I don't want a WoW killer.

ChiramChiram Member UncommonPosts: 643

You there, Guild Wars 2 fanboy...[insert new game that's out] fanboy. I don't want a game to kill WoW. I don't want a game to kill any MMO. Even though I haven't played wow for the better part of a year, I still have respect for the game... and this is coming from a guy who started his MMO "career" clear back in Ultima Onilne launch.

Some of you new to the scene may not quite understand this concept as of yet. Richard Garriott set out to create ULTIMA ONLINE as a perpetual and CONTINUAL ever expanding online social game. The folks in Verant ( EVERQUEST) seeked to do the same thing. So to ask for an MMO to kill another MMO is not only down right childish but you fail to understand the general concepts behind these games. I want to continue to return to WoW for years to come. Just like I return to UO, EverQuest, EverQuest 2, Guild Wars, GW2 and other games.

Asking for a "death" in MMOs is asking for a death to massive communities, a disconnect of virtual and real friendships and employment in the real world. So just because you jump the flavor of the month MMO bandwagon doesn't mean the rest have to follow suite and it also doesn't mean  your previous MMO needs to "be killed". :)

I don't want or more precisely don't care about WoW killer because if there would be any game that would 'kill' WoW and took over it playerbase - it would almost certainly be a game that would offer gameplay I would not like.  Simply because it seems my preferences and most current WoW playerbase preferences are not similar.

I would only care about what impact that game would have on whole mmorpg market because that actually could affect some game I like or what kind of games will come in future.

No Wow does not need to be "killed".

But what needs to be killed is the idea that Wow is the only MMO and that any studio that just copy it with slightly better graphics will earn plenty of money.

The MMO genre needs a few different games at the top so silly investors dont believe that a MMO must be in a particular way.

I think that is the real problem here, MMOs need to differ from eachother but the investors just see Wow and asks the devs to do a similar game since they think the next similar game will make as much money.

With 4 large and different games they would realize that diversety is good and maybe let the devs make their game instead of Blizzards.

    Thats my 5 cents anyways.

There's too much epicaricacy amongst the MMO crowd.  People like seeing things crash and burn, I bet people would pay thousands to watch something destroy WoW.  I bet there are people who take enjoyment out of the fact that GW2 is having problems at the moment.  It's just how some people are.

Yeah I liked WoW well enough.  I don't think it's nearly the quality game it used to be, but I can't fault it for the years of entertainment it gave me.  Even though I don't respect Blizzard, WoW gives a lot of people a good time...

I don't want a WoW killer. I just want a new top dog. I think gw2 has that potential.

We dont want wow to be killed we want blizzard to stop exist.

They milked enough money with this outdated game that they keep updating.

Not only that but after so much milking they should had release a new mmo and give wow for free to all players with cash shop just like gw 2.

But who cares we have gw2 now without the intentions of milking blizzard,

I can agree with what you're saying OP, the death of any MMO is equal to loss of jobs, loss of friends, people losing out on something they purchased, hard work etc. It's not a thing to wish upon any game.

Yet when themepark games die, their life is measured. Take SWTOR, it is dying as we speak. Dying a loud and angry death, it will soon wink out of existence. We measure its success, its rise and fall. We see that with the death of such an MMO, comes realization for a company like EA. Perhaps this model no longer works? Perhaps it's time to change things up a little bit and create something new.

World of Warcraft created stagnation, it created a halt on unique ideas, and blizzard themselves settled into a comfortable state of releasing expansions packs without opposition. Without any opposition their ideas became less ambitious. Since Guild Wars 2 has released, WoW has timed it with some more significant changes to the game, no doubt to counter those who leave for the seriously over hyped GW2.

The more themeparks that die, the more chance we have that the next big name developer will finally shake things up and really begin to add new and unique features breaking away from the model. Unfortunately this hasn't been the case since SWTOR began it's epic spiral of death, TESO one would think would consider changing their features list to really pull in some tired and bored gamers but they are almost copying the usual model to the letter, a shock considering the roots of their IP...

You are the perfect example of the type of person the OP is describing. What kind of freakish individual would want to see the demise of a successful company and the loss of thousands of jobs? And what about the 10's of millions of people that enjoy World of Warcraft (past and present)? Without Blizzard there is no WoW. I guess you don't care about any of that. You just want to screw all those people over just so your game will "win." Way to go champ.

Pathetic. You and people like you.

It goes back to the old school days of gaming. Where you could buy a sega, nintendo or a genesis/super nintendo and 95% of the games would have a unique style, unique to that system and unique to the passionate design team. You are right we need some variety, while some "copying" is ok to a degree an end user shouldn't feel like they already played a new release just because the game seems to be copied over so much.

The general problem is this. We have publishers with money but limits passion of design due to corporate structure OR we have weak investment firms/angel investors but passion driven game design with limited funds who don't have the financial glue to make it stick.

What we need is a rich publisher backing a very passionate lead design team and artists who ignores the corporate structure to make something redifining. The odds are small but it can happen.

    ^Spot on

In fact, this is why we don't want any new game to kill WoW - because every new game would then copy that wow-killer.

We want enough different games in the space that there is no obvious go-to get-rich design. That's why I'm glad EvE exists, even though I don't PvP.

In reality it really is a joke term. That's like saying...."Ohh look at this new operating system....its going to be a Microsoft killer". Fact is Blizzard is the Microsoft of MMOs, just like Facebook is now the Microsoft of Social Media. Everyone hates them but no matter what they are too big to fall. When you have unlimited money there really isnt a way to be beaten...all you have to do is take a good idea from someone else and make it better which is what WoW does very well. Like Facebook also....Oh hey, Instagram was getting big and popular then BAM, Facebook buys them.

Just to be clear, WoW didn't create stagnation - it was everyone trying to copy WoW that did it. WoW was actually innovative in it's heyday.

I'd argue that you don't want another top dog, because that will simply become the game that everyone unsuccessfully copies. Even if you love GW2, will you love a dozen crappy clones of it? We need a variety of games to succeed, and frankly the multi-mullion sub model needs to go.

Good point, but then again I'd rather there be copies of something new than a game from 2004... if I had to choose.  As proven by all the WoW clones, it seems like companies don't want to take a risk doing something original for fear it might fail for confusing people or alienating MMO fans that can't break away from conventions, ie: raiding.

Be careful what you wish for. We could have a series of gw2 'clones' in the years to come..

Still playing WoW, started back in Vanilla. Its had its dips and turns but overall its a great experience.  Even though I haven't logged in since GW2 came out WoW being killed and all that time I've put into my hunter, would make me rather depressed.  No need to bury the past when looking at the future.

Well I hope theres always some kind of WoW killer wannabe around. Keeps these awful WoW kiddies from playing the MMOs I'm playing.

For the record - if GW2 is just another failure like most recently SWTOR, dont call me surprised.

I couldn't agree with this more, and i could be considered a giddy fanboy for anything related to the world of Tyria.  Unplugging communities, recently seen with the imminent doom of CoH, is terrible and sucks joy from what it is we do in our free time, which is play these games.  I will say that a lot of people may not neccessarily want a "WoW Killer" (god i hate that term), but actually just despise the company Blizzard, either for what it stands for or more appropriately, what it used to stand for.  Some folks may feel slighted by a company and,  given the power people can feel behind a keyboard (much like Road Rage), can get way out of hand with the way they feel about these kind of ideas.

Get enough of those ideas in one room and they grow out of control like cancer, and you see every message board and trade chat from here, to WoW, to every MMO around.  It's a viscious problem that unfortunately will never go away.  Luckily the chat in GW2 is nice atm, but i don't expect that to last long.

My point exactly. It sucks to lose such a large community. I  heard there is a petition being signed to keep it up and running.
