During last month's Gamescom, NCSoft was ready to show off its upcoming Asian fantasy MMO, Blade & Soul. We have a full report about what we saw and heard about B&S. Keep reading and then let us know what you think in the comments.
Have you ever watched one of those old Chinese kung-fu movies? Heck, have you ever watched any Hong Kong kung-fu flick? If you have, chances are you've either a) snickered over no one in these movies are ever even remotely cognizant of the laws of physics or b) really, really wanted to be just like them. Blade & Soul is an MMORPG built to entice those that fall under the second category (and is liable to make those belonging to the first groan in despair). In fact, that desire seems to have been built into the very core of the game.

This game is essentially a different graphical take on TERA. What I believe to be a more martial-arts version of TERA that is much grittier.
In other words, it's a linear themepark with better combat if you enjoy dark novels better than the normal fantasy ones.
I had some Korean business associates who play this explain the general game to me as they play it. It was released in Korea on June 30th, and it essentially is a linear mission grinder, almost worse than TERA. However, the design of combat lends itself better, but is still EXTREMELY grindy, and not in a good way.
Lastly, the game takes that "Bar" of "Over-sexualization" and cranks it off the charts with regard to female models. You wouldn't believe how much editing will have to be done to the NA-release before the ESRB EVER lets it come near our shores, unfortunately.
Don't put this on your list of "Anticipated Games" unless you're into themeparks like TERA & WoW.

Blade & Soul actually does a neat form of "veiled instancing". Essentially, an area can be instanced to only you, but the moment you leave that area WITHOUT loading screens you're in the public instance. However, public instances are limited to roughly 50-100 people due to the graphical constraints (mainly the amount of physX the game employs).

Game is not a TERA clone. B&S is easily playable by anyone with just a quick google search. Unfortunately, I can't tell you what to look for, as it's not technically "legal". If you've been around long enough, that should be enough of a clue about what to look for.
The gameplay is more like Aion, with attacks that combo into each other. Your shortcut bar is very small, but it's deceptively so as just one skill can eventually lead to 3+ other skills, which can link into your other skills, which form more combos. So it's like what Aion wanted to be but didn't quite manage. It is however, very quest-hub based gameplay, which is unfortunate. I've only played one class so far, but I enjoyed it. The classes by the way, are race-restricted, and there's a couple of gender restricted races as well. The mobility in the game far surpasses TERA, as do the graphics IMO, but aesthetically speaking it's a bit wierd. I actually like HTK's artwork, but I don't think it translates well into 3d, everything looks disproportionate, like you're playing through a fun-house mirror. The environments are absolutely phenomenal though, best I've seen in any game so far. The game is not instanced 100%, you have "zones" just like nearly every other MMO these days. There are caves and such that are instanced, you go in and do whatever quest you need to then back to the public areas.
Combat is very flashy and fun, but you can't use most skills while on the run like some of the more action-oriented skills are doing. It's up to personal taste whether that's a good thing or not.

i loved what i played of the korean beta of this game (not the legit beta, but thanks to Atomix i got to try it and ill buy it as soon as it comes to the west). The only thing i disliked is that the questing is as generic and grindy as Tera but the combat is so much more active and fluid and less locked than Tera, and i really loved that in B&S.
I really hope that after GW2's success NCSOFT do something with questing in B&S if they ever plan to release it here in NA
That just hurts me..lol. I was going to play for the pvp...instances kill pvp for me. Rahhhhh, another one bites the dust.

That's a hell of a promo pic for your chosen topic. "Sado-porn, Azn style!"
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
It's pretty much dungeon fighter in 3d enviroment molded into a MMORPG.
Awesome game, played the korean betas. Excited o/
I just hope it doesn't get raped by the westernization.
No, more then likely it was GW2. The earliest this game will be available is probably mid to late 2013 here. So it would probably have little to no impact on CoH.
In War - Victory.
In Peace - Vigilance.
In Death - Sacrifice.
While I was looking forward to this title, given NCSoft's shabby treatment of its communities in City of Heroes and other games, I WONT be picking this one up.
this game was on my list long time before tera actually appeared. sorry.

I think it will appeal to middle aged men as well.
Main issues with this are the female characters.. their legs are really thin and well its just not right.. very distracting when you see them running around with malformed legs...
I enjoyed the combat in this and i liked the magic system... might check it out when released ill jsut have to nto look at the female characters lol..
