Anet above all others

sammandarsammandar Member Posts: 523

So my guild just decided tonight to make Sanctum of Rall our server home. I went straight to www.gw2guilds.org to do some research on the server that will be my new home. Not sure how many people know this (I didn't until now), but Sanctum of Rall is named after a gamer who died. After reading the full story behind Anet naming a server after a gamer loved so dearly by his guild, I was very touched.

I guess you could say I've become hardened by the numbers/profit driven companies of late. To see Anet do something like this makes me realize that Anet is more than just another gaming company out to make some money. Obviously Anet needs to make money in order to stay profitable and viable, but this kind of gesture speaks volumes. I guess now more than ever I am more proud of Anet, of GW2, and of the kind of community that I'll be joining (more specifically in Sanctum of Rall).

For those of you who are not aware of the story behind Sanctum of RAll, here's the link:

Cheers!

Yeah that happened right before BWE3 I believe. Really really cool of Anet to do something like that.

I wished more people knew about this, not sure if many do or not (I didn't). If many people knew about this I think it would change their minds about what kind of a company Anet is. I'm not saying Anet is a charity or are perfect, but this kind of gesture does speak volumes. I wished more companies did this kind of stuff, or at least, demonstrated this kind of attention and sensitivity to their playerbase.

I don't want to sound like an asshole or anything , It's sad that a player died , and it's nice of Anet to have named a server after a player...  *sigh* , I'd be blunt but then I'd be hurting peoples feelings.  Let's just hope GW2 lives up to expectations.

I'll be blunt on this though , do your research outside of your "loved" game GW2 to CCP's EVE-Online , because Anet is still light years away from CCP ammount of respect it has to it's players.  So I'll have to disagree that Anet is above all others.

Blizzard has had some similar stories over the years. Of course people around here will accuse them of only doing it for money and publicity...There's not way the developers could have hearts or souls. Only Anet....

Do you go to birthday parties and tell kids Santa isn't real?

Of course 'above all others' was hyperbole. Many many companies have done really nice things and players respect that.

Shut up and enjoy some humanity.

Play for fun. Play to win. Play for perfection. Play with friends. Play in another world. Why do you play?

Erm...he is not "hurting" your company ( CCP ) here! So don't need to be blunt ( or an asshole .. or anything )! Simple, you could just add that CCP is a company who has also respect to his players!

It would have been way better!

While not a sad situation, Rift also does this. Way before Rift even thought about ingame marraiges, they held a ceremony for a couple who wedded in real life.

I was about to say the same thing.

But I would have post scripted it with the addendum of "before they sold their soul to Activision".     Blizzard of today is no longer the same Blizzard of yester-year.  I don't think a company interested in making money is "evil", but I also think we need to be honest and face the fact that many of the solid folks at Blizzard who made games for gamers don't work there anymore.   Realistically, though, the same will be said about ANet at some future point in time.

I am not calling you out on it but I would like to hear these stories. For the sake of remembering why i thought Blizzard was a good company, not for the hating.

I enjoy starcraft 2 still. I even find myself occasionally having fun trying to get loot in D3.

We should try to find even MORE cool stories like this.

Play for fun. Play to win. Play for perfection. Play with friends. Play in another world. Why do you play?

I'm surprised you never heard of Ezra Chatterton  (aka Ephoenix)

There's also The Shrine of the Fallen Warrior. Although that was created for an employee who died.

Not sure if there's other stuff.

Why would you decide to choose a birthday party to inform kids about the myth of santa? Save that for christmas. Birthdays are when you teach children about the realities of death to which thier parents doomed them to because they were selfish jerks that cared more about "passing down thier genes" or making a little version of them then they cared about the inevitable suffering, agony and despair of another human being having to die.
