Uptight Stuffed Shirts

For around 4 years my main character name in Guild Wars 1 was No Pants Chinaman. Today I was forced to change my Guild Wars 2 character name because No Pants Chinaman is "unacceptable".

Honestly, ArenaNet? Seriously in this game it's either have a RP name or you can go screw off. So far I'm really enjoying the gameplay. But, whether or not its true, I've heard of someone getting a lockout for saying "poop" in map chat. Seriously? I can't crack a mildly unorthodox joke in /m without being labeled as a "troll".

My Guild, The Paraplegic Swimteam has banded together for this sole reason. We're just a bunch of dudes who want to be able to communicate with other people in game without getting a spanking for expressing ourselves.

I hope there are people out there playing this game who feel the same way I do. That anet has gone a little overboard with these lockouts and bans.

Lol...that was awesome.  Thanks for the laugh.

    No.

Your name obviously offended some one enough that they reported you. Learn to read the TOS.

Immersion is a big part of any mmorpg. Although that name is funny, and the guild name is hilarious, names reflect more than just comical relief. If you ever play LOTRO they have a very strict name filter and it really helps to keep the feel of Middle-Earth.

I may be a stuffed shirt, but names mean something in a game like this. Not a big deal, but I would vote for ArenaNet on this one and not because I'm a fan, but it effects others.

Anyway, I didn't play much of GW1, but I know in GW2 there is a simple way of just reporting someones name as being inappropriate and you may have offended another player. /shrug

Good luck though to your guild and a possible name exoneration!

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

Awww... Does that mean I gotta change my guild name fome "Sweet Tower Lovers" to something else because it offends zhaitan? Crap. Now what to make it...

Expressing yourselves:  Are you, in fact, a Chinaman?  If so, I can understand why you might be upset.  (I'd be upset if I couldn't name my character "No Pants Americaman" because I am, in fact, an Americaman).  But, if you're not a "Chinaman", do you not get how that might be offensive to someone that is?

If we were talking about a Freedom of Speech issue, I'd be on your side.  However, in this case, we are talking about a game that you are playing and in order to play that game you agreed to the TOS.  Therefore, you have a contract, per se, with Arenanet to abide by the TOS.  You didn't so now you are paying the price.

You want me to pay to play a game I already paid for???

i've a sneaking feeling that your guild may have to change its name soon as well..someone will take offence.it is a funny name but this day and age the pc brigade are always out in force.

The justice does not seem to be handed out even handed here though. Just yesterday I was competing against a guild named "We like men" in SPVP. Their 4 letter abreviation was "FGTS" I am surprised they haven't had to change it yet. I see examples like this all over the place. Some of them are ridiculous and deserve to be banned while others are just good humor, although opinions will vary.

We can safely assume that at this point the number of guilds is large enough as to not be reviewable by hand. Therefore it is only by players reporting that names will get fixed.

Rename the guild to Quadrapalegic Swim team and make a guy named Bob the GM.

I really hope that this is sarcastic - and even then it's in bad taste.

It's a pretty common, joke, actually, tailored nicely to this specific situation. I don't see a problem.

You don't see a problem with a joke about quadrapalegic people using an activity that they cannot participate in? Please, explain how you don't see a problem with this.

Not sure why people think GW2 is the first to do this .  WoW was the same on release.

Giant Communist Robots had to rename to Giant Censored Robots etc.  This is not new.

Assuming the OP is not kidding.. .

Does naming a character something that is not rediculous really make the game that much worse for you?

Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!

If it is racist then yeah...

Pretty sure that is. Could be wrong though. If you know anyone Chinese feel free to call them a chinaman and see how they react.

Oh and 7/10 to the OP

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

And large organizations, by their nature, generally don't. It's a strange feeling but Anet seems like they actually intend to enforce the ToCs to the letter. You're just going to have to like it or lump it. All the 4chan stuff will have to be left outside and I'm sorry but if someone cannot communicate effectively without resorting to tired cliches and toilet humor...Well you'll find out soon enough.

    There is NO miracle patch.

95% of what you see in beta won't change by launch.

    Hope is not a stategy.

Listen there is a thing called taking a joke too far and taking a joke too seriously. Its fun to laugh at your own mistakes, but then again its not fun to be constantly rediculed by them. Someone will take offense to them regardless of the situation. You sir, need to learn to lighten up.

I LOVE the fact they are clamping down on stupid names. That is one of the big pluses about this launch.

That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!

No, not everyone feels the need to be offensive to others with inappropriate names.

If that's what you like, thats cool for you, but it's unacceptable to force others to have to deal with it.

I am glad Anet has tried their best to put an end to the ridiculous & offensive names.

Are you a quadrapalegic? If not - what gives you the right to tell anyone what's offensive to them? I happen to be friends with an amazing kid who can't use his arms or legs. You know what he does? He goes around telling jokes. Want to hear a few?

What do you call a man with no arms and no legs sitting on a porch? Matt.

What do you call a man with no arms and no legs sitting in a pile of leaves? Russell.

What do you call a man with no arms and no legs floating in a pool? Bob.

These are old jokes, and he finds them hilarious, and it's a great way for him to break the ice for people who can really only see him for his disability. So before you get on your moral high horse and start taking offense on behalf people that you don't represent, why don't you take a step back, recognize a joke for what it is (in this case a completely ridiculous scenario), and let it be?

I happen to have a fantastic sense of humor. And - behind closed doors, I have made many, many severely innapropriate jokes. But, we are talking about a public game chat channels, public names, and public forums.

A quadrapalegic is not a light hearted racist joke - its a joke about a severely disabled person that cannot participate in a large majority of human activities.

You are correct that there is taking a joke too far and taking it too seriously. Where you are not correct is saying that a joke about severe physical dissabilities is not too far.
