SWG against DAoC

Ok this may sound like another newbie topic but guess what, im a newbie!

Anyhow about 7 months ago i entered into the MMORPG world with Star Wars Galaxies which to a first time player of the genre, the game looked (and sounded) amazing but as the months went by the excitement factor was drying up. I love the freedom of the game and the planet graphics and the less "rigid" feel to the game, but i was getting bored with the constant grind and same thing again and again by the end of my last month a blew away 1Million on jukeboxes so i could listen to the music not usually found in the game. So i finally called it quits and canceled the account.

I have started playing DAoC on the recommendation of a friend i have the original game + shrouded isles so needless to say the graphic quality is not brilliant (i will have to wait for catacombs for a decent upgrade - UK person here). The game itself and the content so far is brilliant the grinding isn't as boring as Galaxies but then again i have only been playing for a month. The community i feel is good too, the only downfalls i see on it are the strengths on Galaxies. DAoC seems more rigid and with less freedom compared to Galaxies aswell as non fighting content and the surrounding and guild system are not as good as Galaxies.

My problem is that i like both games but i am only prepared to pay for one, both games have their strengths and weaknesses (if only they learn from one another) and theres a tiny part of me that yearns to go back to Galaxies even with the lack of content too see what "might" be, the other part of me sais stick with DAoC, a good solid game but i still miss the freedom of Galaxies.

My question is basically, how should i decide which one to go with and do you have any opinions on the matter?

At the moment i am 50% 50% and don't know which one to go with so your comments really do matter!

Thanks

One way to spice up the gameplay in SWG is to go overt.Pick a faction and new profession that is inclined to be good in combat.Going for open PvP everywhere adds depth and excitement to the game itself.Afterall the history behind SWG is about combat in space or otherwise.

If i remember right its not difficult to go overt. This would add more RP immersion as well.

    Want to ENJOY an mmo?

Dont start a guild and dont be a leader or volunteer to be coleader or captain.

    Just play the damn game:)

I had a similar experience with SWG, and since the new dev team has taken over and started implementing their changes, I have returned, and couldn't be happier (the immersion factor is WAY better, the GCW actaully means something).

I suggest reading up on what's new in SWG since you left, and reading up on the CU, which is arguably the most anticipated update in the genre (with the exception of the CoV expansion, perhaps).

That way you're able to make a more highly informed decision. Also, SWG is probably a lot different than it was when you left, so you might be coming back to something you won't enjoy as much, or you might be coming back to your new favorite game.

Before you choose (or before you re-activate your SWG account), make sure you check those changes out, so you know what you're gettin into. As for me personally, the game has finally gone in the direction I always felt it should.

As for DOAC, I played it a WHILE back, and couldn't speak much to the current state of the game. I enjoyed it, but it just couldn't hold my interest in the long-term.

I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.

It looks like you are saying you like both games.... and now you want someone else to decide for you which one to play.

I will say only 1 thing. Browse the SWG forums at this site, and you will see that the most anti-SWG posters have ALLL returned to playing SWG currently, as of the past 1-4 weeks.

SWG is first and foremost for players who are first Star Wars fans. Next, IMHO as long as one plays SWG with the intention of NOT trying to be a Jedi, then the game is more fun. Less chance of feeling the grind and burnout.

DAoC is the only MMORPG in which the game DEVs on purpose allow players to skip levels! That's hardcore proof how potientially horrible the grind is and can be. I've played DAoC, and I personally enjoyed the game. I did not skip any levels on purpose, enjoying my journey to getting to the higher levels. The real fun in DAoC begins when one reaches level 48+ (up to the highest level). Then you can engage in what DAoC was intended to be about - full scale PvP. Until you reach the highest levels, you will automatically die from any player who is a few levels higher than you are. No matter if they are naked, not moving, and you take 1 million swings at them. image

If you find a nice group of friends in DAoC, then it increases the fun 1,000 percent!

BOTH games are nice. Both  have positives and negatives. I will not decide for you which one you should play. That's the point of trying out both games for yourself. Both games are successful, so if you want... play DAoC for 3-6 months. Take a break, play SWG for 3-6 months, take a break, go back to DAoC, etc... etc... imageimage

The problem seems to be the qualities you like in SWG are missing in DAOC and vice-versa.  The decision is really which one would you enjoy more of?  In order to make that decision you need to decide what is the most important to you.

As was mentioned DAOC (at least the US version) allows you to skip levels.  This is not because it is so much of a grind (SWG, EQ, EQ2 are far worse as you know), but because the game's main players are older players that have been with the game 1+ years.  So the free levels allows more new players to catch up with the older players as well as allow more casual players to level quicker.

Which is more important to you - 'freedom' or a fun game?  I mean is it more important to you that you can avoid any conflict be a crafter, set up a shop and then be Mayor of your town, or would you like to climb inside the keep and assinate the spellcaster nuking your friends?  Do you want to constantly switch servers to play more than one character?

SWG is a grind.  In fact all SOE games are a grind.  Outside of their customer service grining is probably the number one complaint against them.  That is not going to change.  While DAOC has been slow to change as of late, they are not nearly as bad as SWG.  Think about it, people basically paid to beta test the game.

I hate grinding.  I hate only having one character.  I think there are too many jedi's and it ruins the game.  I think the fact that a blaster can kill a stormtrooper in one shot in the movies but not a mob ruins the feel for the game.  I hate needing to look at a dancing wookie just so I can go back to what I want to do.  I hate that SWG forces me to use other players for unrealistic needs -such as watching a dancer or seeing a doctor after my 'clone' comes into existence.  I hate that there are clones.

Some people see freedom in SWG, I see just a different means of controlling players.

People usualy have fond memories of your first mmorpg.  My suggestion is to look at the www.camelothearld.com to see if you like the upcoming changes.  RvR missions, 3 quickbars, clustering (although not sure if EU will go that way), two free expnasions this year.  Then look at any info you have on SWG and see which one is moving in the direction you want more of.

Personally I would say play DAOC for the next 6 months.  If you are still into it then keep playing it, if you are burnt out then go back to SWG or find another game.

Actualy i play both of those, what i did for a while was a 3 month on one then switch to the other.

If i get tired of either one i will cancle one for a while play the other. Both offerings have there strengths and weaknesses. However i still very much enjoy ml raids in daoc and i am eagerly awaiting up coming smuggler changes in swg.
