Maybe I'm just a cynical jerk, but I've found the dialogues to be far from comical, even the ones that try to be (looking at you, asura). They're on par with Disney Channel jokes on the cringeworthy scale. It's almost like ANET was trying to capture the 12 y/o prepubescent teen demographic with their storylines.

Eh. I'm not even sure I blame the dialog writers so much as the actors and actresses. I had a feeling when that somewhat overrated chick from the Guild was doing the voice of one of the main characters, they didn't exactly have the highest standards. To me, the dialog and voice outside in the world such as combat voiceovers and chatter between NPCs, was a lot more convincing and cool than two people told that they were to act as serious as possible for a story sequence. I dunno, the whole thing is hit or miss in my opinion.

I agree that they did a way better job on the ambient dialogue than the lines in the cut scenes, they are poorly done compares to SWTOR, TSW and hell even GW1.
I totaly agree with op's view on the cutscenes. They are mediocre at best. I have seem many here on the forum that have been critical about TSW because their character dont speak, and appears as a severe case of mute protagonist syndrome. But i have to say, one of my characters in GW2 is an Charr, and i realy feel his voice is terrible, donsn't sound anything like me at all, and i think the Charr wierd voice makes me feel disconected to my character. I also think the NPC's are flat and boring, atleast compared to TSW. At first i thought that it was a bit wierd that my character in TSW was mute, but after playing GW2 i think that having a character without a voice isnt such a bad idea after all. The overall writing in GW2 isnt especially good i think, but for PVP it is a pretty good game, but not as good as the hype said it would be.
I actually like to know whats going on,so no...I watch every cutsecene and listen to every word.
Im in no rush,I like to sit back and enjoy my MMO's like sipping a fine wine or a cold beer..
good day.

I see nothing but people skipping al story because people still play games like mmo's instead playing it like MMORPG (you know...where the story used to be part of the game).
I realy like following the story of my character, i loved it in SWTOR too....i like it in GW2 also.
If you dont want to watch it then just skipp them but imho you are missing out on one of the most exciting parts of an MMORPG....the story itself.
Thats the reason people just blow trough the content in a very short time.....then they bitch there aint enough content.
Play pong......it has no story and the content never ends.....
ps: yes pong is the mother of all games......everything else is a pong clone....lolz.
Excuse me but I'm not impressed. Dialogue itself is okay but... I played a forum-based VtM RPG once and we had loads of such stuff in every post. We were actually investigating a haunted hause too so I can almost directly compare. Pretty much the same languagle and style except we didn't try to sell it.
And why does the guy look gay? Or is he? And why is animation so unnatural? I know it's bad form to bash animation since it's almost never perfect but really, this must be one of the worst examples I've seen since 90's. It reminds me of Baldur's Gate intro.
MMORPG genre is dead. Long live MMOCS (Massively Multiplayer Online Cash Shop).

I agree it's more the delievery of the dialogue then the actual writing. Felicia Day's, 'performance', for that DLC for Dragon Age II was pretty lacklustre as well. Some actors need a lot of direction for this sort of work, it's difficult for them to convey everything just using their voice. I get the feeling noone bothered at ANET, as IMO most of the voice acting is quite flat.
As for the storylines ANET has gone for a classic high fantasy setting, so your really not going to get any shades of gray here. Although I did find some intriguing choices there wasn't any consequences to most of them, (the beggars human story springs to mind), which makes it difficult to fully engage with.
Saying that I do listen to them all, it's not superduper original or atmospheric but I do like to know whats going on

Yes you may watch them, but the problem is you watch them and feeling you got joked or something. I prever watching "godfather" then watching "dragonball evolution". Just a compare how i feel about the gw2 cutscenes hehe
To the OP, what i found most problematic in the story was actually the voice acting and dialogue. I didn't feel right IMO. Not just in the instances, but in the overall world. Some are good, but many times it feels weird and disconnected.
The stories themselves, from what i saw in beta, where standart. Nothing great, but not completly horrible.
Originally posted by Connmacart Sorry but the TSW cutscenes were horrible un my opinion. I found the animation in most cuscenes to be extremely bad. Yet in GW2 I have no problems watching them. So no I don't have your problem. Quite the opposite.

The sign of a fanboy if i ever saw one. I played TWS for almost 2 months , now i play and enjoy GW2 as i prefer GW2 but this...this comment ....
Every cutscene/dialouge scene in TWS is perfectly mo-capped. You cannot even say "but it is his taste" really you cant. God i hate fangirls.
I am exactly the other way round concerning cut scenes.
TSW: boring crap where your character stands around like a f*ng statue. Half the time it had nothing at all to do with the actual task at hand. Sometime it was funny or a good VO, but the Xth person that started with "You know, it wasn't always like this.." got me to skip everything else.
GW2: great story telling mechanic. To the point, it's there where it needs to be and absent when it's not. Because it's limited in GW2, it enhances the experience, while where you have cut scenes all the time, it just slows down the game. Perfect balance, if you ask me.
I just wanted to get sure, that it is not only me instant clicking away the GW2 cutscenes.
After i did all quests + watching their cutscenes in TSW, i just can't get into the GW2 cutscenes, I guess im just spoilt but the tsw stories.
I mean don't get me wrong, but I really tried to watch a few of them, but it all came to the same solution -> Boring and undwieldy.
Others i was asking ingame was like happy about every cutscenes, their previous game was kind of wow or stuff.
Anyone else having my problem?
I skip Voiceover scenes. The ones in GW1 and GW2 are nowhere near as painful as the multitude there were in SWTOR (Skipped those too). I just feel it's a waste of my playtime to have to sit through cutscenes. It's just not my thing, I'd rather spend my time leveling up and pvp'ing.
1) The story writing from what i've seen (untill level 18/20'ish) is plain horrible. The 'this is my legend' crap is terrible haha.
2) The cutscene's itself are well done tbh. I enjoy watching them simply because the animation is fluid. I am here watching and hoping the writing get's better so i can really ENJOY the cutscene's at later levels
Well I like GW2, but in all honesty declaring GW2 cuscenes are better then the ones The Secret World's is ridiculus. TSW has it's problems the combat animations are an ugly one, but the overall quality of cutscenes is far superior compared to Guild Wars 2, maily due to good writing and awesome voice actors throughout. The animations, while sometimes a bit minimalistic in the cutscenes are certainly not worse than the basic gestures in the GW2 ones. The debatable thing is the muteness of the characters, it helps immersion in my opinion, since you are not forces to listen to a voice that is not fitting to your character.

let me get this right..you say the animations are bad in TSW,and your playing gw2.what planet you on.first off.to put it bluntly..the story is shit in gw2 compared to TSW.i love gw2 but ffs get real.
The less story in my MMO the better. I should be the story, me playing my character is my characters story not some pre defined grabage that get's shoved down my throat.
All this story crap gets on my nerves now "THIS IS YOUR STORY" then its go here, do this, go here, do this, go here, do this. You can't stray from it at all.
MMO's for me are about being part of an online world not having a story told to me through subpar writing and acting.
Th only thing dissapoiting about the story fwas it has ruined the third part of the book ' Edge of Destiny' for me. I had reached the third part recently before the game released and i hit 50+ and bamm they start talking about Glint and what happens ! I didnt want to skip it and forced my self to listen. I havnt done story part post that .. reached 63 yeaterday. have no time to finish the last part of the book as i am always playing in my free time Stuck between a rock and a hard place there.
Story is good or bad is a personal and subjective thing it doesnt even warrant a discussion. I have read the Ghost of Ascalon and thats the only dungeon i have done. Story told to me in the dungeon with those cutscenes were awesome as i knew the whole backstory behind it ... and to see it in person and to be in the catacombs and to see the king Adelbern himself was great as well. The story is very intriguing for me as i havnt played GW1. The lore is new to me except the fact i have read Ghost of Ascalon and 3/4 of Edge of Destiny. Snaff was my favorite character and hence i have rolled an Asura. To be a Snaff Savant feels great to me but could be an insta skip for some one else. Also i choose to be in the order of the whisperers, as Ghost of Ascalon explains the Vigil very well. I wanted to know about the other 2, and since this is my first play through i choose to skip priory for now.
Regarding their cutscenes as a tech, i can see they wanted to continue their painterly artstyle in there too. They went more for a Comic strp + a few CGI cutscenes + in game world dialogues (here i have some issues as at times character doesnt face yours). And comparing it to TSW and SWTOR is also unwarranted. I havnt played TSW past lvl 15 so i wont comment on it. But swtor i played and completed my story line there too. There too i was aware of the Lore so made it feel epic. Cutscenes were done very well too and voice acting was good as well. But the fact that bioware was doing it to begin with and it being good was not a suprise to me but the fact that they spent sooooo much money on it, that they couldnt do any thing else with the game was dissapointing. I see Gw2 has kept a good balance, and i can appreciate it.

Two Char's standing side by side
I prefer to call them cut's because there is not much scene in them
Easy to get used to. It's a trade-off, of course, but in exchange we get some nice personal story variety. Good enough for me.
