I'm certainly not the best at PvP, probably just average. My biggest issue is close to what you describe. When a key moment arises to use a particular skill, somehow i manage to miss the opportunity. At times it's just the excitement of battle, other times it's a lack of situational awareness.
What excites me about GW2 is the ability to improve my skill and understanding of class abilities over time wothout the concern of Massive gear stat issues. I look forward to developing a strong relationship with the available skill and trait options, and understanding how they affect and are affected by situations that come up. All the while not questioning if my success or failure is due to something other than my own ability and knowledge, such as gear.
The best part is thay if I am able to learn from this game, i can take that with me to other games down the road.
sPvP is fun even when you lose. Also, you get glory points from losing as well. And losing will eventually get you better and make you less anxious/uncomfortable when playing.
But for me, the fun of PvP is in the hand shaking and the under pressure choking. When you lose that and get used it, it stops being fun.
You just have a lot of your facts wrong. When people talk about having no advantages in PvP, they should be referring to sPvP, not WvW. Here is a thread about gear progression to dispel any misconceptions you might to have:
Exotic Gear is the max level gear in terms of stats (equal to legendaries)
PvE gear is designed by breaking up the stats of the PvP 798/569/569 amulet and putting it back on gear
Exotic gear at level 80 has 13% better stats than a Rare 80 item
All level 80 exotic gear will have the same "total attribute" points but different gear will have different attribute allocations e.g one exotic glove is 34/24/24 in power/precision/vitality while another is 34/24/24 in toughness/vitality/healing
The four confirmed ways of obtaining exotics are: dungeon tokens, WvW, crafting and the mystic forge. There may be other ways.
There are at least 8 crafted exotic sets that require globs of ectoplasm.
Exotic gear can take a long time to get (44+ dungeon runs or 75+ WvW hours) and this is presumably to offer more desirable stats and skins compared to the crafted sets.
Like I said, in Structured PvP, the most competitive type of PvP, there are no gear advantages. In WvW, there are. Either the people you are reading are misrepresenting the truth or you are misinterpreting what you are reading.
Thanks for the Link it was an interesting read and i am actually looking forward to be crafting Legendarys now XD
However it really does not seem any different than current systems for obtaining better equipment tho (which is fine by me) so i guess its just one of the things regarding GW2 that got blown out of propotion and i am actually looking forward way more now to the 25th since i have my nice carrot back lol
Yup, I agree.
I disagree to the extent that is is much easier to get that gear because there are multiple paths to that gear which is better and easier than only one path. However it has been blown out of proportion about "gear not mattering".
Originally posted by Cashops I don't really feel the need to prove anything to random forum posters, but whether you think im too embarrassed to admit my ineptitude at pvp anonamously on the internet isn't really the topic. How about you at least answer the question if you're gonna troll my thread. Thanks.
You can tell your friend about WvW which is not normalized, includes hundreds of players playing in the same zones of all levels and gear levels. It's more about the fun and strategy than straight skills.
That's a good point! Come to think of it, he may have misunderstood my explanation on the lvl boosting in WvW. While it's normalized to a degree, its nothing like sPVP where there is zero difference. I don't intend to force him into anything of course, it was just jarring to me that he could go from STOKED to MEH just because you can't gear up and roflstomp noobs.
Yeah, there is bolstering. But even with bolstering you see big advantages for people that are higher level. And there will be no bolstering for 80s with varying levels of gear.
So you can get to a point where you have an advantage over a lot of other people. Over time this will become less pronounced as more people spend the time to get top gear, but that happens in every game.
How exactly will the higher lvl players have an advantage?
So far everyone is always fast to say that there is no gear progression so its all player skills which is a good thing cause only because someone spend more time in a game than i do should not mean he should be better than i am.(which could be argued but nvm)
But if you tell me now that the players that spend more time in the game and lvl faster(or maybe explore more and get more points) will have an advantage over the other players than i have to ask what is the point of all the fuss about the non existing gear progression?
It does sound to me as if its the same it was before if you spend more time in the game you have an advantage over players not spending as much time in the game till they caught up.
If they catch up on gear or on lvl/points is really no different than.
So how do higher lvl character get an advantage without falling under some kind of progression rules (which we learned on countless posts does not exist in GW2)
The more you play any game the more you understand how the game works and how to counter skills from other classes and how to use the skills of your class better. So someone that has leveled to 80 will have a better understanding of their skills/class then a level 10 player that just jumps in WvW and is boosted to lvl 80.
Those that play 5+ hours a day are going to have more in game knowledge of other classes and their skills. It will get to a point where the "Hardcore" players know what skills you have based on your weapons and be able to counter your skills with their knowledge levels.
So in short, the more you play any game the more you know about the game and the way it works, the more advanage you have over those that do not have the same time invested.

You can by doing purely WvW and at least in the last BWE, it was actually pretty solid for leveling.
You can not level in sPvP as far as I know.
