Star Wars Galaxies... Well its been an exceedingly long time since I lay down my rifle, removed my composite and ventured off into the unknown in search of a new adventure. Since my departure from the game I've played many other Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplay Games (what a mouthful), but none have kept me as involved as SWG did. When I look back and remember my time with SWG I have so many great memories, which is something I cant say about the other games I've played or beta tested.

As you may have already guessed, from the fact that im posting here, I am considering returning. However the reasons that are drawing me back are very different compared to those that kept me playing before. My 'play style' has changed dramatically, when I left I was a headstrong PvP'er only interested in accumulating mass amounts of credits to fund my expensive passion. Now I return seeking immersion, Roleplay and a good group of friends, yes of course amassing credits still does interest me but only to finance my new desire to collect.

So, if anyone would be so kind to answer some questions for me that would really be great. One thing I would like to ask is that can people that are playing or have recently played answer these questions, because if I understand correctly the game has come a long way in a very short amount of time.

Is it wise to consider coming back to Star Wars Galaxies, has really that much changed? I understand that the Combat Upgrade and new expansion is scheduled for May, but I don’t really want to wait until then because as of now im without a MMORPG and I have the patience to start playing and wait until these things arrive.

How is the Roleplay, are there a lot of active Roleplayers about still? Which servers do the majority of Roleplayers reside on? Is there a Europe server where a lot of Roleplayers are? (wishful thinking I know).

Jedi... well I couldn’t make this post without enquiring about Jedi now, could I? So, I have read much about the new path to becoming a Jedi and my main question is; how long will it take to unlock my Jedi Force Sensitive Slot? Im not in a hurry to do so, however I would like a rough timeframe. Also are there many Jedi Roleplayers out there, or maybe guilds (correct SWG term?) that consist of Jedi Roleplayers?

When I left the game the main source of gathering credits for me was through solo mission teams, im hoping this has changed in some way by now and these are not possible anymore. Is there a much more enjoyable way to make credits? Is it too late in the day to aim to be a successful crafter? I remember there being a few top crafters on Bloodfin when I left and not many of the others received much business.

Simply put, is Jump to Light Speed any good? What would attract me to piloting a ship up into space would be being able to stop it anywhere and just walk around in the ship looking at the views etc, is this possible?

The Galactic Civil War, it sounds very interesting in theory but did they pull it off successfully? If they did, what parts of it are you enjoying the most? I remember when the Imperial Crackdown came out and it was a huge let down.

If you had to give Star Wars Galaxies a rating out of 10, what would it be? Once again please only answer if you are playing, or have recently played the game.

Final question - Can anyone put me in contact with any Roleplay guilds or direct me to a place where I can search for some, preferably rebel.

Well that’s it for now, im sure I’ll think of more though.

Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time out to answer all these questions.

Yes, quite a bit has changed in SWG. Though not much has changed in terms of combat, they've made a lot of small tweaks that have really made the difference. Houses hold more and take less lots; shuttle times have been reduced; inventory space has been increased; there's more troops of both sides in their controlled cities - Theed has a ton of stormies all over now, for example. In the GCW, you are now fighting for control of planets. The TEF system is gone, and you can now be a PvE only Reb or Imp.

The roleplayers are really the ones that haven't left. On my galaxy (Kettemoor) there are tons of roleplayers all over. I'm sure this is the case in most galaxies as well.

You don't open a force-sensitive slot anymore for Jedi -your main character becomes force sensitive. This is accomplished primarily by getting a ton of badges. Then some old man visits you and sends you to a village on Dath where you complete quests to unlock force sensitive skills. When you've trained in 16 of these skills, your main character can now begin Jedi training. You get XP for these skills by converting your normal XP into force sensitive XP - for example, 30 rifles XP = 1 Force Sensitive Combat XP. So, becoming force sensitive is much quicker and easier, but becoming an actual Jedi takes longer than before. It's estimated that you'll need enough XP to master Rifleman 26 times to generate enough FS XP.

Solo missions are gone now. I didn't really do them before, so perhaps someone else can explain what the replacement is.

I never bought JTL, so I can't comment on this.

    The GCW is definitely better.

I'd give it about an 8.0 out of 10, but I'm a harsh grader. The only game I'd put ahead of it of the games I've played recently is WoW, though that will change if SWG keeps up their record of great fixes and updates.

I am waiting for the CU, but I'm not waiting for it to enjoy this game the way I always thought I should be able to. For me, I'm more playing and getting my character all in order FOR the CU.How is the Roleplay, are there a lot of active Roleplayers about still? Which servers do the majority of Roleplayers reside on? Is there a Europe server where a lot of Roleplayers are? (wishful thinking I know).I find the RPing to be a bit better since my last go around. A large percentage of the player base I would consider "discontents" are gone for the newer games, so even the people who dont RP seem to be more open to playing along when I interact with them. As for the Euro servers, I can't say from personal experience, but word is Chimaera-European has the best RPing community among the Euro servers.Jedi... well I couldn’t make this post without enquiring about Jedi now, could I? Im not in a hurry to do so, however I would like a rough timeframe. Also are there many Jedi Roleplayers out there, or maybe guilds (correct SWG term?) that consist of Jedi Roleplayers?Nowadays, your main character is actually the slot that becomes the Jedi, and the unlocked character is blank, and you are free to do what you want with it (even get a 2nd Jedi). With the new system, it will take you no less than 18 weeks to be eligible for Jedi Padawan. You will have to do a series of missions to unlock and master 6 FS trees of your choosing before you may enter the Padawan Trials. The missions are on a timer, and it will take you at least 18 weeks. Read up on the Force Sensitive forum's FAQ at SWG's site for all the info. When I left the game the main source of gathering credits for me was through solo mission teams, im hoping this has changed in some way by now and these are not possible anymore. Is there a much more enjoyable way to make credits? Is it too late in the day to aim to be a successful crafter? I remember there being a few top crafters on Bloodfin when I left and not many of the others received much business.Solo missions have NOT been done away with yet, but the rumblings are that the CU is gonna poop on this. For me, the best way to make that money, is to jump into my spaceship, in which i can rack up a few hundred thousand in an hour or so. It is, of course, easier to be a crafter from the beginning, having been around for all the resources, but by no means is it impossible to become one now. It may take a few months to get enough of your own good resources to mass produce, but would be well worth it in the long wrong as far as your in-game wallet is concerned.Simply put, is Jump to Light Speed any good? What would attract me to piloting a ship up into space would be being able to stop it anywhere and just walk around in the ship looking at the views etc, is this possible? This is possible in the master level ships, that allow you to bring your party aboard and hang out if you like. For me, i enjoy JTL mostly for a different type of combat (its twitch based), and the MONEY you can make in space! The Galactic Civil War, it sounds very interesting in theory but did they pull it off successfully? If they did, what parts of it are you enjoying the most? I remember when the Imperial Crackdown came out and it was a huge let down.If you are either a Rebel or Imperial, you will definitely notice the difference. Each faction has 3 towns in the galaxy that are always theirs. All the other cities' NPC population is based on who is winning the GCW on that planet (based on PvP and PvE bases placed). Right now, on my server, Rebels hold Corellia, and I can't go to Coronet to get buffed without getting shot at. You'll notice a big change. They scraped the battlefield ideas a long time ago, and it seems they brought them back in this form.If you had to give Star Wars Galaxies a rating out of 10, what would it be? Once again please only answer if you are playing, or have recently played the game. That's a hard thing to do. In comparison to other MMOs I've played recently, I'd give a 7.5-8 to SWG (highest out of the ones I've played, since I've been back). Yes I am currently playing.Final question - Can anyone put me in contact with any Roleplay guilds or direct me to a place where I can search for some, preferably rebel. First you've got to choose the server you're gonna play on. Check the server boards on SWG's main site, each galaxy has a sticky at the top of its forum to keep current guilds listed. Refer to those posts for better help than anyone here can give you.Well that’s it for now, im sure I’ll think of more though.
Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time out to answer all these questions.

I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.

Elaborating one what others have said before:

Roleplaying on Euro-Servers : Europe-Chimaera is often said to be one of the RP-heaviest of all servers. You can find the RP player cities/communities listed on the SOE homepage , official SWG page, forum, subsection "Roleplaying", Sticky post : Roleplaying communities per server.

Prime money maker for those who want cash quickly = Killing easy targets in space and selling the loot to NPC. As usual selling resources is always a money maker if you go for the high end stuff (check swgcraft.com for regular resource updates). For heavy combat oriented people .. killing high end mobs (aka Nightsister elders, Tusken Berserkers, Krayt, Acklay etc.) for loot is still popular.

Crafter ... lots of the old crafters have moved on to more combat related professions with the GCW changes and/or are playing WoW parttime. There is definitely room for new crafters. Depending on the crafting profession you either can sell stuff from day 1 (e.g. novice architect --> small houses) or have to master the profession and spend a few months gathering high end resources (e.g. weaponsmith, armorsmiths .. always a highly competitive field).

Jedi unlock .. minimum time 18 weeks ( 6 phases a 3 weeks). Or as long as you want .. dont grind, have fun. For many the free second character is more interesting than being a Jedi (so many are potentially Padawans but dont grind up because its too mind numbing boring and you essentially cut yourself off from the community for the next half year as you should not be seen or the BHs will come after you).

Galactic Civil War ... very well done. Some PvP people moan that they cannot save faction NPCs from being slaughtered by a enemy faction PvE player, but fact is that you now see MANY MANY more players being involved in the GCW. And it FEELS like a war nowadays.

Lets not forget all the new cool event perks which make it possible (amongst other things)  to build a temporary warzone that is the PERFECT setting for an event.

And yes, with the yacht you have the perfect party ship (invulnerable, but also without weapons itself) just to fly around in space and do sightseeing, which is AWESOME. Check out some of the screenshots on the SWG website.

    Have fun

    Erillion

  • the above posts are great, although I would not wait for the combat upgrade. There has been a lot of new things to help RP'ers with the new event perks and as some have said there are a number of RP Guids on Europe-Chimaera (I play this sever). The great thing with coming back now is the constant flow of new things we have a big patch almost every 2 weeks. And just look at the SWG fourms to see about things like smuggler upgrades and new Mounts etc.  But as I say I think you'll get a lot by join back now and enjoying the changes aready live.
