So I cannot help but notice this slope going on. Could this be the deal breaker for Guild Wars 2?

AzureProwerAzurePrower Member UncommonPosts: 1,550

At first it was all Guild Wars 2 is only buy to play! People buying copies will be able to cover the costs of a persistent server instead of instanced game play.

Then the inevitable cash shop arrived. People are defending it saying 'it's just cosmetic items' and 'helps pay the costs of running a persistent server'.

Then the whole gems debacle. 'It still doesn't effect game play all that much and costs too much to get ahead of any one.'

Now paying for 'time-saving' items. People are still clinging to 'it's not pay to win. This is okay!'

Where do people draw the line at? I mean, I was looking forward to Guild Wars 2 as the next person. How ever this same thing was present with Blizzard and World of Warcraft. Some thing I didn't like then and especially now since I saw the direction it was heading.

Where are people going to put their foot down for Guild Wars 2 or will they keep making excuses whilst they keep taking advantage of milking players for every dollar they can get?

TL;DR:

Buy to play -> Cosmetic item cash shop -> gems -> Time-saving items -> (What next?)

As long as they don't take it to the next level like they did with GW1 (ie. skill packs), then it should be fine.

I've seen worse.  TSW comes to mind.    there you have a B2P, then a Month Sub Fee, and a cash shop.

TSW's cash shop is completely cosmetic, and most sub based mmo's have some form of cash shop these days. I believe the OP is implying pay to win.

And the GW2 cash shop is purely cosmetic as well. The best part is that rushing to level 80 using exp boosters doesn't 'win' you the game or make your character any better than anyone else..

Agree it is, and believe it will remain that way.

    They will.

If their did it for their first game, what makes you think they won't do it for the sequel?

Because there is no point. It's extremely easy to get all the skills by level 80 in this game.

TBH the skill packs didn't really make any difference to that game at all.

... everybody I know knew it'd have a cash shop from the very beginning, and convenience items (ie, xp potions) were mentioned pretty much FOREVER ago.  Over a year ago.

I more or less expected everything (Except for the trading gems for gold thing, but that doesn't really bug me because it just means people who have lots of spare time can get cash shop things too), and most everybody I knew was aware of these things.

Doesn't feel like a slippery slope to me, not yet.  Oh well.

There is only one pay-2-win definition: shop-purchased items are making the player more poverful in PvP, while same level of power is unachievable to non-paying player without considerable grind.

If there is no such thing, then it's not Pay-2-Win.

That's all, thankyouverymuch for reading and, obviously, not understanding.

They do, as you can have all the skills from the moment you first log in. Which takes a lot away from the content, and gives an unfair advantage in pvp, against those going through the content normally. I however do believe like others that they won't go that far, with GW2. If they do, it will make a lot of people very unhappy.

Sigh... are you tools really going to keep posting this garbage? Time saving items are good for all of us. It allows casual players to spend their money from there jobs to progress faster while the rest of us basement dwelling neckbeards get to enjoy a fantastic game that will only get better with content updates as the time saving items / cosmetic gear pay for the updates.

And LOL @ skill packs comment... seriously bro you fail.

  • grapevinegrapevine Member UncommonPosts: 1,927
Failed at reading I guess. I said I don't believe they go that far, unlike they did for GW1.

I am not say they did.

What I said is that since they did it for GW1 I don't see why not doing it for GW2.

The guy I was replying too, was concerned about that.

Having said that, I already bought GW2, and I will play it until I get bored.

I do not intend to spend a Penny on the cash shop which I am against, so I don't mind what kind of thing they sell.

You guys have actually played GW2 right? Skill packs were a completely different ball game in GW1, getting skills could be extremely (often to the point of being too much) time consuming. Fact is though, it was still plenty doable to build your desired build. Skills are so completely different in GW2 however that a skill pack, evne if it was giving you a bunch of skill points to spend, big whoop. This isn't like most PvP, player skill, not skills (lil confusing sorry) or gear, will reign supreme.

Whilst on account management I found a secret page where they stated they are going to implement a feature where you have to pay 20 cents everytime you log in....

Lol I'm pretty sure there's nothing to worry about.  Levels barely matter, loot doesn't, so what would you buy other than cosmetics?

once they add items that increase stats by any way or add equipment that has stats then i will be worried. until then the cash shop does not bother me. i have seen so many cash shops that are so much worse then this that it ruins the game, but GW2 cash shop is just fine in my opinion.

[edit] at least they do not have enchanting in the game and have items in the cash shop that give you higher chance of enchanting.

The skill packs in GW1 were only for PvP and heroes (companions). If you wanted to unlock them in PvE you had to use skillbooks, which dropped only in hardmode. (Skillbooks for Elite skills dropped only from bosses in hardmode) In GW2 every skill is already unlocked in PvP.

GW1 skill packs cover both PvE and PvP.

Did you misread or misinterpret what he said?.

Being able to buy things from the cash shop without ever spending a dime and only playtime  its a good thing no matter how you look at it.

And thats exactly what he means.

As long as it's not Pay to Win, I'm ok with the cash shop. If you want to know what pay to win is, try RoM or Allods or something like that. You throw more money at the game, you do (a lot) more damage, you take less damage, your cooldowns are lowered whatever. You pay (a lot) and you become almost invincible, that's pay to win and that's not what the GW2 cash shop supports.

That's where I draw the line.

    Deciding to poke the bear.

Wonder if they'll ever give us sparkly ponies to buy from the cash shop.

  • StrixMaximaStrixMaxima Member UncommonPosts: 865

I think the question to all people thinking this game's cash shop is:

Would you rather, honestly, in all truth, pay 15 Dollars a month instead of having this rather innocuous Cash Shop?

I would only get worried if they sold equipment superior to what's possible to craft/find in the game, direct combat boosters (+25% damage for 1 hour), or special siege/WvW machinery.

If you get all worked up because people can swap Gems for Gold in a game so utterly independent of this currency, or spectacular EXP boosters in a game that puts you  as lv 80 for PvP from the get go... well, you need a new hobby.

I did notice that for completing a daily achievement quota I got one of the cash shop items. I got a res orb yesterday and repair canister today. Both cash shop items. So I can accquire them in game by chance.

Play for fun. Play to win. Play for perfection. Play with friends. Play in another world. Why do you play?
