Fear not this night. You will not go astray. Though shadows fall still the stars..find their way.
Awaken from a quiet sleep. Hear the whispering of the wind.
Awaken as the silence grows in the solitude of the night
Darkness spreads through all the land and your weary eyes open silently.
Sunsets have forsaken all and must open their eyes now
Nightmares come when shadows grow.... Ice glows and heartbeats slow
Fear not this night. You will not go astray. Though Shadows fall still the stars find their way
And you can always be strong. Lift your voice with the first light of dawn
Dawn is just a heartbeat away. Hope is just a sunrise away
Distant song of melody scoring through the night to your heart.
Auroras make circumstance in the solitude of our life.
Pleading silent arias gently grieving in captive misery.
Darkness sings a violent song yet our hope can still rise up
Nightmares come where shadows grow. Lift your voice lift your heart
Fear not this night. You will not go astray. Though shadows fall still the stars find a way
And though the night skies fill with weakness. Fear not, press on. Hold out and take my hand!
Fear not this night! You will not go astray. Though shadows fall still the stars find a way!
Fear not this night! You will not go astray. Though shadows fall still the stars find a way!
And you can always be strong. Lift your voice with the first light of dawn!
Dawn is just a heartbeat away.... Home is just a sunrise away....

That could have been so great... but everything that is awesome about the original is gone. All that remains are those few piano notes, which by themselves do nothing but remind me of how good the original is. And the way she sings "fear not this night" exactly to those notes just sounds cheesy to me. It gave me some kind of weird Nightwish sinks Titanic on Pandora vibe. Also, for some reason, that awesome piano sound from the original is replaced with something dryer, way less dynamic and impactful. And then there's some really awkward auto-tuning going on.
Some parts are good, but as a whole it doesn't really do it for me.
And... where is this part?? It's the bridge that holds the songs parts together: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YzWlxbg34Y&feature=player_detailpage#t=34s
This is probably the first time i don't praise something made by Jeremy Soule.
Oh thank god I'm not the only person that thinks that.
Play for fun. Play to win. Play for perfection. Play with friends. Play in another world. Why do you play?
Oh whatever! Not you are a music expert.
Fear Not This Night reminds me an awfull lot of MGS4
Not really sure why..
I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. I'm a hobby musician since ~15 years back.

The lyrics don't scan for me personally. She pauses when I think there will be words, sings when I think there will be a break.
Perhaps it is trying to convey the alien feeling of Sylvari music. I just prefer the piano version XD

I'm a hobby music listener for like 30+ years (raised in a family that told me to appreciate all styles, from classic to hard rock), and I like both versions, which are indeed different.

The piano is probably under the "orchestral" textures, it's just played down. they probably added the "orchestra" to make it sound fuller yet add a "bed of sound". The lyrics were probably written after the fact (guess) and they fit the music to it here and there which is why it's not an exact rendition. It's essentially an arrangement.
Since piano isn't a great instrument to accompany a voice, the less percussive orchestral sounds do less to obscure the vocal parts. Since the notes of a piano die away as soon as they are struck there needs to be a constant reiteration of the notes and that can create a busier texture than the lyrics really support. "Fear not this night' lends itself to a more gentle type of texture over a busier more percussive piano texture. If anythhing they might have altered the piano texture to be more homophonic in order to better support the voice and the text. However, the (for lack of a better term) "sonic weight" of the accompaniment might not have been what they were looking for.
but in the end, it's just an arrangment. One could say that Barry Manilow borrowing from chopin or Billy Joel borrowing from Beethoven ruined the inherant greatness of the source material but their songs do stand alone despite that fact.
It's a nice arrangement but I can see it being too sacharin for some people.

I always prefer music w/o lyrics.
Clint Mansell is my fav ATM but I am becoming a big, big fan of Jeremy Soule.
I think lyrics tell you what you should be feeling/thinking where as without lyrics you are left to feel and associate however your mood/disposition etc. inspires you.
so not a fan of opera or art song?

Really depends...
Big fan of acapella though!
To put some "'water in my wine", as we say in my country...
The song is nice, but doesn't even come remotely close to stuff like this for me:

(and Sarah is singing AND playing her own piano...)

on topic, it's sorty of funny that a film teacher of mine proposed, for the sake of argument, that music didn't belong in movies for exactly the reason you give for lyrics: that it told the viewer what they should experience as opposed to allowing the components of the film to do the job.
I wonder if the same could be said for music in video games? that the components of teh video game, the game play, in some cases the social interaction, is all that is needed and that music isn't necessary?
