The response to GW2 is different

eccotoneccoton Member UncommonPosts: 1,340

I have read a bunch of comments similar to, "Here we go again GW2 is just hype. People said Secret World, SWTOR, etc are the best games ever but then after a few weeks people say they stinks. The response to GW2 is the same and will ultimately fail. After the first few days people will see the light and leave the game." So many are claiming the postive response to GW2 is only new game hype.

I have been here at mmorpg.com for many years and I have never seen such a positive response to any mmo so soon. This is not new game hype. The reason so many love GW2 is because it is indeed very good. Guild Wars 2 is a polished game that is familiar but new for even they oldest mmo verterans. Now this does not mean everyone will like it but people are responding to it because it is a top product and you feel you are getting your money worth. GW2 is worth the price of admission and add no monthly fee you got a winner.

I am not going to review the game, it does have it's problems but as for me I am very satisfied with GW2 and the 150 dollar collector edition. I have bought many collector's editions over the years and GW2 gives you your money worth there too. This is a great product. The only negative so far is customer service. Hopefully they work this out or you are lucky and do not need to contact them. CS aside GW2 is fantastic and is not just another average game being inflated by new game hype. GW2 is the real deal.

For the past few days my computer as been dying after start up because of a bad power supply. I only get to play GW2 in 30 minute bursts. But still everyday I sit there for 15 minutes pressing the power button hoping the computer will turn on and I can get back in game. Hopefully ill get a check here in a couple days and can get the computer fixed but until then ill continue to play like this because the game is just a breath of fresh air. I havent had a moment yet that seems similar to another MMO. The HUD even is very stylish and Skyrim-Esque in its simple classy design.

Guild Wars 2 is just a class act of a game, its made by a dev team who obviously are gamers first and suits second. Dont get me wrong this is still a AAA Online game, but its at least the most original one and in my opinion the most beutiful visually. Theres just so much to grab my attention in the world and druring each fight and and the moments of peace walking with one of my ranger pets in the forest seems so much more enthralling.

Theres something more Fun to me about GW2 than games like Skyrim, I love both games equally but Skyrim is a much more of an in your face mature serious fantasy. Guild Wars 2 feels more like Im watching my favorite saturday morning cartoon. It truely is a classic RPG. I got hooked right from the start with its awesomly eleaborate character creation, anyone else?

Why so many people trying to convince us GW2 is oh so special?

Why posts with tips on "how to enjoy the game"?

You sound desperate and I don't see any reason why you should be. The game is doing fine. Really, it is.

We will see in a few months time.

Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.

For me it diliverd what they promised.

Fun....so much fun i cannot remember when i had fun leveling in a game, mnatter of fact i never liked leveling in mmo's, they where a mean to get to last level and start the game.

In GW2 the game realy starts at level 1, discovering skill points, Dynamic Events, Map Completion, doing WvW and join battlegrounds.

Its all fun, now it wont hold that fun for 1.5 years, but i think Arenenet is wokring hard on the 1st Expansion already ;)

They have a few hickups, and the Black Trading Post is offline, but i can kive with it, its not gamebreaking and it is getting fixed.

Best game money can buy and it all comes without a subscription, what more can you ask for ?

Haters gonne hate it, alot...but who cares ? AA is next on the hate list same as Planetside 2, repopulation is the one after that.
As long as a studio dilvers what they promised they should earn money and win a loyal fanbase.

Seriously GW2 = just massive fun and a super cool addition to the mmo market, specialy after all the failures we had in since WoW.

GW2 is one of the better themepark fantasy MMORPGs on the market.. is it different? bits of it are but mostly its the same thing we have seen before.. Does it live up to all the super hype?

    No..

Will it do well in the furture?

I think the active population will drop off in a few months but it will always retain a decent amount of people.

I'm playing an hour or two a day myself; it's the most fun I've had in a long time.  The way I'm treating it is as a High Fantasy, High Adventure game in a living and breathing world.  I'm just a knight in armor, traveling the country side and helping folk in need.  I also can't stay afk for a while, as the game really is living and I've died multiple times by going AFK in a fort or town or "safe" area, only to have events spawn on me or undead or centaurs raid the place to raid and pillage.

The combat has become really great indeed what with me now constantly able to switch weapons, weapon combos, set up utility and interact with other classes to add more depth.  There's quite literally no down time with the combat once you get the hang of it.  :3

Best of all, I'm also playing FFXIV and WoW concurrently, perhaps even more so than GW2.  This is special to me because GW2 is something I can stop playing on a whim and not have guilt about a monthly fee that I'm paying, or try to force myself to play to stay gear so that I can actually experience new content.

Quite honestly, I don't know how anyone could hate it.  I have to convince myself that people like all different types of things and that's fine, but my mindset always resorts back to that most who hate on it by now, haven't actually played it.

Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing).  German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century.  Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now).  I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things).  In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while.  If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.

Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this.  If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own.  Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis.  Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.

Actually OP, since i've been lurking for a long time, during TSW's launch, it was filled with positive and well received threads. The majority was "WOW, this is actually good". I guess the reason was because many didn't like Funcom. As of right now, however, 2 months after launch, things seem to be coming down somewhat (not hating on the game either btw).

As far as not being new game hype, well, this as been seen with literally every mmorpg in the past. As GW2 been better received? Yes, and i can understand why. While i don't find it that different from other themeparks from what i tried in beta, it's, IMHO, the best of them.

However, there lies the issue Just because GW2 might actually be the best offer, doesn't mean it's a great one. What i'm saying is not that the game sucks, but, that it must still stand the test of time like all others. Just being better doesn't mean it will stand. But, that's what waiting is for.

Also, as long as YOU are having fun for now, and feel you got your money's worth, that's all that matters. Cheers OP.

True. In some cases things were kinda obvious after a day though, AoC, DF and WAR were all so poorly coded that failure sadly was assured.

TOR is different, its problem is that it isnt a MMO so it feels like you are doing most of the stuff alone. A lot of people did enjoy it for a few weeks but tired after that. The same thing might happen to GW2, hard to say yet, but not for the same reason. TOR miss a lot of the social feeling that a MMO should have.

But of course you never know how something will feel a year from now. What I do know is that I have fun now and worrying that it wont be fun 2 months from now doesnt seem like the best option.

GW2s annoyances so far is mainly that the servers are overfull so my guild is splitted out on 3 different servers but I think we will fix that pretty soon.

If it's a power supply problem, then I'd strongly advise against gaming until you can replace the power supply.  In fact, you should mostly leave the computer off until you can replace the power supply.  You don't want to mess with a bad power supply, or else it might otherwise not be only a power supply problem.

What video card and processor do you have?

The response has indeed been very positive to start out. Unfortunately I believe that soonish it will turn a bit sour for the folks who start getting to the end of the pve content. Those that don't transition to pvp will probably complain.

I have no connection with anet. I am a college art professor. People use to say similar things about me when I use to post about eq2. In fact a couple people claimed I was John Smedley and were serious about it.

I stand by my comments regarding the response. Yes games like TSW had great initial response as SWTOR did but not to the extent that GW2 has. Sure longevity will tell but I was commenting on the response to the game in the first few days of release. I also mention will they be able to maintain it. I hope but only time will tell.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here, and say, I bet this will be the first MMO in years that will grow in population, during its first few months.  I don't think it's all hype, I think the word of mouth on this one is so strong, because so many people are enjoying the hell out of it.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

yeah and a few months will come and go and it will still be living up to the hype yet you basement dwellers who bash the game every step of the way will say its something else wrong with it and say give it 6 months then a year until everyone hates it!. Just accept it, a lot of us are having fun and there is little to nothing you can say or do to stop that . You seriously think the sandbox minority on this site is going to make some polished title and sell as many as guild wars 2? All these 400000 concurrent users seem to enjoy the game , and guess what in game its almost fully positive reviews even from people in the higher levels? Grow up and stop being a hater seriously , we do not care what the doomsayers here that are all negativity say.

I agree. I started the post to explore they whole response to the game. I mention how much I like it but I did not review it. I am not selling it to anyone. Where I teach we have a game simulation program and the students are talking about it. I went to our little local gamestop this morning and everyone was talking about it. So word of mouth is happening here. something i never saw with TSW or SWTOR, two games people are claiming GW2 will suffer the same fate. I think not.

He has a point to an extent. The board hasn't been hammered with negativity as you see many other times. Nothing that is really a complete letdown to do so outside some launch issues.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

I agree with Kuppa here to an extent. I think that the scaling system might add some pro-longed pve fun to the mix for those that are completionists. But Kuppa does raise a good point, ultimately the end game in gw2 is pvp, and I hope that most people realize this. While the DE's and the heart quests can be fun the games goal is ultimately WvW.

I am interested to see what happens down the road, and how fast Arena Net is planning to release new content for those pve minded players.

I agree that is the big issue that no one can predict. I think that this maybe the game that opens many players to the fun of pvp. However, that depends on how anet handles pvp and WvW.  GW2 may convert a lot of pve'rs to pvp.

That's a pretty shaky limb. I don't see a lot of long-term viability in GW2, especially with the normalized pvp. I expect the population to dip significantly after a few months.

Edit: My personal response is that GW2 is..."ok". It's neither as great as some fans post here, nor as bad as some trolls claim. I don't see it as being that much different than other high-fantasy theme parks, except that it just happens to be the newest kid on the block.
