    Are you referring to Lords of the Realm series?  I used to play them.  My friend recently tried to get me into the Total War games (Shogun 2 being the latest) and what he described sounded exactly like my experiences with Lords of the Realm.  You get a map mode which is turn-based, then battles can be fought in RTS mode or automatically resolved by the computer.

    i would suggest Age of wonders2 .Its more similar to heroes of might and magic series but better. It also plays in simultaneus mode for multiplayer purpose or single player (thnk god) so every player wont have to wait other players to finish their turns so he can play. Me and couple of friends have a burn of our life last 2 years with it.Here is a more detailed description of AOW2 so u can get the meanign better.
