It wasn't NCSoft itself but an investment company that made that prediction when analysing the future of NCSoft stock.

400,000+ concurrent users is just insane, to put that into perspective, I believe SWTOR topped out at just under 350,000 and that was over a holiday period. Over a million pre-purchases (which won’t include pre-orders + day one sales) is simply amazing too.

The game has got off to a great start.

Is a F2P MMO or game, u cant compare it with a P2P launch, there is just a lot of people who dont buy P2P games because it have a sub, is not the case of gw2, so u cant make comparision with P2P games, are 2 different markets, and still a P2P mmo like swtor sold over 1.7 Mill of copies at launch, as a f2p overhyped MMO gw2 should have sold more than 3 mill of copies, i remember ncsoft talking about that number, and is not even close. For a B2P game, i dont know if 1 mill is a good number.

I think you need to go back and re-read the numbers, it's had over 1 million "pre-purchase" sales that’s completely separate from "pre-order" sales which is on top of this figure. The only way to pre-purchase was to buy it direct from Arenanet. Pre-order sales which this excludes are retail sales from everywhere else as in box sales. The actual total launch sales figure is going to be much higher.

I’m not sure where you are coming from about two different market's, the fact GW2 has no sub is irrelevant when comparing launch figures.

About right for a popular ip. I highly doubt they will reach much more than that. I expect maybe a push for Christmas but after that it is slim pickins because mostly by that time people who wanted to play already have.  Next year we will see the fanbase decline when the next big thing hits the hype charts.

Aion, Lotro, Aoc and Warhammer all got around 1 mill sold at launch. What is so troll about it ? It is pretty much a proven fact. What is also a fact that those games died out within 6 months. So there is another fact finder for you. Troll on brotha!

You don't need commercial advertising when you have facebook and twitter.

its not a bad figure though, sw;tor was advertised a hell of a lot more after all, and GW2 could probably sell another million maybe in the next 2 - 3 months.. thats not bad really. image

    What's even more hilarious?

ArenaNet didn't need such a obsene development budget like Bioware had for SW:TOR.

And to kick EA/Bioware even harder in the nuts! ArenaNet made a much much better game.

It just goes to show yet again, that having an insane budget doesn't automatically translate into delivering a better game. EA/Bioware has proven that.

in my little corner of the world GW2 has outsold WoW:Cataclysm an hour after opening. Completely sold out and taking orders on next shipment. On a side note, I have had a contest going for a free cata expansion for the last couple months. nobody entered. not even once! lol

There are some sour grapes in this thread.  Congrats to ANet, it'll only go up from here.

Maybe its not on TV or the radio but every gaming site I see has GW2 stuff plastered all over it......I actually thought it would sell more the way people on this site were talking about it.

IMO, the pre-purshuce will be bigger, like most mmorpgs. My prediction was always of about 1.5 million in the first month (don't know about the future since i don't read it). Hvae to wait and see.

I also wonder if this meets NCsoft's desires.

What they said was they sold over 1 million PRE-PURCHASE copies ONLY, they didn't count the pre-orders, todays digital sales and I doubt they have a real information of how many copies was sold on the 1st day in retail stores. So I expect numbers to get bigger as we get the real sales number.

Most of the people who were going to play this game already pre purchased it. Sales today probably were in the few thousand, maybe 10's of thousands.  If it was a substantial number they would mentioned it in thier report

just like swtor id say 75% of the people who're going to play preordered it.   Kind of funny how people on this site predicted 2-3 mil preorders it didnt even dent what swtor did and ill bet my house GW2 will not sell more then swtor did in the first 6 months. By the way swtor sucks not a fan i hated it.  I do llike GW2 but im realistic about the type of game it is.

Not to bring wow into this but MOP will sell 3-4 times this in 1 week at dam near the same price.

Errr... the numbers for pre-orders aren't in yet, including the ones that had GW2 on 4 of the top 10 spots on Amazon.

we dont know how many sold on launch since this is pre purchases only

I think now after reading all of these comments and remembering the days when you thought the actual number of people that bought the game is what made the game good, that I can now say it doesn't matter how many people bought this, I'm having fun in it and I'm going to ride the GW2 train for quite a while. It's got high replayability in my book, and its an mmorpg so new stuff will always be on the way. So what I now have is a high replayablity, sustainable, buy to play mmorpg, goodbye World of warcraft. I kind of feel bad for rift because they are good, but with this nice of a buy to play product its not worth my sub to play rift over GW2 and wow is for little kids now since 2008
