Obsession with WoW Killers?

YakkinYakkin Member Posts: 919

There is always guarantee to be one of these posts, and I must ask:

Why does this unhealthy obsession with the destruction of WoW exist?

I simply cannot understand the point of it. If the game does die, it will be the result of it simply not being profitable enough to be worth keeping active, not because of another MMO.

It's true that an MMO can OVERTHROW another MMO in terms of of popularity, but MMOs don't just drop dead from being overthrown (unless they took an arrow to the knee, HEYO!).

And additionally:

Why does an MMO have to take subscribers from WoW or have millions of subscribers to be considered relevant?

I'm pretty sure that about a decade ago, having 500k subs was considered pretty good, nowadays it seems like there are stupid people who won't even look at an MMO unless it has 5 million subscribers or some stupidly large number like that.

And finally:

Why can there only be one MMO?

This one particularly boggles the mind, why can there only be one? Surely having many good MMOs ensures competition and prevents the MMO pool from being stagnant?

I JUST DON'T GET THIS OBSESSION.

I totally agree with everything you have said. I baffles me as to why someone feels they cant play a certain game because its not a "WoW Killer" or it is a "WoW Clone".

There are always going to be similar elements to any MMO so why cant people just take a given game at face vaule and play it because its entertaining.

Theres plenty of MMO players out there so surely more than 1 MMO can exist at a time or am i missing something, is it a case of too much choice hurts the MMO players brain?

The only reason I can think of is: REVENGE

For some reason, it appears that many people blame Blizzard for ruining the genre.

true although most of it is the developers/publishers for just trying to cash in by making clones instead of actually expanding the genre with new ideas and game elements... Ive always said copying a game is fine but at least improve and expand on what has come before which most games post wow have failed to do

I don't know, nothing but time is going to kill wow. The latest wow killer, gw2 has particularly obnoxious fans. I am going to buy the game, but the sadist in me wants it to fail because gw2 fanboy would be beside himself and these boards would be hysterical, the part of me that wants a good game to play hopes my evil side is denied though. :)

you say that yet even after all that has happened to swtor the extreme fanboys still enjoy the game and just say so what? honestly its a damn video game people need to lighten up.

Honestly, that's just me popping off at the mouth. I have no mmo that interest me right now and that is my favorite sort of game, so in spite of the problems I see, i am both purchasing and looking forward to gw2.  Its just the small part of me that enjoys schaddenfreud that wishes it to fail.

I agree. Yet, on these forums especially, you will see people say things like:

    1. The developers should be fired!

    2. The company should be burned to the ground!!

    3. The deveopers should be executed!!! (seriously, someone said this)

You guys are familiar with the concept of hyperbole aren't you? I am certain no one really wants game developers executed for bad games. Although if we go in that direction I'd like to see it expanded to music, I'd swing the axe myself for Bieber and cold play.

They really did have such a slam dunk. I mean the fail had to be pretty epic to make such a bad game with all that lore and such a huge fanbase.  I believe the biggest problem was content and how empty it feels it was like a really shallow single player game with a bunch of other players running around.

Well, to be fair, they DID spend roughly $150 million + dollars on the MMO, it took them roughly 4 - 5 years to get it out, and the game was hyped to high hell. And I've heard (heard, not really sure if true) that the developers of SWTOR have a reputation for arrogance and dismissive behavior regarding criticism.

I think people like to see big things fail, the bigger WoW got the more people want to see something kill it. It's really quite silly. WoW didn't ruin anything, they made a game, people played it. no one is forced to play, no one is strong armed to pay their sub fee. The way people talk on the forums sometimes you think WoW sneaks into peoples rooms at night, makes them sign up for the game and forces them to pay subs.

Of course, there might be the more ominous thought that some people who complain have a hopeless case of being addicted to anything they find enjoyable and got stuck to WoW; and when WoW started to morph into something they didn't like, they want it to die so they don't have to exert the willpower to break out of their own addictive personality.

But meh, just a conspiracy theory, nothing else.

Amazing thing is they most likely recovered the $150 million budget.   Sold 2 mil copies, pop gradually decreased over 6 month.

Seriously, think about it.  They actually recovered those money.

    Really simple:

Why do vehicle manufactorer's enter races and splatter their logos?

Why did Kawasaki's new ZX-R14 get slammed on every motorcycle website after it beat the Suzuki Hayabusa?

Answer to both questions are simple: the vehicles that turn the most heads gets sold the most and for us that means numbers (mind you, I race, I'd never ride either the R14 or Hayabusa on track because I am not into drag strips).

I live to go faster...or die trying.

I JUST DON'T GET THIS OBSESSION.

its an obsession to put down the perceived "top dog"

-- and it happens in everything, not just mmos

for mmos, same obsession was to put down EQ for 5 years

Nearly every major game in the last five years has tried to take a chunk out of WoW's playerbase, because it would mean instant financial success.

So far, none have achieved it to any significant degree.  But that doesn't stop them from trying.  Or stop the fans from touting that it is going to happen.

I'm not sure why they keep trying this tho tbh.

That'd be like trying to decrown Microsoft.

I don't get this argument if MMO A has 5 million subs and when MMO B comes out MMO A quickly looses 95% of said player base and shuts down soon after, how does MMO B have seemingly no effect on MMO A?

Ofcourse it shuts down because it's not profitable enough but there has to be a reason why! A game isn't profitable and dies of for no reason, either people get bored with the game for whatever reason or drop it for something else they think is better, if a significant portion does the latter to a specific game and the former game consolidates a lot of servers soon after and then some time later shuts down. I'd say it would be perfectly reasonable to say MMO B killed MMO A.

    Wrong question:

By extension, the unhealthy obsession with the destruction of {any game I am not enjoying}?

    Peer Pressure.

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
