This won't be an accurate number, but will roughly be in the ball park.

Not to sure about those numbers.. I will agree that most total server account is about 3X the max concurrent capacity.. but from my experience those numbers are 2500 concurrent / 7500 account capacity.. Some will say that it has increased to 3k / 10k tops.. I have yet to read any reliable intel that shows me it's up to the numbers you have put out..

They do have a free to play component but by and large they likely have a higher number of subscription paying players than LOTRO (which has a slightly larger population) due to the way it is handled as a trial. In my view, that makes RIFT a healthy game at face value. (ie not every game needs WOW like numbers to make it.)

It had roughly 245k subscribers at the start of 2012 and the numbers were in strong decline. When extrapolating that chart Rift would have lost all its subscribers by now, which is not correct of course, but it is safe to say subscribtion numbers are much lower now than they were 8 months ago. Number of servers and server load would make me estimate less than 25k, but maybe Rift has alot of subscribers not actually playing.

It takes one to know one.

I have much respect for RIFT, and even more for the dev team, but RIFT is #83 on Xfire all games.

I didn't expect to see it this low.

Still not sure why people think xfire is a reliable source of information. Out of the 50 or so family/friends that I game with constantly none of us see the point in using that crap.

"Low" is subjective. It might be low compared to other games, but I feel like its just the right amount. Servers aren't overpopulated, yet theres still enough people online to do the various events that occur throughout the day, or to build a group to run some higher tier rifts or dungeons. Questing zones aren't overfarmed, so you're never waiting around for that one special NPC to respawn, only to have some muppet gank it from you. I find the overall population to be very healthy right now, even if its depicted at number 748 on some obscure ranking system that only some people use.

Looking at the xfire-numbers the game looks to have stabilized with it's current population, which is often important for an MMO to be enjoyable.

Saying that xfire numbers are worthless is a bit funny. I estimated SWTOR to have between 600k and 1m subscribers at the end of June, and in the quarterly report they stated well over 500k and below 1m. Looks to me like you can do some fairly accurate predictions in certain circumstances. It's important to note that the xfire population is in decline that you have to take assorted other factors into account.

Rift servers capped at 2400 after they did a bump last year sometime.  Its possible they bumped them again (to tough to get a count now that its so top heavy) but its unlikely because the game world isnt big enough to support that many level 50s.

I think 2500 is the norm, pretty sure thats what WoW is (no more than 3k for sure).

Thats part of the reason why a game like EQ2 feels deader than it actually is.  The population is scattered in hundreds of different places.  Not that EQ2 is booming, but compare NA servers http://www.soe.com/status/ with http://www.riftgame.com/en/shardstatus/

Note that while Rift has 16 NA servers, only about 10 of those are truly active.  There are quite a few shards with less than 50 people online.

Rift only has 178 xfire users though.  SWTOR has 1,416.  The larger the number of players the more likely they represent the general population.
