How much boost in performance i will get? is it worth the upgrade?
I have coolermaster bronze GX 550Watts power supply. Would it be sufficent to run 7870?
Thanks.
Comments
IMO yes it is worth it.
I run a 7870 and am very well pleased with the performance. As far as just how much you would get, try a google search comparing the cards and see. You can do that just as easy as someone else.
What are the rest of your system specs like?
If you have an old CPU and not much ram then they could be a bottle neck for the graphics card and it could turn out to be a big waste of money..
I run an I5 2500k @ 4.4 ghz
Samsung 120g SSD x 2
16g DDR3 1600 ( patriot )
Win 7 64 bit
So no the other components are not a bottleneck. Just do a simple google search and you will see what gains you will have.
edit: But if you have an older cpu, not much ram, ect then it may not be worth it. What are your system specs might be a better question.
Amd Phenom 1075 T 6 core cpu.
6 gb ram (got another 2 gb stick i never used)
Asus M4A88TD-V EVO / USB3 motherboard
Win 7 64 bit.
So i am good to go? my power supply is good enough? i mostly play GW2 will i see fps boost?
I can tell you that my 5770 ran satisfactorally(over 30 fps 99% of the time), but I recently upgraded to one of these used:
http://www.guru3d.com/article/msi-radeon-6970-lighting-review/
and the difference is night and day. So I imagine the 7870 would be worth it. I'm running a 550 watt PSU, too, and I bet the newer 7870 is probably more power efficient than this monstrous beast.
It was strange though. For GW2, I had to allow for more power, yet underclock it, otherwise performance suffered. Doesn't make a friggin' bit of sense. No other game has that issue.
Yes you should be fine with that PSU. But why are you using 6gb memory? match your memory channels. I.E. two 4g sticks, four 2gb sticks, two 8gb sticks, ect. You dont want to be using 6gb, which I assume is one 4gb and one 2gb or 3 x 2gb.
Correct your mismatched memory while your upgrading.
Only 2gb sticks were avilable when i bought the parts and i really didn't want to wait for 1 week so bought 2 gb sticks. I am not even sure if 4th stick works or not.
Is it possible to match memory channel of 3 x 2 gb sticks?
YES
well worth it.
Also you don't need to match all 4 memory slots, you just have to pair your sticks, a pair of 1st and a pair of 2s work fine, you only get problems with performance if you've put them in the wrong slots and paired 1s with 2s.
yes do it.
If you are using 2 * 1gb sticks
And 2 * 2gb sticks
That works provided they are paired like for like (on a good mobo, the slots will be colour coded for each pair)
If you are using say 1 * 2gb and 1 * 4gb. Or 3 * 2gb. That will cause trouble.
That said the 7870 will let you play every current game very well in hd.
Not sure jdnewell is correct on the unmatched memory thing(also not sure they arent', either), but in this case, you definitely don't want to go with 3 sticks. Your board uses DDR, which means that you run double bus speed when you use matching pairs of memory in each channel. But if you only have one stick in one pair of slots, then that will keep your system from running at that double bus speed.
That's where I'm not familiar with jdnewell's suggestion that all memory sticks have to match. The pairs have to match in each channel, but I'm not familiar with anything indicating that each channel has to match each other.
If you want to turn graphical settings higher with smooth frame rates than you can with your current video card, then yes, that's a worthwhile upgrade. You should expect that it will be well over double the graphical performance of your current card.
But getting a decent quality power supply should be a higher priority, since the one you have now is junk.

That's a 650 W version rather than your 550 W, but still, it's junk. Energy efficiency is poor, ripple runs way out of spec, internal components are poor quality, and the power supply died entirely before it could finish testing.
Some options for you:

I wouldn't get either of the ones with rebates unless you'll do the rebates, as the others are a better deal otherwise.
It sounds like he is using 3 x 2g sticks leaving one slot empty. The easiest thing would be to add a 2g stick to the empty slot if that is the case.
And yeah if you run 2 x 2g and 2 x 1g you would be fine from my understanding. Others here will know better than I for sure. Either way running 6gb with 3 x 2gb sticks isnt a good idea. RAM is cheap enuff to make it an affordable and easy fix IMO.
Back on the original topic. The 7870 should give you enough of a performance increase to justify the purchase. Your PSU should be able to run it ok, but no telling for sure until you try it.. IMO get the 7870 and another 2gb stick of RAM and you should be good to go.
Good luck with whatever you choose.
yup good to go.. i just see some people spents lots on graphics cards when the rest of their system is like 7 years old and then ask why it didnt make a difference
Will you se an fps boost in GW2? now you should do but its not the most optimized game for AMD/ATI stuff..
Is perfectly fine for AMD video cards. It's not one of them "nvidia games".
