Has SWG gotten better?

Hello all. I'm going to be shopping for a new game to try in the very near future - just cancelled my WoW account. When SWG was in development, I was very interested in it. After it was released, I heard so much bad stuff that, frankly, it scared the hell out of me - there was no way I was even going to try it. Now I've been hearing that it may have gotten better. Is this true, or is it just more hype. I don't care about playing a jedi, so that wouldn't be a factor for me. Can I get some honest opinions from you folks? Thanks.

Im in the same situation actually except ive played SWG. I liked swg a lot before but i didnt enjoy the pvp in 2003 because of the uber commando's and bounty hunters making life impossible for carbineer/squad leaders like me. I was a storm trooper and i had a lot of fun hunting rebels down but at the time commando falme and bounty hunter knockdowns ect were just too much to handle. I stopped playing to go to DaoC and played that until WoW was released. Sadly enough WoW SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sorry i had to do that im so pissed off at this server crashing probelm and especially since this new patch was released at like 4pm and it just finally got back online at 12:30 am. Im sure it will be back down when i wake up like it always is. When i play WoW now i literally start to dose off from the most repetative grinding of quests and shit for pvp. I im seriously considering going to SWG but most of the stuff i want to see isnt out yet or on the JTLS expansio and i dont know if it good enough to purchase.... Gamespot.com gave it a shit review like the rest so im wary. Then again when i played SWG i felt like the review it got was unfair and deserved at least a 8.5-9 to be fair because it is a hell of alot better than most mmo... especially daoc now. WoW graphics are quickly out of date now and already have fell behind and this whole "artistic expression of illustration like graphics" is a bunch of bs so blizzard doesnt have to produce a quality high end graphical system. Im definetly moving on from this crap because if i see one more dman orc who looks like a paladin ill throw my monitor in the garbage...... i dont get why it called WoW it is nothing like Warcraft 3 or it's predecessors. I see a tauren riding around looking like some wannabe knight instead of a tribal warrior taurens are ect.
Besides all that i really miss star wars story and the imperial empire, ive seen the new armors they making for both factions and im amazed. One thing though, i have always wanted to be a smuggler and be aligned to the hutts or some smuggling faction and not so much imperial or rebel..... is this possible now with the privateer ect?
ESPECIALLY if you dont shoot for Jedi SWG has gotten MUCH better .. ironically under pressure from players wandering off to WoW.
With the total change in combat come May and the Wookie expansion also in May, 10 days before Episode III hits the cinemas, this is one of the best times to (re)start SWG. YOu can also expect to get a good deal of main game + 2 expansions and//or a Fileplanet free trial right about this time.
Not that its not already worth to join the game now. And yes, reviews have been hyping DOWN SWG and JTL IMHO , especially compared with the unjustified hype for WoW, which is an excellent game for newbies in the MMORPG genre, but gets old so quickly it hurts.
If you want to know more ... just read into a few of the other threads here (especially about smuggling, Civil War, bug fixes etc.). And if you want to know more .. just let us know.

I am in the same boat as you, tried EQ2 and WoW after a fairly lengthy stint in CoH, which was preceeded by a 7 month long ordeal with SWG. The hologrind washed me up big time, but now that it is gone, I find myself enjoying the game as an Imperial Pilot climbing the ranks...
After having played WoW, I can almost guarantee you that you will find SWG to be in a completely more superior category of MMO's compared to World of Borecraft...

The whole idea of SwG behind SwG is to become your favorite star wars character. What i'd like to know is being a storm trooper more viable now? I would also like to where the new armor like the shock trooper armor ect. When i played SWG most people didnt where faction armor/clothing.... are there more people who do now or still he same composite armor around? If i were to take up SwG again id go Squad leader/ Riflemen or carbineer.... does this work well with storm trooper armor?

Not yet , but will be after 5 th May when stormtrooper armor becomes player craftable and comparable to the other armor types (which are ALL revamped). But maybe you prefer scout biker armor :-) ??
Imperial pilot in space however (or how does Inquisitor sound :-) is already perfectly playable !

SWG has come a long way in its time, especially with the expansions. One thing is still for certain though, it's best if you're a Star Wars fan already. (Who isn't?) Immersing yourself in the SWG world is alot of fun, and even for those outside the fan circle, it's got lots of nice features, socializing, and a great community of players. It's not the typical fantasy genre most are interested in, but it's quite unique.

Ok... just ordered a copy of the game - it should be here early next week.
Does anyone have any suggestion for what server to play on? I live in the Mountain Time zone.
If you like pvp then Bloodfin is great. Constant server wide battles etc

Its in the works and comes 5th May. The community has STRONGLY voiced the opinion that they would rather see the combat revamp as late as necessary to test it properly, but it has to WORK when it goes live !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
