Playing on Blacktide server currently. Last night in chat there was talk of it becoming an 'unofficial Polish/Russian server'(?) Is this just silly talk from a few players? What server are other UK players using? Not that I want a purely English population. I'd prefer a general European one with English speaking chat as was intended by the devs. Why do people want to segregate themselves in this way?

It's common practice for communities of certain countries to group up on certain servers. I know for instance that the Flemish (the Northern part of Belgium) are gathering on Far Shiverpeaks. It becomes a problem when you get a community that doesn't have English on a high priority in the school programs.
As to the reason for this "segregation": it's mostly a matter of easy communication i suppose. The same reason why some people join a "national" guild, just because it makes it easier for them, as they can use their own language in their interactions with their guildies.
Admittedly, it does create a "problem" towards the rest of the server.
Have you seen the xenophibic crap English speaking players spew when players talk in broadcast channels in anything other than English? This is primarily why players of certain nationalities always try and congregate on servers unoficcially when there is no official language server for them to choose. Try communicating in a language you barely speak and then get ripped to pieces because you can't speak it properly. I for one would love to see a game introduce all French/Chinese/German/Spanish/Russian/Korean etc and NO English speaking servers for a social experiment, let the English-only players get a taste of what they force upon others.
Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy
this site has a great listing of all servers and their unofficial designation

3rd option - hope the blocklist is not capped at a certain number Though I'm not a native English speaker, I tend to block everyone that doesn't chat English in the general (/MAP for GW2) chat. Even those speaking my native tongue...
I posted about this several times before.
Be very very careful when choosing your server GW2
Here this will help you

While I understand the wish to speak your mother thongue on public chat , there is nothing more annoying than map chat spammed with languages you can not understand.
yeah but funny enough were my first and second choice full so my guild is rather spread around right now.
There will be a free home server transfer in a month so hopefully can we all change to the right server eventually.
And yes, it is rude to chat in a foreign language except in the guildchat, English is not my first language but the only one I use in a game besides in whispers and the guildchat.
Truth has been spoken...
No it hasn't. Its just rude to speak in a language that not everyone can understand and people get annoyed with that its not even just english people you know its also second language europeans from different cultures trying to communicate. The polite and correct way would be to speak the language the game is in in the first place.
I would not play a game in a foreign language unless I could speak a bit of it and try and mold into the community but hey what do I know Im apparently just a xenophob english person that tries to show respect to the community Im trying to blend in with. I even tried to learn the basics of norweigan once to play with a norw guild.
The hypocricy of modern day human rights spouted by people too young to have experienced life vanquishes the correct civility and manners that should be inplace and dredges society into their pit of stupidity.
This, and usually the only thing that happens is that you get the ones trying to force language issues just end up on peoples blocked lists, seen it happen enough times to know its probably not going to change, and no matter if the language in general chat is english, it doesnt stop guilds forming based on language, never has. So its a bit of a none issue imo. Part of the problem is most likely, that although arenanet would like to supply more language based servers for none english speakers, beyond french and german, there probably isnt enough numbers to make it practical.
That's a good thing. I rolled on Far Shiverpeaks (EU) but will probably migrate to Desolation.
MMORPG genre is dead. Long live MMOCS (Massively Multiplayer Online Cash Shop).
Spoken both as English men from UK I bet. As for me a Syrian, I speak Dutch, German, English, Turkish, Arabic and also understand some Aramaic an ancient and rare language.
I am neither hypocrite nor am I too young to have experienced life as you say it. Infact I am better adaptable then most people I know. I just do not, and never will support a globalist agenda, wich is supported by the masses that call themselves western civilization. In any case, what westerners call civilization, the others would call barbarity, because it is precisely lacking in the essential, that is to say a principle of a higher order. So long as western people imagine that there only exists a single type of humanity, that there is only one ''civilization'', at different stages of development, no mutual understanding will be possible.
I still stand by what I said, ZinZan made a point, and I supported his stance.
Civilisation is a definition, it is not a point of discussion. It existed at the beginning of man in the form of tribes - to today and if we manage to keep going it will also exist in the future.
Go argue with the dictionary please.
I'm from Poland and based on the lecture of polish community site forums, Blacktide is suppose to be the unofficial polish server, while the russian community plans to make Vabbi their unofficial server. Making one server unofficial for both polish and russian players would probably result in a civil war on that server :P.
Mind you that a lot of people from Poland may join the game on 28th or later, becouse the price of preorder from Anet was too high for a lot of people and there wasn't many prepurchase codes availble from polish retailers.
On the other hand, big part of polish players don't join one particular server, instead they spread around on all english servers (usually, they are those players who know english on a level sufficient for basic communication, or higher).
there are not such thing
officialy blacktide is english speaking server and if you dont follow the rules you can be blocked from using general/world chat
other servers will be added in later time like it was in gw
In global chat - speak global language
In private/guld chat - speak personal language
Imagine you are at a dinner party at your (let say for sake of discussion) Hungarian friends.
And whole time they are speaking , laughing , joking on hungarian. Even though they know you can not understand a word.
I doubt you would accept their invitation again.
That's such a failed comparison.
It'd be more like:
Imagine you are on a public square in one of the capital cities of europe, and while you're talking to your friends, minding your own business, other people around you chat in a variety of different languages.
What would happen if someone walked over to a group of students from country XY and told them to "effin' start conversing in proper [insert local language]"? - Exactly, people would call you a racist b****, and rightfully so.
An MMO is not a dinner party, not an invitational, not a cozy little club-meeting. It's a international, commercial platform accessed via a paid service.
