Waiting for reviews 6 months after release to decide because I'm not much interested anyway. If they are good I may buy it as a side game to play now and then if I want something different.
Edit: But I don't avoid a game just because of hype. I still bought and played SWTOR although I absolutely loathed it's rabid fanbois.
One more useless threat cant Use " HYPE " game had last almost OPEN beta - as you could get key easily---
Hype-- A clever marketing strategy which a product is advertized as the thing everyone must have, to the point where people begin to feel they need to consume it.u
PPL stop using Hype plz its Expectations you talking about.
Developers delivered ALL they promised and even better showen it in game.
Also its for sure bad idea to rely on some other people to decide for you play or not to play any Game.
To me this game has a totally different feel and the game design not being the biggest deal in why I say wait. I don't feel like Anet is the same Anet I recall with GW1. Probably has something to do with NC Soft. To me there are plenty of signs that say wait for those that like to be more certain on their purchases.
They are still making sizable changes to game play, performance, limits. Not quite the status the game was supposed to be released under. It will not have had any (as in zero) time really testing final balance numbers, limit numbers or performance feedback.
IMO the game should be very soon be going into a beta state lasting for 2-3 weeks prior to release, so they can get constant feedback on their next round of changes. I forsee that not happening and then the game going into that mode at the time of release.
Have you even played the game for more than 10 minutes? It doesn't sound like it to me.
If you played the beta, you would know that this past weekend the two new races starting areas were touched by players outside the QA/closed testers for the first time ever. It alone was more polished than 95% of MMO's I have ever played. And it has zero beta testing.
They know what they are doing and their QA is obviously better than pretty much any company out there. I am sure there will some issues here and there, but they are few and far between. Balance issues can and will be addressed quickly, especially with how much better their server technology is than any MMO ever released except GW1. The only other game with server tech this good is Firefall. The ability to release patches and test things without bringing the live servers down at all, and then just tell people "new patch is ready, restart your clients" will allow them to update and make TONS of iterative changes without bothering anyone.
And many times, these patches are not even "required". So you can keep playing, and next time you logout and back in, you will get the new patch. The only time you really need to make it required is to fix exploits or game breaking issues. Plus, the fact that the game is more polished than any game probably ever released in the history of MMO's is even more impressive. I had 1 or 2 issues in the game, which were very minor and could have been due to lag/server issues right at the start of the event.
Matt touches on the ArenaNet QA team here and I just want to highlight how good a job I think they have done.
It is insanely difficult to QA dynamic events compared to normal quests. I believe it's also insanely difficult to QA WvW and sPvP when all the classes have such a 'limited' amount of skills compared to more diverse systems. All that interaction between classes both fighting with and against each other needs to be balanced and I think in GW2 more so than with previous MMO releases ArenaNet have had both a much harder job at hand and it looks like they have also even managed to do it better.
If you look at the interactions of GW2's features and players you can see there is a very thin line to walk. I don't think I need to explain why Dynamic Events would be difficult to test thoroughly, especially compared to 'standard quests' (even if they did do contain VO work, like SW:TOR). Or some people might think that it's easier to test because there are fewer player skills involved, it isn't. Fewer skills makes it harder to balance in a lot of ways due to each skill needing to be usefull for a start, in games like GW1 a lot of skills and combinations just weren't any good. They also don't get away with having skills specifically designed for PvP like you see in other games. They also took the step of not changing how a skill works in PvP compared to the PvE portion of the game.
Furthermore, with large skill choices the playerbase can somewhat act as a good balance in itself. Someone can make 'Build A' that stomps a few arena matches with it because it's good against the current FoTM stuff. All that happens is that someone will make Build B to stop it. Build B might be terrible against the setup that Build A was designed for but just due to the fact that Build B even exists less people will now think about using Build A. The point is.. when playing with less skills it's a lot harder to rely on the playerbase to be the balancing factor since there are less niche builds in general.
QA isn't something a lot of people think about but as we were all playing a beta it really should have been something we thought about. Beta and Alpha testers are essentially there to try achieve the same outcome as the internal QA team. We might not be as good at it but there are many times more beta testers than there are QA guys. The reason they hold the beta events is to stress their systems with load that they may not be able to replicate internally and at the same time they get the opportunity to have a large quantity of players play through content. In such large numbers more bugs are bound to be uncovered that the relatively tiny amount of employed QA testers may have missed and it gives the company a chance to here much more player feedback than they can get from the QA teams.
One of the QA guys put up a blog a while back. While he doesn't go deep into details you can imagine the sheer amount of testing that must have been done to get the game so polished, and when you think about how difficult it might have been for certain kinds of content, it puts it a bit more into perspective. http://www.arena.net/blog/assuring-quality-qa-at-arenanet
after their video with their "MAnifesto", they just hooked my eye, and as i see their manifesto becomes true i am overhyped, i dont expect someone else to show me the way to get hyped :P
You could let everyone make your decisions for you, eventually you will die because someone will forget to tell you when to feed yourself.
FOR F" SAKE use your brain..
p.s. I love the "waiting for review" statements, because that persons opinion is stronger than yours.. do we really wonder why our civilization is declining? lol
I have a dream that games will one day exist in a world where they will not be judged by the hype on the internet, but by the content of their character.
Hipsters man, the only reason people are "against" games cause of the hype... eff em all
I had no plans to bother with gw2 till i got into the last weekend beta and gave it a shot, its not a bad game, not the best mmo I have played, but in all honestly its better than most of the garbage that came out in the last 6 years or so. Also before you say it I am not a Anet or Guild wars fan, I hated Guild Wars 1, thought it was crap so gave up on it fast. I just hope it doesn't pull a age of conan, where the first zone you start in was amazing then you go out of (in aoc's case Tortage) and then you go "Wtf happened to that awesome game I was playing?" because the game after the newbie zone sucked balls. I didn't get far in the beta i was just seeing if I liked it at all. Turns out I do and I plan to pre-order it. Never, ever believe the hype surrounding a mmo, mainly because fanboys tend to be stupidly rabid about hyping it. GW2 from what little bit I seen of it actually deserves some of the hype it has, which is more than i can say for every other mmo since wow.
Swtor and Tsw I knew were going to go stale fast, TSW will be a ghost town like swtor is give it 2 months or so, you can do all the content in tsw in like 3-4 days without playing hardcore. Then the game has nothing else to offer because its a story based game. Swtor I knew was going to fall hard on its face when I played the open beta, I actually fell asleep in combat because the game was so generic and boring. Story based mmo's also have virtually 0 replayability as well. Gw2 has some, because each race has a slightyl diff story up to lv 30, then at 30 you choose 1 of 3 orders to join and then that sends your story on 1 of 3 diffrent paths. Can prob get about 3 playthrus of gw2 to see all the main story. Which is fine imo considering how much better gw2 is compared to tsw and swtor.
All I can say really is give the game a shot, it doesn't have a sub fee, so if you dislike it at first you can go back to it later.
Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:
A. Proven right (if something bad happens)
or
B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)
I'm avoiding it becuase it brings nothing new to the genre. It is as shallow as a rain puddle and as exciting as getting root canal. I seen all I needed of this game on Twitch TV and it amazes me people are so hyped about a game that is really not all that good - it's just new.
If MMO's keep going the direction they are going, soon, all we'll have is MOBA's. This game reminds me of a MOBA, just on a larger scale.
I fell ya i avoided SWOR, Minecraft, Secret World, Rift, Tera, Skyrim because of the hype it annoyed me xD but Guild Wars 2 i tried it just because my boyfriend tried Guild Wars 1 a year ago and the music, landscapes/scenery, the way the game was made impressed me even that is like a 10 year old game. The balance that had and that you only pay one time catched my eye.
Also my very first MMo was FLYFF yeah a kid game i know... but i havent found enjoyment in any game like i did in that one, i played since v3.0 and the company who designed the game was NCSoft. Didnt like Aion that much because of the games inbalance (Spirit master pwning everyone) and the constant war vs Elyos and Asmodian... and the hard hard grinding and long long road to get pvp geared. Characters is the best ive seen so far. And! the NCSOFT customer support is the best ive seen ever! thats why i wanna play Guild Wars 2.
But yeah about the HYPE on GW2 turns me off because i expect sooooo much like sooo much! and when im playing i just get dissapointed just because the hype is so high. But game is very good and very nice what turn in down is the fans over rating things when is not needed because the game itself have its own value and reputation.
Aion characters customization and looks still the best ive seen so far even better than GW2. Cant wait for GW2 to release so i can play ^_^

The interesting thing is he's been accused of both being paid off of by Anet (by the haters), and of rabidly hating on the game (by the fanboys). More importantly, though, he does a really good job of explaining why the game is good, what it does differently, why that's important, and what he's still concerned about.
It really is a better thought-out, more critical response than 90% of the content you are going to find on this site. It also has enough in there to explain why some people might not like it. He also did a 4-part livestream of the game on twitch.tv for those that want to see a longer play session (it is rather long, though).
One thing I've noticed (on this site), is that there are a lot of people who aren't judging GW2 as a game, or as an MMO, they are expecting it to be something completely different than what was promised, and then criticising it for that. The game is still an MMO, it's still in the fantasy genre, and it's still an RPG. Expect quests, expect heroes, expect beautiful color palletes, and expect a game. It's not going to be a replacement to your life, it's not going to be a zombie survival horror, it's not going to be a virtual world simulator. It's just a fun fantasy RPG that allows you to get lost in an online world w/ friends and strangers alike, in a social encouraging environment.
I think when the hype comes from people who have played the game for themselves and word of mouth of how good or bad the game is, that is the hype I look for when I'm not sure about buying a game.
Hype and cgi trailers from game companies doesn't interest me. Word of mouth about GW2 will be what shoots this game into the millions of players. It's a rock solid game. It wasn't half a$$ed done like other games that have came out in the past few years and tried to clone WoW. I'm no fangurl of Arenanet, there are things I don't like about GW2, but you have to give credit where credit is due, it's a good game.
Never avoid something just because of hype. Sometimes the hype is right like with WoW. I remember the hype going into that game and it definitely lived up to it for years.
Im avoiding GW2 because in the last 15 years of MMO Gaming I've been there, done that, played that class already. Im looking for something new. Planetside 2 and/or The War Z when it comes out.
