Poorly executed sequels and sub standard DLC are a hallmark of the new buisness model that EA is a champion of. Keep the costs down and just sell using the titles name, after a couple of sequels the gold pot is exhausted. Meanwhile make sure you have a new title up and coming that you can milk for another couple of years. The only exceptions to this are certain cult games like Sims, where you can release tosh year after year and fans of that unique style will just keep buying.

    Mythic?

O, you must mean Bioware Mythic ,since that's the only company mentioned on the DAOC homepage (or any page in there for that matter)

The above is my personal opinion. Anyone displaying a view contrary to my opinion is obviously WRONG and should STHU. (neener neener)

Why would we blame the companies that made the games we love? We blame EA for changing the games and companies because it is directly their fault. I'm sure most of the companies that initially signed with EA didn't realize that EA would strangle them.

Yeah I'm sure people that were clever enough to build up a successful company worth millions are that naive, though people do strange things when millions of dollars are waved in their face.

A lot of the enthusiast entrepreneurs from the early days of MMO’s and gaming in general did sell out. But the real problem is that there was no one to replace them. With development costs getting higher and higher, it is nearly impossible for new blood to come in and make a name for itself. Indie gaming shows the huge gap that has developed in graphics between gaming studio games and independently produced games. Not always in audio or gameplay mind you, but always a huge gap in graphics quality.

Think about all those studios we have and we have lost to bigger companies and the Indie developers that have been absorbed by the big studios as well. Now look at one year of releases on the PC, do you think that the titles reflect all that talent? The gaming industry has become focused on giving players their fix for the year. This is now an industry driven by matching the market.

The gaming design model used to be about making the best, most innovative and kick arse games. Games that you would want to buy even if you had not played something with exactly the same controls, classes, races, and game play as you had played before. Now it is about making this year’s shooter or this year’s MMO, following the game play template and adding lots of cutscenes. Oh, and the hype. That used to be to get interest in the launch, now it is designed to get you to pre-order.

But hey, keep pre-ordering, because if you did not that business model would have serious problems as players would actually read reviews before they bought a game.

I am not sure if they care.

If you were a Bioware exec, or Richard Garriot, you probably would have made millions on the EA buy out deal. Since you can always do something else that you like (like becoming a paid astronaut), why wouldn't you take the millions and run?
