I really dont se how a first impression means as much for Guild Wars 2. By the time you get the impression you already purchased the game They do not have to keep you playing for a monthly fee they got you money already. I guess they will want you buying gems but most will give it a try later after it calms down it not like you have to pay a monthly fee again to try it. Guild Wars 2 will be just fine no matter how bad a launch.
Originally posted by Mephster I am pretty much shocked ArenaNet has dropped the ball this hard. Sure no launch is ever perfect but this has to be one of the worst launches in a long time. It kind of reminds me of AOC launch or Warhammer launch to some extent. ArenaNet had so much time with the game to already and to have a launch like this is inexcusable. Though you can't say you weren't warned, people told you so and the diehards did not want to listen. Hope you guys who are still playing make the best of it.
It's really obvious you dont have much mmo experience.
Even if it failed less then all the other MMO's...it is still a failure in my opinion. I do not fuss or worry about it, but I do not believe we should give companies some slack because they have made it standard by constantly launching games this way.

Just more excuses. I understand it hurts to see GW2 launch fail but hey facts are facts. Beta is over, this is the real deal now. Glad to see you understand.
And you are being unrealistic. GW2 is arguably the BIGGEST launch in MMO history. Show me one that's bigger. I'd say that would make it nigh impossible to predict the level of traffic. That does not excuse the complete network failure (we dont have all the details of what actually happened) but explains what to humanly expect.
Stuff like this happens. Its sucks big time. But not much we can do about it. Complaining isn't going to fix it. And it will be up as fast as humanly possible.
And to your point, this IS NOT Launch. Its Pre-launch... that just so happened to have a massive global audience. Speaks to the draw of the game. Hoping the 28th will be better. But who knows? Maybe the traffic will triple and the servers go down again.
So yes Pre-Launch is FAIL... but in the end I don't really care, as long as I get to play the game at some point.
What fustrates me is the waiting... but Ill get over it. Everyone else should too.

Actually he's onto something, I've been in 10 mmorpg launches so I have some experience, and only 1 out of 10 was a smooth launch. That's why I'm not raging atm, I dont expect mmorpgs to launch smooth because the launch is separate from the quality of the game, no matter who made the game.
What's important is the fact that those 4 hours I managed to play today, the game it self was working perfectly for me, so I know when they get these third-party problems out of the way, the game will be great.
First impressions are the most important thing to me, but I dont count launch day as a first impression because it does not reflect the game when the launch is done. First impressions are stuff like animations working, quests / events working, abilities working, and so forth, stuff that happens in the game, stuff that will be there after the launch storm is over.
You just proved to me what I been saying but you know the diehards refuse to understand. Even the dev admits this. People just need to get over themselves and deal with reality. As being a long time Guild Wars player in a way I feel sorry for ArenaNet but don't promise what you can't deliver. They been saying when it's ready for years and now apparently that was all talk because they released fully knowing it was not going to work right. They could have pushed back headstart to get it right but they failed. Now like many other mmos devs ArenaNet will unforunately suffer.
Being fair to those that people state are trolling it has been a pretty woeful day.
The only MMO I ever played that was this bad on launch day was SWG so much so that most of us didnt get on until the day after launch.
It doesnt bother me the few hrs I got in the game this moning made me more than believe the wait will be worth it, I avoided beta for months so so a couple of days whilst they sort these issues doesnt bother me, a weekend of football beckons and I might go out for a long cycle tomorrow if the issues persist.

The main difference is that those games were flawed in many ways aside from launch issues. Once the servers get sorted there is a good game there that many people have played and enjoyed. These are different issues from AoC and WAR
This is some basics that most people don't seem to think about right now. They are too pumped and busy nerdraging.
2 weeks from now this has fallen into oblivion and people will instead bitch and moan about classes beeing unbalanced and so forth.

Yeah, because you want to be know as the guys who don't care if the game works, as long as we already have their money.

Biggest launch in mmo history no, not by a long shot. Biggest failure in mmo history, they are there in the top 10 somewhere. Reality hurts but we'll get over it and wait for the next best thing to come along.
WoW is one of those exceptions because WoW has a huge and loyal fanbase especially in China. Noone ever has been able to fully recouperate from a disasterous launch day except WoW. That is saying a lot about how Blizzard separates themselves from everyone else when it comes to mmos. GW2 will suffer a lot because of this bad launch.
WOW didnt launch in Europe until March 2005 - 5 months later
WOW didnt launch in China until June 2005 - 8 months later
at launch WOW was boasting less than 500,000 players: mostly North American
World of Warcraft sold over 240,000 copies at retailers in North America on Tuesday, November 23, selling more in its first 24 hours than any other PC game in history.
World of Warcraft Sets New Milestone With 1.5 Million Subscribers Worldwide (March 2005)
I honestly don't see why so many people are making such a huge deal out of this.
The launch went perfectly last night! I logged in at midnight eastern (3 hours before technical launch, but they had mentioned that possibility in email) and it worked perefectly. I created my first five characters, bought some gems, got 3 of the characters up a few levels and and then went to bed at around 6am eastern I think (can't remember exact time). Even with all the people playing the servers handled well, there was no real lag and I had an absolute blast.
I woke up and find out the servers went down for three hours before they got them back up... Okay, not great, but not the end of the world. Servers going down happen to EVERY online game.
People that have been waiting for this game for so long have every right to get butt hurt and not want to hear that this launch is a failure so far. Yes When the servers first opened 3 hours early...it was great. most ppl were asleep or didnt know the servers were up early, but now that the game is officially out and everyone is wanting to play...all of arenanet goes down. Im not saying that they cant fix this or make good..hell who knows the servers may be up in an hour and never go down again with a super lag free experience..but im not beting on that. I got on at early server arrival and made all my characters...minimal lag. went to bed and can no longer play the game. ive been coming back ever 20 min or so and hitting "play" only to shed a tear. i love the products Arenanet puts out and im so far a fan of guildwars 2 through the betas and whatnot but this launch is one of the most disappointing in a log time. and when i say that im not saying that this is the worst launch just the most disapointing because I along with millions have been waiting for soooooo long for this. Best of Luck Arenanet...have you tried forcing an unexpected reboot?

Nothing is perfect dude, nothing is perfect. JUST saying the PRE-LAUNCH on DAY ONE is rocky does not come close to making it a BAD game. If you have that high of standards I don't think anything will please you.
When the issues subside over time I'm still going to play the game because the game itself is pretty good.
My first impression is, I'm glad I got to start a little more than 3 hours early than head-start was suppose to start so I could secure my server and names with my family/friends/guild.

Well, you do know this still isn't launch?
I know you probably forgot about SWTOR, but it took me 5 - 6 hours to get into the server for the first time... So yeah, this is nothing... The game worked fine in the morning and I was playing for 4-5 hours so it's pretty good...
Not because servers were down LOL. SWTOR had the best launch. The only problem was the que to the servers and it was mostly not more then 15 minute. Lets not exaggerate.

Arenanet dropped the ball. Stop bashing posters in a vain attempt to defend the game.
You can't even login into their website ffs.
It's true in this case, however. If you're whining at this point, you need some help. Like, serious therapy or something.
