well, i DID it! i took the advise of all those on mmorpg.com that have been saying that it is not worth paying subscriptions anymore. seems that most were saying, or voting, that they would no longer pay subs since they didn't feel like the new ones out were worth it or because it has been shown that decent ones can be designed and not require a sub. i just cancelled 2 of them: EVE and SWTOR.
now i need to find a f2p mmorpg that will be fun and last a while. any suggestions are welcome!
this will be kinda scary while i am in the market for one but, at least i have until october to finish off my paid subs (eve and swtor). i FEAR the withdrawals!
wish me luck,
sz

I don't think you are going to find a replacement for EVE. SWTOR will probably be F2P soon after your sub ends.
LOTRO, DDO, EQ2 and AoC are all worth trying. I have issues with all of their paid content but that's a different topic.
Just buy PLEX with ISK in EVE, that way it's pretty much F2P.
That advice aside, good for you! There's very little reason for any company to charge a subscription fee in this day and age, and most games aren't worth it. There are exceptions, however.
DCUO is the best and most innovative MMORPG worth playing atm. You can access it for free and pay only for DLC content (if you choose to), which cost $10 on every 4+ months, which is the best value you can get out of any MMORPG out there.
The combat is one of the best and just being part of the superhero universe is a blast. The feats(achivements) which you can do when not raiding actually progress your chr with more dmg/healing etc and forgot to add that it is the only MMORPG that has the trinity system (tank/heal/dps) + controller, which is another great innovation.
The graphics are awesome and the fact you can collect iconic and rare styles that you can use and make your superhero unique is just further evidence of the game inovation. The fact server is full (I get now 1-5 queue when logging on USPC) is showing just how popular the game is.
Sorry but DCUO is crap. Horrid controls. Also what are you smoking? Only MMORPG that has the trinity system? You need to get out more. Most MMOs still have the trinity system.
I do agree with what others said about Plex for Eve.
Good for you SWTOR is going to be F2P very soon!
Build up some withdrawals now so it's more fun to go back :P Also planet side 2 coming soon, and hopefully Firefall sometime soon too. Oh and Neverwinter is supposed to be releas... No wait, it got puched to 2013.
There's a recently released subless new themepark mmorpg also but I'm afraid to mention it since it would propably attract a bunch of people ready to stomp me to ground for even mentioning it
Can't argue with this.
DCUO is just a failed P2P game, tbh i had pretty much forgot it existed, hard to pin innovative on any factor of DCUO either really, SOE took a gamble making it F2P, yet to see if it paid off, personally i'd take a gamble on GW2 .. its more likely to be a fun game.. and im guessing that the microtransactions in GW2 are far less intrusive
Yup. Its worth it even if you are only moderately interested. The value/cost is too great.

If you were subbed to those two games, you probably like science fiction MMOs, right? If that's the case, sadly you don't have too many options right now.
Star Trek Online is FTP, but it's what I'd say an acquired taste. It's at least a bit different, though; especially when you're in space it doesn't feel like playing any other MMO.
I did like my days in Fallen Earth, though it was quite rough around the edges, and it's been quite a while since I checked back there. See if you like that.
Of course, Planetside 2 is in beta, if you're into FPSs you might try to get into that right now.
If you're OK with fantasy, I'd say the just-launched GW2 is a really solid non-sub option. Though you still have to buy the box, of course.
Also, Vanguard has just gone F2P. It's what I'd call an "old school" MMO, and a good one at that, though I hear it's been having some tech problems in the conversion process... no?
Among other "relegated to F2P status" games, AOC, LOTRO and EQ2 are some good options.
Also, SWTOR is easy to quit, not the least because it's going F2P anyway, but that EVE withdrawal may pose problems. :P A very hard game to replace, that one.
That advice regarding Eve is exceptionally stupid and short sighted. You have to invest a lot to get to the point where you can earn that much for it to be free. If it was actually that easy EVE would already be shut down due to lack of subs.
I find 0 problem with the controls, so must be the player. I will start getting out more when you will learn to read. "Only MMORPG that has the trinity system + controller role"
EVE is a sinkin ship. It's a dying MMORPG, cuz its a niche market and a lot out there want to develop and be a character, not a ship. Many have said that combat is very boring, slow and dull. It also discourages new players since skill gain is passive, not to mention the fact that it's P2P and you must shell out good $ before u can start farming that good amount of isk just to see it gone to curve that sub fee.
At the end it's almost a decade old MMORPG, where only the old veterans are stuck in it cuz they don't want to give up easily on all of their passive skill they've accumulated over all those years that cost them a lot of $.
Doesn't EVE have 300,000+ subs or something? That doesn't seem too bad considering a lot of MMOs released these days can barely maintain 100,000. It's even more impressive when you consider the thing released back in 2003/4, and with World of Warcraft dominating the market for so long.
P.S. never played the game btw, so no, I don't know what the gameplay or the quality is like, but apparently, quite a few people enjoy it for one reason or another.
Ha..............This one never gets old for me
[mod edit] I've never spent a penny in any F2P game. Ever. Never will either. If it's not free, I will do without.
Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, Aion, Allods, lots more
Relatively Recently (Re)Played: HL2 (all), Halo (PC, all), Batman:AA; AC, ME, BS, DA, FO3, DS, Doom (all), LFD1&2, KOTOR, Portal 1&2, Blink, Elder Scrolls (all), lots more
Now Playing: None
Hope: None
The fact the game has the amount of players it has proves there's enough people out there that want to develop ships. The fact it has steadily grown, only halting a few months when CCP did the whole Incarna expansion (which added characters mind you, which goes against your statement), did they stop growth. But it's resumed since they got back on track. You can spout out whatever you believe, but it doesn't change the fact EVE is the ONLY sub-based MMO that is GROWING. It's far from the sinking ship you make it out to be.
If a F2P can manage to take my $, that means its pushing the game in the direction I want and I'm 100% happy with my decision. F2P is the best model because players decide how and on what spending their $. A P2P model you pay for so much more and you are being milked.
WOW is my last P2P MMORPG and I don't see a MMORPG coming in near future that can justify the P2P model. Maeby in 2015+ that will change.
