... that the "compromised fansite", albeit not strictly speaking a "fansite" for gw2, but truly a "fansite" of mmo's in general, is mmorpg.com?
Doesn't it seem alot of the "hacked" people respond/reply here? Even people reply here about phishing emails who don't even own GW2. Does mmorpg.com have any obligation to inform us if they were "compromised"? How would we go about finding out?

I didn't get hacked, but here are A list of major MMO forums/communities that could have been. Reddit,GW2Guru, and /v/.
Not saying my account is super great or anything, but anythings possible.

/v/ ? People don't post email there. Getting thousands of peoples' email addys through their IPs would be... I don't think that's it.
Reddit I suppose, also facebook.
Not those who's email/passwords were not the same.

You wouldn't "be hacked". You might have received emails filtered by spam guards and never saw them. You also likely use a different email addy for gw2 than mmorpg.com.
Ummm i say NOPE.
I would be the first to chime in if i tohught it was,but i am like 90% positive it is not.
I will tell you how it really works in these cases.
Quite often ,not all but a lot of sites sell emals/information to advertising sites.Look no further than Facebook one of the most corrupt otulets to ever hit the internet. The FBI uses it ok,enough said about FB.
No where the problem lies is that RMT can setup a fan site to get the information from a developer or any one else that has personal information. This is not new it goes WAY back to the days of AOL,they used to sell blocks of 10,000 emails to advertisers.
To make a long story short, fan sites disguised as fansites can utilize personal information in a harmful way.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
As said before, if a hacked fansite leads to you losing control of your account, you should be looking at your password management and your local system for infection by malware via one of the million possible ways.
With the way things are, the fansite wouldn't even need to be hacked. With a very public issue with current versions of java, all it would take is the fansite to use third party ads and someone to use some injection to exploit that vector of attack or abuse "data" URLs.
I don't presume to know and I don't play GW2. All I'm saying is, you should be considering all options.
Think of how many MMO accounts have been compromised over the years. Now consider how many people use the exact same login and password for other MMOs and GW2.
The "hackers" already had all of your information before you even made your GW2 account. That's why it was such an easy job.
