The rest of the world would never even bother to touch a game in their lives. Also, to the posters who would like to classify any group of people as being one thing or another, you are only making yourself look ignorant. Honestly, why is it so hard for everyone to understand that the world is made up of many different types of people and everyone has their own likes and dislikes.
Because it seems everyone (Americans, European's, Asians, Whateverians) wants to point fingers. United Stated of America has the largest diversity of people. So to call America stupid, is in turn calling most every nationality, religion, and any other "definition" of people, stupid.
We that live in the United States of America may not all be "l33t" hardcore gamers, but it does not mean all of us like simpleton games. When any one person makes a claim that the United States of America is this or that, I simply shrug and ask myself, "what makes you any better?". We are all creatures of habit. Just so happens everyone has different habits. Some troll online forums, some play MMORPGs in small amounts of time and don't want huge timesinks.

Really pisses me off when people constantly bash Americans .
Here's one Brit who loves you guys!
As for the OP, the link just read like European snobbery. Anti amercanism is rife in Europe. I don't know why...
As a yank, the feeling is mutual... Thanks for the games, they were, simply impressive. I think London made several American cities jealous. XD
'Sandbox MMO' is a PTSD trigger word for anyone who has the experience to know that anonymous players invariably use a 'sandbox' in the same manner a housecat does.
When your head is stuck in the sand, your ass becomes the only recognizable part of you.
No game is more fun than the one you can't play, and no game is more boring than one which you've become familiar.
How to become a millionaire: Start with a billion dollars and make an MMO.
I am not sure about not being able to handle failure but hey I am busy I don't have time to struggle with the same level over and over anymore. Maybe I could do that when I was a kid but no, I am not going to waste my time.
I think it comes down to the mass of games we have available for incredibly cheap. Why am I wasting my time trying to pass difficult games when I could just start with a whole new game and enjoy something new and interesting for little or no additional costs?
That is why the only games I have beat or played long term lately have been either social games or incredibly interesting strategy games that get me excited about my improvement.
Really more of an indictment of the American educational system and the younger generation than anything. And IMHO, as a whole, more of a "Damn Kids!!" rant, rather than any real rational thought.
I feel The Escapist did a far better summation of his ideas than Massively, since they didn't try to whittle it down into something that would fit on a post-it note. F*cking Twitter generation.
Notice his bullit list of how to market games for gamers? Nice how he recommends they use these aformentioned failures as selling points. I wonder if this fuktard understands the concept of cause and effect. Are modern games watered down, ez-mode, pieces of shyte due to the game player or the game creator?

This has to be the single most stupid and bigoted response I've seen in these forums.
Poeple are people no matter where they are from, some a are clever, A LOT are stupid, some are brave some are cowardly, some wan't it easy and some wan't hard. This has nothing to do with where you live or where you are from.

Just lol that was good.
Aside from all that i have to say i like how everyone thinks they are elite and everyone else is stupid so it begs the question then where are the stupid people?
*Raises hand*
I'm not even American so can't use that as an excuse.
Most americans are carebears, so it's their fault, all they want is to rush to level cap in 3 days and go to scripted instances in order to farm your gear to make this same instance easier next time. It's their fault that MMOs have become single player games in easy mode.

Indeed.
Ignorance begets ignorance; where one side thought (perhaps rightly so at a time) the other ignorant, they have succumbed to that own folly and are taught from youth to believe stereotypes and not realize that humans will be humans no matter where they are from.
As for the psychology of the U.S. education system, it may spark an intolerance for failure due to such programs as "No child left behind" whereby they have to be taught and pass tests to move on (and may be held back), it may also bring a about a perfectionist breed who complain about things being too easy or one who would spend months perfecting games such as Dark Souls. While I attended school abroad my sister was in this, and it made her become a 4.0 perfectionist who would become incredibly disappointed if she missed even one question on an exam while in college and on her pursuit to a master's degree (throughout high school and college).
Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing). German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century. Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now). I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things). In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while. If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.
Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this. If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own. Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis. Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.
A good single player JRPG > any fail themepark pve, at least a good JRPG can offer real challenge with an open world
Battlefield or Call of Duty multiplayer > any meaningless battleground-pvp in themeparks
Please, just play a JRPG if you want pve and play CoD multiplayer if you want pvp in arenas just for fun, and save the MMO market from single player games whose "content" is busted in one month, and after that, you put your game on the shelf and go to the newest themepark next month.

Mr. Prenho, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
Yeah, sadly I am American and am therefor stupid and only like carebear games. I don't even see a reason why there is a medium mode included in the slider in many games. It should just be: Extreme Easy, Very Easy and Easy. Remove medium and hard and get me through the game already. I want to rescue the princess, not watch my life counter the whole time.
Pretty much every American I know is like this too (I know because I am an American). We even broke the Bell Curve because all of the students in the US are below average. No one thought it was possible because you should just shift the Bell Curve to the left a little to account for it, but no, it's broken now.
Whenever someone uses a light punch on me in Street Fighter 2, I tell them how cheap they are and that they are cheating. They just keep laughing at me though because I'm just an American. One time this guy from Brazil called me a carebear and that I was the reason that all of his games sucked. Since I didn't really understand why he said it, I could only really agree with him. Americans are all carebears and are the reason games suck.
It's ok though, at least I still have easy settings. I really don't want to be challenged because I'm an American. Hopefully game designers will keep making games for Americans only so that they keep getting easier and easier. The rest of the world isn't important to this conversation anyway since Americans are the only people that matter.

I agree massively took it out of context but his full comment doesnt make it look any better
He then goes on to argue that Americans crave individuality, hence the success of monetized avatar customization options, and that games need to treat players "like a celebrity." Finally he points out that Americans tend to have a limited knowledge of world history due to the way the subject is taught in US schools. "Americans know who Steve-O is but not Stalin," he remarked.
He then went on to offer a brief tongue-in-cheek summary of the American understanding of world history:
Romans Vs. Barbarians. Dark Ages, nothing happened. Renaissance, then we got cars and planes. Stuff was going on in China and Japan, too. US got Independence, had Civil War over slavery. Lots of big wars in the last century.
He then summarized his presentation with six tips on how to sell games to American online gamers:
Craft the opening minutes to hold attention. Use a simple, clear interface. Minimize text: show, don't tell in tutorials. The player is a celebrity, give them unique customization. Recognize that we're in the queue and the user is the master. History rarely sells and is often unknown.

what are tips to sell games to European online gamers?

If you don't know why I suggest you read up on current events.

It is not only Americans. It is more general thing. Alot of Europeans and gamers from other part of world are similar in this regard.
And I am from EU, so not like I am defending myself, since article is not singling me out.
STILL when you forget about silly singling out of USA citizens, guy HAVE A POINT.
Gamers nowadays seem that don't accept failure in a game. Also don't want to figure things out on their own.
Hand-holding, spoon-feeding and no consequences in game is current game design.
That's why huge majority of games are fuc*** boring for me.
Seem many people love design like that though.
