Well, that's it pretty much. It appears those reddit folk were all over that. It would stand to reason they are doing another marketing push next week with the launch. That in turn explains why there is nothing to see this week.

    Yep

    They don't need to

At this point the fans are essentailly marketing it for them anyways.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

I understand the whole viral marketing word of mouth campaign etc. it's far, far cheaper and equally as effective (if your product is quality) but having just about zero "traditional" marketing?

I remember the pre-purchase/order marketing, they had it all over mmorpg.com too, but I am still shocked to be seeing nothing this close to launch.

Bravo to Anet for having the guts to stand by thei convictions and trust in their customer feedback.

    rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar

Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D

They might have blown their budget for advertisment, and seeing the success it had so far it would probably be not worth the $$ to increase it even more as most who actually want to play it probably bought it already.

you can see in the article I posted on previous page Anet planned on using word of mouth from the BWEs

Well, the likely scenarios are that the stress tests showed they can't take a hit of even MORE players initially...

... or that they ran out of money and were given the choice of more advertising budget or paychecks. :D

Because if there's anything GW2 needs, it's more hype?

Well, as a B2P game, it could almost always use more sales.

^^This.   With all the crazy hype of new games and subsequent hate crash, it wouldn't surprise me if the take the quiet road for launch with a steady build upwards.
Wouldn't this theory fly directly against the prevailing opinion on mmorpg.com (well the negative prevailing opinion) that GW2 is the most hyped MMO ever?

The most hyped, and least advertised AAA MMORPG ever? A weird combination in my opinion.

If it is least advertised, then who is doing all this hype? *snicker* I'm JK I know the answer already

Who would that be? *looks at Aerowyn*... I have no idea who could fit such a catagory. >.>

Precisely when something its very popular between people they dont really need much advertising, the people itself is, to make a quick example, do you see in TV spots of "buy a ferrari!!/ lamborgini" ? probably not, they dont need to. So more or less is that.

This is what is REALLY confusing.

They have no recurring income beyond the maybe what, 30% of the playerbase that will spend money in the cash shop regularly (monthly.)

no clue what you are talking about :P heh.. but really it does take some pride in your product to allow word of mouth to be your #1 source of advertisement.. think you should link this to the OP

Perhaps, Aerowyn is the advertising! Aerowyn might be an Advertisement robot, an Ad-bot, created by NCSoft to convert the internet to Guild Wars 2!

    This

Word of mouth is selling it just fine. I expect more advertising next week though around the "Official" release date August 28th.

Because out of anyone Aerowyn is basically in any forum. Unless I feel strongly about something, or am in the right timing, I don't bother to post. By then she's got her grimy hands all over the thread and theres nothing much to cover unless I find someone easy to disagree with that I see hasn't been touched yet to a degree.

On topic: I feel like this game had enough advertisement throughout the BWEs/all the excitement (I don't want to use "that" word)/ and just word of mouth from everyone that advertisement seems pointless and unnecessary. I don't remember much advertisement for GW1, but then again, there wasn't much excitement about it either.

Spock, I'm trying to understand why you are freaking out about this, but I can't.  The fact is, the entire MMO market likely knows all about it.  I'm playing TSW, and my large guild is talking about it.  Those few people who didn't know are now hearing about it daily in our guild chat.  Same goes for my daughter's guild in WoW, and I'm sure every other MMO out there.

Who are they advertising to?  Newcomers to the genre?  Proabably not worth the money it would cost.  Sounds like smart business to me.  They can do some targeted online marketing after launch.  People who will pre-purchase likely already did.  We're also heading into the holiday season soon.  It would be smarter to advertise then if they need to.

A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

I think its possible that advertising doesn't help MMOs at all, and is really just a massive waste of money.  There's plenty of hype around any major game release, and if people like it, word spreads like crazy ..and if people don't, advertising never does much to make up for it.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
