Hello all,
I have pre-ordered Guild Wars 2 after playing the beta and have been talking with some gaming friend and getting them on board. This wasn't too hard of a sell as we have recently quit, TOR, TERA and TSW as for different reasons, none of them managed to "hook" us and make us want to play.
Anyway, on to the point. I was explaining to a buddy about the lack of the "trinity" in this game, meaning, no dedicated tank, dps, healer. He then had a lot of questions about the group combat and how it is handled. I realized at this point that in my short time in beta, I never was able to group as all of my invites were declined...lol. It was also at this point that I realized I really don't know a whole lot about the game other then I was loving my short time in beta.
I have watched plenty of videos on youtube, but can anyone explain this dynamic in a way that is easy to explain to my friends? I know there is no dedicated healer and everyone has a self heal ability, but are there skills that can heal others? As far as the lack of tank, I have read that there are block abilities along with the dodging that everyone will have to do, but I have read there is no aggro and no taunt, so how do the enemies attack? Is it random or just based on who hits them?
If some of you that have played a lot can explain it, I'd be appreciative. I'm getting really excited to get in on the 25th and I'm trying to get as many freinds as possible to jump in with me.

I would advice you to try to explain it this way
1) instead of a holy trinity there is the roles of Support , Control and Damage , they do away with the healer, tank and dps
2) these roles are mostly flexible (no fixed roles=no holy trinity), meaning that every one can and have to do a little of everything.
There is some support in the form of area of effect healing, but as you can't target friendly players it is not that much. The main support part is actual REZZING others, and offcause giving them boons.
Control is alot more than tanking (and with no threath and to little damage absorbsion , there is only dead tanks in GW2), and there is alot of it.
But the main thing to explain is that because everyone can do a little of everything , and can change builds to do more of what a group needs, there is no need to spend alot of time LFG, instead in GW2 you just play and if it doesn't work out then the group can discuss what is needed ,and everyone can change there builds accordingly and they can try again.
you said you watched youtube videos did you watch these?

Why is a thread called "No Trinity questions" filled with questions about the Trinity ?
(Yes, I know what you actually meant)
Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?
threat is based on a number of things and differs by the mob BUT I think the biggest aspects is proximity and damage. Most mobs will attack what is closer to them or what is doing the most damage.
to answer you about healing others, in short yes some if not all profs have abilities that will heal others. I need to mention something most people forget or refuse to remember. Anet themselves said that most grps trying to be a trinity grp will FAIL. They sais that there would most likely not be enough damage to succeed in the explorables if you tried this. I know there are a lot of ppl on the forums that swear that the trinity isnt dead in GW2 but I think I trust what Anet says about their game, especially when no one on the forums has had enough time to master the game yet.
Honestly, I think even the Support-Control-Damage light trinity viewpoint is something that's a bit misguided to use for GW2. It's too simplistic from my play experience (which is admittedly limited) and from what I've seen in videos and people talking about the game.
1. You don't really focus on just one of them. It's essentially impossible to do this, even going with damage you'll still have Control abilities or Support abilities with any weapon you pick for any class. Granted, Anet doesn't pretend this isn't the case, but lumping three elements together makes people think of Healing, Tanking, and DPSing and thereby dedicated roles.
2. There are a lot of other elements needed to play well, even without combat gimicks. Movement is essential for everyone, but it doesn't really appear above. Dodging and just not remaining stationary matter quite a bit even in normal fights. By making something directly comparable to HT-games, this aspect isn't emphasized how it should be.
3. It doesn't touch on skill combos, which are an important part of the game.
I think there are some other minor issues with it as well.
Overall, I think combat in GW2 is more realistic. Movement and positioning matter a lot. Working together as a team is naturally more synergistic as opposed to forced. There's a lot of flexibility needed in more difficult combats by everyone. Healing is spread out among people, so you actually want to spread out damage (if you can't avoid it entirely).
Pfft? No Holy Trinity? What are you talking about!? This game definitely has the Holy trinity! It's just in the form of a group of enemy bosses in Brisban Wildlands!
