Lets face it. When I first tried EQ2, I was waste-deep in WoW and never gave it a proper chance.
So, now that the "Addiction" has subsided to being able to log in and have fun, but not being able to play it for weeks on end, it is time to give WoW's only real competitor, EQ2, a second shot. The idea is to play both of these two games at the same time and still have fun.
Anyways, I have a few questions regarding the game before jumping back in.
Number one. Maybe I didn't like the server (perma or everfrost...one of those two) Any suggestions for one with a great community?
I hate the tier class structure for this reason: If I spend 2 weeks building a character to 20 I don't want to end up hating him and have to re-roll a new character, so number 2: I'd appreciate it if you guys would explain some classes. Namely, Necromancer, Templar, Monk, and Wizard. Specifically what are they like, How is your experience with them, are they fast paced and/or complex characters?
Number 3. Just some usefull tips to help get started again would be appreciated.
If any of these questions can be/have been answered elsewhere, on another site, or perhaps this one, you can post a link to that page also if you think it will help....
Thanks for the help and if you want to rub it in that I constantly flamed the game, feel free. I always enjoyed useless banter, just don't start flame wars.....yeah.

#1. Ive never had any problems on Blackburrow, you may want to try that.
#2. Necromancer: summons evil spirits and uses them to kill their foes. similar to conjurors but in my experience they do more damage. they are freeport only where conjurors are qeynos only.
Templar: templars use primarily reactive heals. this means that they put something on you that automatically heals you for an amount whenever you take damage. this is different from druid classes (fury and warden) who use heal-over-times and shaman classes (mystic and defiler) who ward people or prevent them from taking damage in the first place. templars (qeynos)/inquisitors (freeport) are also the only healers that can wear heavy armor.
Monk: basically a martial arts master. they are high in agility and use their hands or staffs to wip out some kick-ass kung-fu moves that do a lot of damage. if you dont have a proper tank class in your group a monk CAN tank (they dont have much armor but they have agility so they just dont get hit as much) BUT you'll need good healers. monks are qeynos only where bruisers are the freeport equivalent.
Wizard: can be either qeynos or freeport. they do a SIGNIFIGANT amount of dps. they mainly do direct damage, whereas warlocks do damage over time mainly. wizards are generally more useful in normal 6-man groups because then can really bring down pain on enemies, but they also inhale power. warlocks are generally sought after more during raids however (not to say wizzies are bad for raids) because locks use less power and theyre damage takes a lot of time to accumilate but is actually higher over time than with wizzies. so if ur gonna be a wizzie, make sure you always have good drink. i love my wizzie, its just fun to go and nuke the hell out of stuff.
i recommend looking at the guides and skill lists on eq2players.com for the classes you are looking at and seeing what you may like.
#3. go into the game with an open mind. dont get frusterated if it seems boring at first, because grouping doesnt really start till lvl 12 and thats where the fun (IMO anyways) is all at. be social. try crafting see if you like it. do quests, and just have fun. dont worry about leveling too much and just sit back and enjoy the ride. ive been doing it for 32 levels and im still having a blast.
but most important of all:
JOIN A GUILD!
i cant stress that enough. being in a great guild makes the game infinitely more fun.
hope that helps, good luck in eq2!

I've never heard the term reaction heal. Does that mean every time they are struck they generate health for the player that was hit?
Are they (templars/inquisitor) sort of like a paladin if you will, (not the EQ2 paladin, but paladins in general) where they are half-tank half-healer or am I missing something?
Is there a difference between the good/evil varients? IE, despite a few obvious things (I don't see a conjuror draining life...or do I?), how would a conjuror be different from a necromancer, or monk/bruiser templar/inquisitor? (for instance)
Is there a complex guide that has in-depth detail of the classes so I don't have to badger the forum-goers with these questions?
Why do questions answered always spawn more questions to be asked?
(looks into EQ2players.com)
Thanks for the reply, also.
Templars/Inquisitors are Clerics. We wear heavy armor but we aren't tanks, we just handle more hits than other healer classes (I'm an Inquisitor btw).
Yep. Reactive heals restore health to the person that the spell is cast on whenever he is hit. These are our main heals but we also have major direct heals, minor direct heals, group heals, and group reactives.
While Templars and Inquisitors both use reactive heals there are differences between the two. Templars focus more on buffing while Inquisitors focus more on debuffing. Templars deal damage using direct damage nukes, Inquisitors use damage over time. Also Inquisitors get stifle (keeps opponents from casting, can't use it on the big raid mobs though). Other classes get it too but I'm pretty sure ours is the best.
I can't give you the run down for the other classes because I don't know much about them, but you get the idea. Here's a link to each class's spell list if you want to read through it.
http://eq2players.station.sony.com/en/classes/guide.vm?classId=13&id=20
so is the paladin/shadow knight the only "true" half tank half healer? Or is there another class? How about battlemage? Or would that be the shadowknight whilst the paladin is the healer varient?
I guess I'm still stuck in the templar as being a holy warrior much like the paladin only filled with a more firey zeal to slay all who get in their path and an unending hatred of all things undead...(See shadowbane)
Thanks for your help, again. (are they at least savvy with a weapon or do they just have the armour to look good)
yes paladins are the only healer tanks and shadowknights really the only battlemages. about templars however, i think they are the most combar oriented and solo-friendly of the healer classes. they can use swords maces and hammers too.

I have a 25 Templar and I got bored with it. They are fairly decent, the heals help make you a fair soloer. But in groups you're going to pretty much just be healing (maybe slapping on a few debuffs here and there). The thing I didn't like was that the healing in groups felt like button mashing. Of course, maybe my groups pulled faster than they should have been.
Overall though, Templars are very powerful against undead. Especially if you select the right traits or whatever. They are coveted healers, can ressurect group members, and they are typically desired and needed in groups. If you need to put together a group to finish a couple quests quick, it's always easier when you know you've always got a healer. There are definitely benefits.
I currently have a 28 Necro that I now play as my main. I like it a lot more. Seems more varied to me, and I solo most of the time.
I can tap the life of my pet for mana, I can stun mobs, I can root mobs, I can dot, I can sorta nuke, and I have a couple nice debuffs for groups. Later (much later), Necros can ressurect at like 41 I think. Oh yeah, I can heal my pet too.
I can't get groups quite as easily, but I do very good damage. Very good damage. And I can handle a lot more solo than I could as a Templar. More powerful creatures, and more of them. With my pet, it's also easier to get away from even the stickiest of situations, so I have died less.
Be warned if you choose necro though. Necros go through some very tough times in the 20s. We get all kinds of support spell updates but our real disease damage spells, dots, and good pets don't even start to come till the very late 20s. Early 30s is where most necros have said the real "Necro" part of it starts to roll in. At that point I think you have a choice between 3 different pet classes, Assassin, Fighter, and Wizard. I'm just finishing up the hard boring part of being a necro, so hopefully in the next few weeks it will get more fun again. Even though the late 20s have been a bit rough, I still love my necro.
Habit is not to be flung out the window by any man, but coaxed down the stairs one step at a time. - Mark Twain
Can templars really use Swords? (considers trying this class though rues needing to re-roll if hating it)
Thanks for all your replies thus far. Keep em coming.
If you want to play a lot in groups and want to find groups fast, then be a healer. Helaers are always needed:)
Nekros are pretty fun to play, though they are not that important class like tanks, healers and nukers. As a Nekro though u will have quite good and powerfull chain/group spells that are usually pretty good DOTS. Also Necro has some real cool spells and pets. Ive seen a lvl 34 nekro and he was able tu summon dead/rotten dogs...looked nasty.
Hmm, I'm sorry to blow your bubble but Templars can't use swords... I played a Templar till lvl 33 before i reroll to a Mystic and unless i'm dumb.. i couldn't equip anything but a large variety of maces and staffs i think.
I might be wrong but i'm sure at 99.9% they can't use swords...

Thats actually what I was thinking (after consulting the main website),
What are wardens/mystics like?
Thats actually what I was thinking (after consulting the main website),
What are wardens/mystics like?
Hi OnyxBMW,
Templars/Inq are raw healings. They use reactive heals (most of the time) wich mean that if you cast a reactive heal on someone and that person get hit by a monster, it will trigger a heal. They also have great buffs and very limited debuffs.
----
Mystics/Defiler are like shamans in EQ 1 (if you played) They used debuffs and slow to weaken its oponents. Also they use a different approach to heal, they use wards. Wards are like a shield that you cast on a friend and it absorb the damage. So as long as the ward is on, your tank shouldn't take any damage if you keep it on. Mystics also have some directs heals and very good buffs.
- I play a Mystic atm and i love it. Our debuffs and slows really make a big difference too. Debuffs = The win!
----
Wardens/Fury work a bit differently. I haven't played yet but it look pretty simple. So far what i know is they make great healers too. They use heals over time and direct healings. Here it's important not to confuse the Heals over time and Reactive heals... Heal over time mean that at every 5 secondes (a tick) a heal will automaticly heal its target even if the person is not getting beaten on. They also have some buffs.
---
So basicly, all healers are great. They all do the job but differently. Templar/Inquisitor also can use plate but not the other healers...
Hope it helps

Ok. Now that I'm out of the IoR and getting started on the mainland. Do you think any of you people can help me get started out (with suggestions!!!)
Last time when I was knee-deep in WoW the transition from IoR to mianland is probably what killed me since I was probably too lost to figure out much anything...
A few new questions:
1) Some tips for leveling (focus arround level 10-15)
2) Is there anywhere to find a map. Getting lost in the catacombs or the peat bog is a traumatic event especially when you try to recover a corpse only to realize after you get near it you're going to die again.
3) Any other helpful suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
ok what class did you chose and what server are you on? i might be able to get on my alt and help ya out a bit depending on your server (or ill just make a new char....i can get a char to 10 in an hour or 2 now lol)
ok onto ur questions:
1. tips for leveling. here's what i have experienced so far and it seems to work pretty well:
6-9: Peat Bog or Oakmist Forest
10-15: Lowbie Scarecrow groups in Antonica
16-20/21: Higher level Scarecrows near Steppes Station in Antonica
20-22: Undead near Entrance of Thundering Steppes or lower level Centaurs (WARNING: although Centaurs start out neutral killing just one Centaur will make you KOS to all)
23-25: Giants in Thunderring Steppes
26-30/31: The Ruins of Varsoon or continuing with Giants in Thundering Steppes
30-39(?): Enchanted Lands or Runnyeye Citadel
Keep in mind, if you are a tank class you may have a hard time getting a group in those areas if you are the lowest suggested class. for instance, i couldnt get a group as my paladin in Varsoons until lvl 28 but my wizzie got one easily at 26.
2.
yes theres a great map site over
here as well as if you go to EQ2Interface.com there's a MOD that actual adds maps to some areas to your in-game map (its what I have). you can find the mod here.
3. just have fun and don't worry too much about hard core leveling. also, dont be afraid to ask questions but try to look fdr stuff yourself first before you do.....that is unless you want some nasty tells. (ie dont ask where gnolls are in antonica, because if u go out north qeynos gate and take 10 steps to the left they are there.)
have fun in eq2!
also, like i said tell me your name/class/server and ill see if i can come help you out

Currently I'm working on a cleric for a templar who is 10 right now (Cale) and a fighter (6, working on his tradeskills a bit before hitting the mainland) who's going monk (Kaeden).
Both of those are on blackburrow. (only mildly-yet-not-overly populated server with a name I liked :P)
I might be on later today and should tomorrow so just send me a tell to either of em if when you get the time.
Anyone know if theres a site that states which classes are restrictive to good or evil allignments?

You're right Otto, not much competition. We get loads of content and super stable servers.
Templars are nice
It fits my mold perfectly
I have a ShadowKnight, but I could hardly solo with that. I tired Necro (was my original choice before the game even came out) and I just didn't like the combat spells.....for almost 30 lvls I felt like the "other guy." I tried Assassin (I liked it for covert Ops....but if I needed to fight something I could do so but many times it was tough to solo a hard mob)
Templar was perfect for me. I will always be wanted in a group, they are nothing like FFXI WHMs as you can wear heavy armor and Vanguard armor, and weild Hammers, maces, morning stars, bo staves, and regular staves as well as great hammers and great maces....anything that crushes you can use.
Also, I can solo up to 3 to 4 lvls higher than myself. Not only does my XP go up a lot faster, but the drops are nice as they are drops typically for a hero a couple lvls above you (and If you're in your late 20's....that's some nice loot money)
Also, the downtime isn't too bad. Just buy some nice drink and you'll be fine. I dont really use food as I am a priest and never have to worry about the life meter as I do the manna meter.
But, it's all how you see it. Some people tried other professions after trying templar and realized they like their newer professions more and vice versa. Just try it out and see for yourself.
Also...a really nice thing about the Templar is Water respite. I spent 30 minutes in Thunderin Steppes underwater exploring. With Watery Respite you grow gills AND can swim as if you are running on land. I found stuff 200 feet below sea level that just simply amazed me.

GASP! someone who works at the site actually responded to my post...
Gasp! Again!...3 pages! Two firsts!
Yeah, so far my cleric is at the 14th level (As I said I play WoW as well as this) and I'm trying other classes. Gave up on necromancer (I never liked classes with a pet but they just seemed cool...no dice)
Currently I have the 14.5 human cleric, a 10 DE sorceror who I plan on betraying (read up on the quest, makes me feel like I'll gain 220% xp over 17 just finishing it) and a wood elf brawler going monk...something like 8...really low...
As of right now I can sorta see myself playing both of these games...*shrug*
thanks for the replies.
Good idea with playing both Onyx. Really helps both games seem fresh.
En1gma, quiet u! If u tell everyone clerics are easy to solo 3-4 levels above you everyone will make one and then SOE will nerf us...
To all others, clerics are realy hard (and boring) to play, we have trouble soloing level 10 rats at level 20, so forget about that. We can only wear bikinis and thongs, no plate vanguard medium or even light armor! When we fight mobs they call us names and throw tomatoes at us, so we clerics have to buy new armor sets every hour or so (cost about 5 gold). Clerics also tend to miss alot and hit their allies instead of enemies. So yeah, clerics are bad, dont play them.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holodomor - pre-WW2 genocide.
Despite the fact that that is true, I have found that in most worlds as you get higher in level as the female of the species the armour seems to be getting smaller, and smaller, and smaller.
I never knew that a piece of armour that barely covered what our grand government has deemed to be "inappropriate" for viewing by anyone under the age of 21/18 would actually protect better than armour that actually protected things vital to your success in life, IE legs for movement, arms for killing things and mid-section to connect the two.
I suppose stranger things have happened.
Good luck with the Templar. Healing classes are boring.
I deleted my shaman and started a new healing class. (Because I'm a glutton for punishment)
If you wanna have fun in the game, go with a damage dealing class. If you like the healer lifestyle, and wanna think your a tank sure try Templar. But like someone said, healing becomes button mashing. I only play healing classes because I like to help people. EQII takes away a lot of my helping ability by not letting me heal un-grouped people. Thats retarded, I like to run by people and toss a heal on them or a buff on them and be on my way, but I can't do that in this game, and it's a bit of an erk.
Other than that, WB to EQII, I would suggest playing our old characters on your old server, becasue they probably have 100% vitality, which is 2x exp gain. New characters don't start with any vitality, but vitality is gained at 1% every RW hour. But good luck anyway.
