Having played both GW2 and SWTOR though, I found that I didn't really enjoy the majority of the story content in either of them.  And there are a few reasons for this:

1.  As compared to a high quality SPRPG (Witcher 2, PST, FFVI, Deus Ex), the majority of the story content in the MMORPGs I played is lacking in the writing, dialogue and plot departments.  They just aren't as interesting, and I'm sure this is because the story is just one part of a huge game, and they need a LOT of story to provide replayability...quantity over quality.

2.  The stories in MMORPGs are also poorly paced.  And this is largely because there has to be a lot of non-story content interspersed between the story content to provide a story that goes all the way to max level.  Oftentimes I forgot where why story left off when I go to pick it up again.

3.  Scripted story is largely a single player affair...this kind of goes counter to the whole massively multiplayer persistent world thing that MMORPGs are supposed to be about.  I know that you can have other people play with you in your stories in MMORPGs...but I would wager that the vast majority of people do them solo.

4.  Scripted stories just aren't very fun to replay, and considering MMORPGs are supposed to have highly replayable content to foster longevity...they just don't seem like a good fit.

 

So what do you all think about this?  Do you think scripted stories should be heavily involved with future MMORPGs?

I will never understand why mmorpg's don't play to their strengths and have story content that is group orientated.

You could write a truly epic story line that people can do together.
