    Who knows.

But it will be fine never the less.

Some will, some will not. Dont make conclusions so early. Not everyone likes power progression.

Still it is not to say there is 0 of it :P

Main MMO at the moment: Guild Wars 2
    Waiting for: Pathfinder Online

My first MMO was EQ2.  It was amazing to me the first time i played it.  Then i tried WoW like 2 months later, and have been playing MMOs since.  That first experience is unforgettable.  :p

Hmmm I think there is a sizable contingent of MMO players that play games for different reasons than you do.  I, for example, love MMORPGs but I have never gotten max level in any game except AoC...and I only got max level there because it was ridiculously easy to get exp at this wagon thing.

The fact of the matter is that grinding raids or whatever just doesn't appeal to me, so I would always quit or create an alt before the game got to that point.  I really think I'm not the only player out there like this...

Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?

I agree. However, GW2 is about as close as I will ever get to the feeling I got the first time playing Asheron's Call. I dropped in after the short intro area, and then just started wandering, finding neat things to look at and kill along the way. GW2 is the first mmo I have played in a long time where I just don't care how quickly I get to the top because I am enjoying the journey.

Not to mention the music of Jeremy Soule reminds me so much of my time getting lost in Skyrim too.

Definitely going to depend on the person.

Will it replace your first MMO experience? Absolutely not. Just like a first kiss, there is always a unique (often highly biased) memory of that first experience. However, it's entirely possible for GW2 to give you a similar (but different) experience.

I really think some people need to stop trying to treat this game like a 2nd version / replacement of the game they are coming from. Treat it like a new experience. For me, GW2 most definitely does give this awesome feeling of getting lost in a massive world, where you are never 100% sure what's going on around the next corner. That sense of wanderlust and discovery is something that has definitely been missing from most new MMOs for a long time now. I think that, along w/ the heavy emphasis on skill-based gameplay, could be enough to give you that 'refreshing' feeling again.

luckily there IS power progression, and cosmetic progression, and crafting progression, skill progression and so on for people who want it. I don't consider endless Tiers of gear the only form of power progression like Otinanai does

I have no idea how big the population will be, there are are also people in my category who will bounce between GW2 and 1-2 others.....

I fully plan to buy the Rift expansion. I'll go back and forth and have fun too.

Essentially, yup.  There are exceptions, I'm certain--but the smart money bets against, without knowledge of other factors.

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

Obviously, this is an incredibly personal issue, not everyone will feel this way. Just my 2 cp.

    ^ This.

I was thinking about this and trying to think the last time I actually felt this way about a game.

EQ was my first as well back in '99, and it definitely gave me that magic feeling.

I only had one other time I recall feeling this excited about a release and that was City of Heroes in '04.  I was building and rebuilding heroes for months before the release as powers became known, and I was so excited at the first superhero MMO to come out.

Absolutely loved Planetside as well, but I honestly don't recall a giddy feeling like EQ, CoH, and now GW2.

They gave me quite a long time of enjoyment before abandoning them.  However, no delusions here, it will happen with GW2 as well, but I'm hoping to get just as long of an entertainment value out of it as I did with the others.  Can't wait for tomorrow.

    OP

Yes, if you allow it to though it gets harder with every new title. Sure it won't be the same, every experience will be different, but you can still have that wonderment felling if you see this as a new experience.

When you read threads here about "this is no different because x, y and z do it too", that's the kind of attitude where it won't be as special.

I've already spent more time wandering around in GW2, soaking up the world and atmosphere, eyes wide, chuckling with glee, than I have in any other game in years.  And there's still so much more I want to see!  For me personally, I can already definitively say it has brought back the magic.

Of course no MMO will ever recreate the pure wonder and novelty of the moment when you first realized those characters running around were actually other players.  All novelty concepts associated with the MMO genre and the joy they brought are in the past for MMO vets.

But more beautiful, living breathing, persistent virtual worlds do await us!

I'm sorry, I cannot help myself...

    Obvious shill is obvious.

Futher, it begs the question. Who garners greater respect, those getting paid to spread truth, half truths, and lies? Or those who blindly do it for free?
