I went with rifle and tried it with chaos and blades. Sticked to blades as this combo gave a good survival build (dps from blades and some nice healing + dps from rifle skills).
Pistol/Elemental they have synergies around criticals and hinders. I really liked the pistol animations. The stylized smoke you leave behind when you shoot was too nice. I chose Elemental because it has a bit longer range and good DPS.
Sword and AR (Assault Rifle): Sword bcs i would have liked to wield a 2h great sword (which does not exist ingame afaik) and it does good pbaoe damage which is very helpfull against the hordes of zombies in the starter area. AR bcs it looks cool, has range, skills for healing/leeching of hp, and does good single target damage the same time. I have switched to AR only atm. bcs i have more of the helpfull passives fitting my skills that way.

Shotgun/Pistol but didn't leike them so I'm hanging round Kingsmouth Grinding AP/SP until I get a combination I like, currently using Blade/AR but I want to try Ele instrad of AR to see if it works for me better.
I chose Blades and Chaos at the start for survivability. Since then, I've tried a lot of other combinations, and I'm sure I'll try a lot more. As I learn more about the system, I'm getting a better understanding of the effectiveness that's possible with the various combinations.
Chaos/Fist as I really liked the look of the Executioner. Unfortunately it was my first character and I was clueless to the system, so after struggling through on only Fists not knowing how to get to Chaos I gave it up.
I might go back to it in the future now I know what I'm doing, I do like the Templar outfits.
I went with Pistols/ Elementalist. In a little while i'll complete the deck and i will go for Assult Rifle/ Elementalist. Later Shotgun/ Pistols. Some really cool outfits for those three.
I'm having fun treating this game as if the same thing could happen in real life, which is the way I'm trying to play my character. I figured in real life people wouldn't use/have magical abilities etc, so I went with two guns instead. I'm guessing guns are the first thing people would use against this type of threat in real life so there ya go.
Obviously this is just for personal reasons though, as I like playing my character as if it's myself been thrown into that type of situation hehe.

I use AR and pistols too, but mostly because I want to keep the distance, plus right now I use mostly rifles skills and only have one for pistols to finish of the resource.
but if it was real life I would go for almost anything I have on hand , be it hammer, blades, fists, pistols or rifles
When questing range isn't an issue. Mobs charge you anyway for the most part. It offers mitigation, damage increase weakness, self healing (best in game I feel from fist), great synergy together so you end up with good to great dps and are tough as nails. The so called wall when you hit Blue Mountain is nothing with this combo.
Later you can branch off to pair chaos with pure tanking choices or take another weapon to pair with fist for pure healing. Also I find the fist mechanic where your finishers can proc either a pbaoe damage or heal upon your next finisher use is one the best scaling mechanics in game along with the bonus to self-healing. I didn't think much of it at first but with proper passives you end up pumping out decent bonus aoe dps or healing (some other weapon bonuses I find nearly useles while others somewhat decent at best).
Your starting combo is just that though, something to start. You shouldn't define your character as such unless for whatever reason you keep going back to it more than others later in game.
Comments
Blood/blade, admittedly mostly due to the coolness factor.
Blood and Fist, masochist I guess.
I see a ton of potential in the DoT Thaurmatuge and the costume is great. Looking back this is extremely hard to solo at low levels.
But hey, FC has came through with AMAZING customer service, and I am having fun.

Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.

AR/Blood very happy with that combo.

Swords and Hammers. Been working on a good tanking build and I like to be in close.
I stated with chaos/fist.

You stay sassy!
I started chaos/blades. Then moved over to choas/hammer. And finalized into chaos/AR. However I use passives from all over the place.
