Thanks mmorpg.com! I've been wanting to try this one out, and now I can!

    Much appreciated!

I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.

I've been playing WW2OL since it started, and if anyone has any questions I'll be glad to give my perspective on the game.

This trial, by the way, is starting close to the end of one of our campaigns (or "maps", as we refer to them), so it may not be a typical game experience. As in any player-vs-player game, we have some people who like to switch to the winning side when things get tough, so if you play Axis in this map during the trial you may find yourself outnumbered a lot of the time. Don't let that give you a bad impression of the game experience, because it usually doesn't last more than a week or so at a time...  This map has been going 24/7 for about a month, and has been a pretty quick one compared to past ones.

The one thing I would strongly advise is to try equipment out in the offline mode before going in-game. Take some target practice with the infantry weapons, see how to drive and navigate with the tanks, trucks, boats, and planes. Get your keymapper set the way you like it (that will probably require you to log into the help forums for tips, etc.). Download some maps of the terrain (we play on a half-scale map of northern France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, western Germany, and England, and it may be daunting to find your way around the front line towns, especially if you're flying a plane. The in-game map is good, but a paper map by your side is a great help).

Once in-game, use the "Missions" list to find where people are conducting operations. Use chat to tell someone you're new when you spawn in, and you'll find a lot of people who will be happy to help you get started. If you happen to spawn into a spot where there's a fight going on around you, better to despawn and spawn into another spot that's not under fire, otherwise the chat box is going to be too full and people too busy to help you out. That situation is fairly rare, though, so you should be able to just spawn in and start asking questions.

See you in-game (or right here)...

I'll give it another try, but so far I'm not really impressed. The graphics are sub-subpar for a start, and no one seems to be playing. I also don't like games that force you to have a joystick to play and not give you the optiuon to switch to a mouse config.

It's been said before but let's go over it again: With the hardware of today you can't have Halflife2 graphics AND a visibility limit of up to 8km, there are polygon limits of what your computer can render at a reasonable speed. Add to that the amount of processing required for the calculations of projectiles etc your computer has to perform in this game, it doesn't have "hit points". Yes the graphics engine is dated and a new one is in the works. The current one is constantly being updated and still fulfills its role pretty good.
There are plenty of people playing, you just have to know where. Look for Attack and Defense Objectives (red and green circles on the map). No action in an area? Create it yourself, you'll get some attention for sure.
The game doesn't force you to need a joystick, you can play with a mouse (change it in the keymapper). Of course it might not be as easy to use as a joystick, but you have a choice.

You're probably never going to like this game, because the graphics are never going to be as good as games with much smaller arenas and fewer options. It's just a matter of what you're looking for in a game, and WW2OL isn't some people's cup of tea.

You don't have to have a joystick to play, you can use the mouse quite effectively. You just have to 'master' the keymapper to make use of it.

The above link has a cfml file that you can put in your wwiiol folder. You'll have to read up on it as I use a joystick to play :)

I am on the free trial and I'm not impressed at all

    1. right off the bat the map and mission selector is complete garbage. I don't even want to know how they decided that was a good design.

    2. the terrain graphics I dont have a problem with but atleast make my rifle look like something more than a stick.

    3. I've asked 4 times how to tune my radio ingame and no reply so the 'helpful community" seems to be a myth.

    4. after I have been killed and despawn nothing tells me how I was killed. How do I learn if I have no idea what happened?

    5. the controls for moving around are sloppy and clumsy to say the least. I now know what it would be like to be a robot in world war 2.

swift your right on with all of the problems with the game. However the UI is getting a facelift, the weapons are all getting redone for the mos part, sorry about the no help (hit enter, on the left is 4 boxes for channels, type in 99 (help Ch.) or anyother numerical number 1 - 99 for channels). Yes I doesn't tell you what killed you, but if you go to csr.wwiionline.com you can look up what killed you. And finally the controls are pretty clunky, but you can keymap them to your liking.

All of these things should be getting fixed in 1.19 (aka Beyond Blitzkrieg) except for the community thing which is odd because it is a really helpful community for the most part.

I just found out about this game during the free trial but totally forgot to sign up...image

I have played Battlefield 1942, it's expansions and mods since the day it came out but I always felt as though something was lacking. I was really hoping to give this game a try out and see if it could fill that gap.

Any chance there are buddy keys or similar for those that missed the trial but really want to give the game a try?
