got my arse handed to me today about 20 times doing my level 6 personal story. I was level 16 ish but it down leveled me to level 6 and had me gight ing about 5 level 8 mobs a couple of which would take 1/2 my health per hit. Anyone else having difficulty with these. This was on a Asura thief, my human elemntalist had a similar experiance with his early level story missions, my Sylvari mesmer cruised through what I have done of his with no issues.

Yeah certain episodes of certain races in the personal story can extremely hard.
This gets even more true in the later levels, 50-60+, as the stories also become longer and more involved.
most are not difficult but some are
- depending on Race and your character creation choices
for humans, if you picked Peasant for upbringing,
the level 8 story to Save Quinn gave me issues

Some battle can be hard indeed. Like the human story when you have to wade through the swamps, you got exploding undead that kills all the npc easily.
Took me a couple of times and a lot of swearing till I figured it out:P
Some stories are tougher than others but I think you need a bit of training playing thief, 10 levels over should still be easy.
Start by respeccing and set all you traits in one of the 2 defensive stats (the one that give health or toughness).
Also, see if you cant buy some cheap green armor and weapons from the AH that is close to your level, it helps a lot.
2 pistols are easiest to learn be good at, start by running in circles around your oponent firing autoattack and the unloading skill. You will learn more tricks later to that but it is a start.
I prefer 2 daggers myself, and they are an excellent secondary weapon to the pistols in the beginning.
Also, buy the heal that makes you roll backwards, then you can first get in with the daggers, do a lotus jump or 2 and circle the opponent close a little while, then when you start to loose some life, roll out and change to pistols. Dodge if the oponent do some kind of animated attacks that is slower than instant, those tend to hurt.
Theifs are considered the second hardest class, funny enough after mesmer, but they just need you to master a few basics and knowing all your attacks.
Remember, practice makes master. Good luck.
I had little trouble with that one, I played my human street rat up to lvl 50 in the story and the hardest still was funny enough to rescue that whiny Quinn when he was hold in the small village south of DR. I think it was lvl 9 or something.
after playing each race to near 20 some stories definitely are much harder than others... it also really depends on build too as many story quests generally require you to take on numerous enemies at once so putting together a spec that does better at AOE generally is a big help.
Hardest so far was my level 30 sylvari quest killing the lich king.. I really don't know how you could solo this fight because it gives you a weapon that you have to use for the entire fight... the issue is the weapon hits like a wet noodle.. the lich king starts with a group of baddies with him and when he gets low health he summons another group. Also if you try to rez spawn him he regenerates all his health and you are back to square 1.. I had to get a guild member to help out on that one.
I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg
Try a different approach: even changing how you start the fight can change if you win or lose.
Hardest one for me was the saving kids fight if you choose vigil as a human. Lots of mobs that can knock down plus exploding mobs that charge in...anything lands on you = death.
PS- isn't it good to have some of them hard? I kinda like that some are easy and some are hard.
Most memorable games: AoC(Tryanny PvP), RIFT, GW, GW2, Ragnarok Online, Aion, FFXI, FFXIV, Secret World, League of Legends (Silver II rank)
or nothing in this game is hard spam.. but either way I'd really love to know how you could solo that level 30 sylvari quest.. build doesn't play a huge role because you are forced to use a very weak weapon.. oh well just glad you can bring friends into the quests

Last night I was doing my lvl 62 one that I was finding quite challenging, died a few times until I fiqured out a good strategy. In the end it bugged out on me and I couldnt complete it
Going to redo it tonight with hopefully 0-deaths and 0-bugs

am using pistol, pistol/dagger dagger. Specced in the 1st trait line not the health/armor one. Problem was both companions died instantly in the middle of the mobs so I could not rez them. There was a turrent at the top of the stairs and as sonn as I got to where I could get it in line of sight it would 1 - 2 shot me. Finally figured out what I needed to do was lay down a trap and caltrops and jump up to aggre the mobs then run like hell for the instance backwards and that way I could take out one mob per death, then died about three more times before taking out the turrent with poison. Mobs were level 8 but the game deleveled me to 6.
Mesmer for me is a much easier class to play than thief. I can kite and circle strafe the crap out of 4 to 5 mobs 3 levels above me with no issues. Was no room to strafe in this one and that turrent was just deadly as was teh boss mob

Anyone who says they are not hard is most likely playing a ranger. As for AoE specs, good luck with that. I tried it with my thief when a dozoen or so grawl came in and most of them were archers. This was during the drunken Norn's Dude! Where's my warwagon mission arc.
On my level 8 Human street rat mission, I took the other option than the OP and I died so many times with my mesmer that I was naked. The bandits killed me and by the time I got back, they had killed Logan and the six Seraph he had with him. I had to come back at level 12 and do that mission once I had more skills, better armor and so forth.
yea thief can be pretty damn hard to stay alive when you get a swarm of ranged mobs on you that drop you in less than 5 seconds.

Tell me about it. Some classes have a REAL difficulty in story per se, and some story instancea are REALLY absurdly overpowered. They really need to work over them.

So far only have experienced Norn story to 35ish, Charr to 13ish, and Asura to 24ish. Some are definitely harder than others. Be sure to have level appropriate gear on you. Restart from checkpoint. Call in friends (not sure if that actually can make it harder - do personal stories scale for groups?). Even with all of that there is a particular one for level 16 in Norn area where I was naked when we finally finished it. We were both in our 20s. Funniest thing is that my husband was like oh does the little norn need help? I'll come and help you I'm sure it's just something you're missing..... He didn't have any pants on when we left:)
hmmm one thing I am seeing here is that everyones personal story line quests are not the same for everyone and not just the sdame for each race and possibly even not the same for same race and class. My elementalist and my Guardian are both human and just started the guardian story and it is totally different than what my elly experianced. I have a feeling those questions asked during character creation have a lot to do with it
Oh and I have a Norn ranger whose story is up into the high teens and his has been very doable other than I can't get the last point of interest in town till his story sends me there. So far just this one thief quest and a couple of my elllys have given me a fit

at the character creator every single selection you make completely changes how your story unfolds at least upto 30 past that I'm not sure.. but it really helps the replayability of the game for me as I actually enjoy many of the stories and seeing how differn't each one is depending on my choices not only in the CC but also during the story when you get to choose between differn't options.

agree - i dont think class matters at all for story selection
under lvl 30, your story is based on your race, and the series of choices you made when you created your character
you are given 3 personal traits to choose from a few times when doing your biography
