oozes, that I had to subdue and capture (and return within a 60sec window or they'd explode).   This was in a crafting bazaar that locked down all the stations until the event was completed.

    7) I picked up a shovel and beat a crocodile with it.   Rinse and repeat with a stick, a branch, a spiked fruit, a hoe, a bomb, and multiple other weapons that didn't belong to me originally.

    8)  My crafting so far I've found half a dozen recipes while putting stuff together rather than just getting recipes from an NPC.

    10) An invasion of zombies was coming up a coastal camp and the NPC's there had me set up planet-turret defenses that attacked and kills them in a zombie-defense tower thingy.

I can go on and on and on of the things I've done in the past day and 1/2, but I've got to go back doing more things.  This game is awesome!.

yea I love how many quests have you use other types of weapons or objects which change your skillbar to new skills many of them are a lot of fun.. not ot mention underwater combat is a blast as well

I don't see the hype either. But instead of bashing the game, I will just conclude that it's not for me and leave it at that.

Lets be objective: it was anticipated for years.
That's pretty much all a game needs for big hype. Get enough positive excitement for long enough and there you go. That's all there really is to understand about the hype.

That said I really have enjoying the BWEs and can't wait for release. Not because of hype, but because I like what I've seen and experienced. Do I expect GW2 to make profound difference in my life. No. Do I think its the mmo Messiah? Not at all. Its simply a good game with a lot to offer, and that's all I really need in an mmo.

Well, I don't buy it. ANET may be pretty transparent thus far with what they have shown but it doesn't hide that the game is a boring, shallow, uninspired effort that is being propelled by a large group of rather blind zealots.

    /rantdone

Now this guys is actually trying to explain why, why cant you fanboys do the same?

He's not entirely correct. GW2 was already over-hyped even before TOR, or any 2011-2012 MMO has come out. A more accurate explanation would be because people have been burned by existing MMOs and GW2's offerings coincidentally clicked to what they're looking for. Of course let us not take for granted blind followers. So far ANet delivered on what they've promised. I've only become aware of this game last year and right from reading up on what it has to offer I already saw myself enjoying this. I already saw how different it will be from other themeparks. Now that I'm playing it I never felt short-changed.

I hope you can make sense of that because so far, out of all who tried explaining it you only listened to this one who basically agrees with you and has the same stance against GW2.

Let me put it this way - hype has always a very irrational qualitiy. That is the reason why people use the word 'hype' at all.

But maybe you wold understand it just a little bit if you imagine to be the average WoW-player, who asks himself:

    • Why do I have always to grind better gear, why can I not just do, what I want to do?
    • Why are there waiting cues for BGs?
    • Why is there a stupid honor-system and resilence on items?
    • Why do I have to do the same stuff again and again and again?
    • Why does the game force me to play more time than I normaly want to?
    • Would PvP not be much better with 3 factions like in DAoC?
    • Why is there no big scale PvP with siege weapons, castles, etc.?
    • Why is there kill-stealing, ninja-looting, griefing?
    • Why do my actions never have an impact on the world?
    • Why are players being separated by the game and not united?
    • Why does the game always tell me, that I am not good enough with my gear?
    • Why does the game not have traps and riddles?
    • Why can I not choose the colours of my armor?
    • Why can I not take a few days of the game without getting completely behind of everything?
    • Where are the world-boss-encounters?
    • Why do I have 50 Skills, but in the end I always use the same 3 ones over and over again?
    • Why is there always only one way to play my class correctly?
    • Why do we have to wait for tanks/healer all the time?

Ok, this list could be much longer...^^

Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need.

This game is hyped from THIS site and fanboys there is no word of mouth, get real.
I think the 10 million-something beta signups might disagree with you.

I think you dont know the mening what word of mouth means hence my disscustion with another guy, your post is moot, sorry.

I bought the hype as far as :

    1) Ditching the trinity

    2) B2P

    3) Dynamic Events - to an extent.  I enjoyed leveling in SWTOR and I doubt this gimmick will be more enjoyable to me personally.

I haven't played it, but until I try it I won't buy the hype for the end-game outside of WvWvW.

I don't really think he said much about "not liking it"...just did not understand all the hype.  Honestly, I've got a few beta events of GW2 under my belt and part of me has to agree with the post...the hype is overblown.

The game is fairly stable (although this weekend's WvW pvp lagged bigtime in spots) and the whole questing system is definitely a little different;  but I don't see this game as the mmorpg saviour some have made it out to be.

Like most here have said, a good game with many strong points, but it is does fall short of "industry changing" calibre...and who knows what a game will need accomplish to achieve that label.

Its a fair game, technically its pretty sound but it does not add anything that makes me want to rush out and grab it. (Yes I played the BEWs) WvW was my big hope, as an old DAOC player I was hoping WvW would be enough to make me really want to buy the game, its not.

Fair play to those who are excited to buy and play the game and I hope they enjoy thier time in GW2's. I just wont be one of them.

By the true meaning of the word hype nothing can live up to it....

Then again on internet forums and based on anecdotal evidence nothing ever lives up to expectations.

Fact its its another solid MMO that will provide competition to the established norm... and if you think the established norm doesnt change, look at how MMOs were viewed just 2 short years ago, and look at them now.

For me the last 2 years have been an awesome time to be an MMO player, DC Universe, Swtor, Rift, TSW, Tera GW 2 coming just on the AAA MMO side they have all been significantly better than anything that came before them (I include wow in that despite it still being a good game, even if its not the game I want to play any more).

Theres more to come too, Archage, City of Steam, Neverwinter, Raiderz some really good MMOs coming that are far in advance of what went before...

Anyway my point is GW 2 wont live up to what some people want us to believe it is, but it will be a good game and a good addition to the MMO Market.  Yes the market might be getting saturated, but at some point you will just have to accept you cant play em all.

Enjoy the ones you enjoy and be happy that there are enough games out there that people wont want to change yours.... instead they can just find their own too.

    1: Bought it.

2:Played all BWEs including this weekend so far.

    3:Asked for a refund.

Before i get hounded for having an opinion, i'll just say that the game is great, its all super and duper and made of candy sticks and magic, but it isnt for me. I fell onto the hype train (as i always do) and ended up under the carriage. As an avid PvE player, i just didnt feel that there was enough content and flow to allow any form of immersion. Couple that with the voice acting and i would honestly rather have the scrolling text boxes from other games. Like i said though, this is my opinion, it will always vary from others. I hope all the people i played with enjoy the game for many years to come.

    **offTopic**

I have to say that ArenaNet are fantastic for allowing me to have a refund, so for customer service 10/10, i'll be keeping an eye on Anet purely down to my fantastic experience.

I find it funny how some people say the game isn't industry changing when it's doing the single biggest change to the industry there is, dropping the holy trinity. Not to mention, it works, and very well. If removing the single biggest mechanic that's commonplace across nearly every MMORPG in existence isn't industry changing, literally nothing can be "industry changing" to you guys... Not to mention the fact that SKILL is now the primary focus of the game, instead of gear. Please, I dare anyone, to actually point out a game where SKILL is truly more important than gear (an mmorpg..).

  • WoW_RefugeeWoW_Refugee Member Posts: 80

I tried for a long time to crystallize my feelings on Guild Wars 2, and I have come up with the following opinion.

It's a highly polished mix of RIFT rifts, Warhammer Online public questing, Dark Age of Camelot's RVR, and Star Wars the Old Republic's storyline questing. No more, no less. There’s really nothing in Guild Wars 2 which you cannot find in those 4 previous MMOs. The only difference (to some extent) is the polish.

I'm not dumping on the game here, I like it enough that I prepurchased it way back before the first BWE so I could get in, and I’ve played in all of them since. However, I have never expected it to be the best game ever released, and so I don't have blinders on to some of its weaknesses and some of the areas where it can be improved. Guild Wars 2 is going to be a very good game, but it is not going to be some revolutionary improvement of MMO gaming as a whole, and will continue to suffer from some of the same problems, pitfalls, and "boring grind" as its predecessors, despite ArenaNet’s “Manifesto”.

I don't have expectations that the game will gather 10million "subscribers". You just can't rely on the current crop of MMO gamers to stick around for very long.
