Your looking for a fanstasy mmo worth playing and GW2 aint it ? ok i am going to shock you out of your socks, it will take around 10 years before we see any fantasy mmo as good as GW2.
Now go play some other game thats better then GW2 lulz
Hey everyone look, this guy is proclaiming a mmorpg to be the best game moving 10 years forward 3 days after launch. Stop the presses!
Are they hiring for SWTOR though? Rift wasn't a bust. It was a success. And the games you listed were sub based. ANet relies off box sales. Long term profit? That's another discussion. The only thing this thread is dealing with is whether the game is a bust. Coming from another game that I also love, TSW, that's a bust. ANet is happy with their initial sales and swamped because the game is too popular. That doesn't sound like a bust, does it?
Fair enough on BW. And i never said Rift was a failure. It is indeed a sucess.
But, where are you getting that because there's no sub it runs on boxes. You do realize that sub games are B2P2P, right? Warhammer, that i used as an example, was called a sucess by Mythic a sucess with it sold those 1.5 million. So, why is it failing? Failure in long term reveneu.
The way it works is simple. A publishe (NCSoft) gives the developer (Anet) the money to produce the game. So, using boxe sales as a great way to return investment and reveneu, they are sold for any mmorpg. But it is not enough to guarentee a sucess. If GW2 generates profit for NCSOft, it does not mean the game's in the clear. It now needs on-going money, from teh cash shop to produce future content.
Honestly, where do you think the cash for content updates and expansion for other mmorpg came from?
Riders of Rohan? Not from box sales since LOTRO is Freemium.
Trion's huge updates and expansion for Rift, End of Nations and Defience? You're sayign all that came from teh profitable 1 million box sales?
If enough reveneu is made from boxes, then it's invested, but it doesn''t run on it.
Reasons I beleive GW2 will be a failure is because its not as innovative as WoW was when it stole everything good from MMO's. When WoW did it there was 1 other MMO that was even worth playing and that was EverQuest. DAoC had its fan base it just wasnt on the level of EQ. By the time WoW came out, People were ready for something different. Today there are too many mmo's out there. I blame WoW for this.
Only Reason
GW2 will be a bust because its only fun because its the new girl or boy whichever is ur liking. In this world of MMO's we just look for the next one and lie to ourselves that this one is the one. I know this because its happened to myself with TOR and my friends with TERA. Once the newness wears off these threads like mine will become common.
Graphics are good, the world is fresh, the quests are the same, the classes the same. the grind is the same. Only reason to purchase this game I can honestly say is because its free after purchase as long as the servers are still active that is and theoreticly it could possible be worth 60 bucks of entertainment if u put it in scales of taking a family of 4 to the movies.
I wanted to like this game. IM FIENDING for a fantasy MMO thats worth playing. This just isnt it. I compare all fantasy games to Everquest 1 and what seperates EQ from every MMO released is, it was a world you wanted to explore. No one guided you, you played a character in a game and created your own story. I'll save my money stick with Vanguard.
Glad you guys who love the game love it more power to ya. I just wanted a thread so if someone was on the line about purchasing it and didnt buy it yet would have a non bias prespective.Only because of all the glory threads on this forum. Sorry for any typo's im tired and my head hurts.
Your point is mute seeing the game is already deemed a success. Even though copy sold numbers haven't been made public we can safely assume that we are talking copies sold in the millions (several million).
Oddly. The No Trinity thing is a bit of a drawback for many when talking about dungeons. I find the dungeon encounters a little boring myself.
Oddly, I am the exact opposite. The idea of no more trinity and thus elitism in that is what I find intriguing (not saying there won't be elitism - that aways seems to happen).
I wish people would stop comparing the two games. They are night and day although they are both MMO's.
Night and Day? Uhm.... No.
DayZ and WoW is night and day. GW 2 has lot more similarities than differences to WoW.
Same type of structured ThemePark content. I.e. go from bracketed level area to do quests.

Not saying they are the same but they are in the same sub-type where as games like DayZ definitely are not.

Well I can only speak for self but the honeymoon peried was the bwe's for me. The more I play, the more little things I discover and learn, the more I love the game. The game really caters to me though as I perfer an action style combat system and am really digging how I can mix it up with weapons and skills.

So I guess its safe to assume that GW wasn't a success then? How is it they had the money to not only push out multiple expansions but on top of that push out GW2 that pushes the franchise way above its predecessor. I'm sorry but your theories just don't hold the water in the way that you think they do.

Not really structured - you lost that point. I dont have to do any heart quests and just wander around if I want to. WoW is LINEAR - GW2 is not.
Maps - again they just point out the obvious don't they - again I can go where nothing is pointed to on the map if I want and do things there - point lost.
Class and level yes - but if I am a higher level and go into a lower level area - my level scales to that. DIFFERENT so not the same!!!
PvP is not casual in this game so it is a mix. Wnat to be casual - fine - dont want to be fine. SORRY again

Ok so it's not launching in the same environment as WoW launched in.... The quests are the same, but quest delivery is not, classes are actually quite different from the standard due to skill attachment to weapons, the world is awesome and feels like you actually inhabit it, there really is no grind at all (I'm lvl 40+ at this point)..... Really sounds like you never played outside of the starter zone.

Bracketed Level Areas to do "Quests?!?
I haven't played that way at all. I leave an Outpost, pick a direction, and go. Sometimes I'm exploring. Sometimes I help somebody in the area (actual player or NPC).
My friend mentioned a place to find ore in the Asura starting area. I wandered over and got caught up in a big fight against swarms of level 4 monsters in which I helped out but in no way dominated everybody else there... and I was level 21!
tldr: It's only a follow-the-breadcrumbs Hearts/Personal Story/check-items-off-map game if YOU choose to play it that way. And that makes it your problem, not the game's.
Exclamation and question marks above quest givers = WoW's innovations
Wow just made mmo's fun for the masses. I believe this is the same thing GW2 is doing as well. They have stripped down a lot of the boredom and confusing parts of mmo's to make it more accessible and fun. WoW did the same thing when it was released by borrowing many ideas that were already out and just making them better for main stream.
Some people hate this stripping down approach, some people like it. That is the way its going to be.
Overall if you can't look beyond the newness of GW2 and see some unique approaches and the benefits to them, then I don't think anyone can help you see things differently.
So many clowns who haven't even played, yet think they have a clue.Get a grip.
There are so many clowns that have been obsessed with GW2 since it was announced. These clowns have been throwing temper tantrums ever since when someone doesnt share their opinion on this game. They dont have a clue get a grip!

It sounds like your only logical reason for your opinion is that it doesn't feel like EQ1 circa 1999. It seems like this post was more of a doorway for you to rant about nostalgia and not meant to show any rational reasons.
I've got news for you, if you're constantly looking for a game that's going to make you feel like EQ1 did, and tearing every game down that doesn't, you're gonna have a very very miserable MMO life. NO game will ever make you feel like EQ1 did for reasons beyond the game itself. You were put into a wide world in a time where no one even knew what an MMO was. The knife cuts both ways.
BUT, an opinion stated where others KNOW it is not true does tend to push one's buttons.
Please be AT LEAST SOMEWHAT informed on the topic before posting an opinion.
One reason why GW appeared successful and why GW2 will appear to be successful is that the franchise is carried by the other games owned by NCSoft. GW made up 3% of NCSofts profit in 2009 and 1% so far in 2012. Aion, Lineage, and l2 make up most of NCSofts profits allowing the GW franchise to survive.
On its own who knows if Arenanet would be able to survive.
I understand where your coming from OP, but please keep in mind that the genre needs to change. It is very fun to play MMORPG's like WoW and EQ, however this new age of gamers brings in more casuality (totally made that up). It is important for companies to change their approach, look at SWTOR for example. They basically copied WoW and added in VO and a star wars skin, what happened? Their game bombed because there was nothing else there. At least GW2 is trying something a little more unique. I think what A-net is doing is the right approach, we need games that give common goals that promote community.
I know when I play GW2, no matter what I do in the game ... people 99.9% of the time go out of their way to help me if I am having trouble with a DE or skill duel. I can't think of any other game where people go out of their way to help you.

Again because the OP doesn't agree with your views of a video game he has no clue? Pretty much the exact point I was making thank you for helping me make my point.

I think A.Net would be able to survive. Innovation in ideas is usually rewarded. If NCSoft did not buy A.Net one of the others would have. I am happy they weren't bought by EA - GW2 would never had seen the light of day.

Casual - game is definitely designed for the casual gamer (B2P come on that sreams casual)
Maps with clearly marked places to go - yes and no, some things are clearly marked as others appear disappear at random intervals. The so called dynamic content is both a condition and a boon to the overall scheme. For the most part its a boon.
Quest based - yes and no they kinda hide that and give it the appearance your dealing with dynamic content. From my experiences up to level 30 nothing is truly dynamic in the game. Everything becomes predictable and nothing truly gets to a point that it can't be brought back to how it was originally with little effort.
Instanced - for sure every zone is instanced granted they are large but your unable to traverse a entire continent without a loading screen. Warhammer did the same thing where as in WoW you could walk from one end of a continent to the other without a single loading screen.

Don't pull a groin, geez.
Please point out where the OP has a clue.
I think A.Net would be able to survive. Innovation in ideas is usually rewarded. If NCSoft did not buy A.Net one of the others would have. I am happy they weren't bought by EA - GW2 would never had seen the light of day.
lol, not what I said at all but nice try.
