How to be a healer in GW2?

EllieAnneEllieAnne Member Posts: 23

Apparently, I am one of a dying breed in MMORPGs, that of a full-time healer.  I'm planning on playing GW2 but it seems that there is no pure healer.   From the description, a necromancer may be clase but it is so hard to tell.  I tried SWTOR and there are a few classes that can do some healing, but I'm talking someone who can buff her party, heal, cure, etc.

Knowing all that, what would be a good class to play to be a healer?

From whit I have seen all classes have forms of condition removal and other buffs/benfits for support but none have direct heals other than for self. Sorry to say but this game just isn't about that, if you'r really stuck to that playstyle you might not like it.

    It is what it is.....

Engineer has a healing turret and at high levels can have supply crates dropped in for support.

A elemental can focus mostly on healing and support but people will ask you to bring out some of that sweet fire at times.

You cant just heal but you can spend a lot of your time supporting the other players if you want to and play good enough.

The closest you might be able to come is Elementalist and use water a lot.  It is not a WoW paladin or GW1 monk who spams heals, but it does help.

    Couple of things there -

    1) There are not professions that do just healing. The bottom line is that this game does not have the "holy trinity" (healer, tank, dps).

    2) However - there are professions that have more healing spells and boons/conditions then others. I would recomend checking in to a staff or mace/focus guardian. You may like what you find.

If you truly only enjoy "Holy Trinity" (Tank/Healer/DPS) healing then GW2 might not be the game for you. You can't target Allies and there are no Direct Single Target Heals.

    HOWEVER

If you wouldn't mind something more "action-y" where you can still play a strong Support Role, there are actually many Professions (GW2 Classes) that could work for you

    • Elementalist with certain Weapons get a large number of Support and minor-AoE Healing Skills.
    • Guardians also get a lot of Support Healing and Buffing Skills.
    • Mesmers are really good at clearing Conditions and can get a "Battle Rez" ability.
    • Rangers can provide a large number of Buffs to Allies but are more Offensive-Combat-Focused in nature.
    • Warriors actually make fantastic Support Characters with Banners, Shouts, and a Warhorn
    • Engineers have a lot of Support Abililities.

And I'm sure that Thief and Necromancer also have strong Support Builds.

It's a different way of playing as you apply many buffs by using Weapon Skills so you will be a Combatant, but you can provide a lot of Support in the game if that is your interest.

Hope this helps and I wouldn't say you are a truly dying breed - it's just that GW2 does things a little differently.

I am  with the OP i absolutely love to heal so I made a Guardian becuase the greatest problem I had being a priest was that I squishy as hell :D I love being able to take damage whilst support my fellow players with my shouts, shield spells :) Just trait heavily into support.

I don't think there is even a single, targetable heal in the game so no real healers.  You heal by area effect heals which are naturally smaller than self heals or they would be way over powered.  Guardian and Elementalist probably have the most skills/traits that can heal but they are still  no where near a "healer" as in any past games.

no worthwhile healer spec in GW2. Everyone carries their own survival tools. You can probably get a setup that can heal and buff but it won't be a critical need in GW2 for groups. Still, it's in their for you to play if you want, to some extent.

The game uses a new trinity of Damage, Support, Crowd Control. Of that, I think you would lean most towards support.

Support wise, Engineer is quite amazing and does have some healing tools available to it to provide that healing (Healing Kit being one) but it also has some supportive features that can boost the group.

Guardian is another type that might be good, giving some good supportive buffs to allies and able to aid in that form.
