MtG MMO ideas

asmkm22asmkm22 Member Posts: 1,788

Obviously, this is just a thought excersise, but I figured it would be fun to see what opinions people have.

Question:  What MtG set would you choose as a basis for an MMO?

For me, it would be a close call between the Ice Age block, and Zendikar block, with Zendikar winning out.  I chose Zendikar because the fluff is basically about a world of exploration and discovery.  Outposts and settlments with the main purpose of putting together expeditions and such.  As the Eldrazi story starts to take off, it would have plenty of "raid" potential with some really great environments.  With the exploration theme, sandboxing would have plenty of room.

Ravnica would be an easy choice, however, if the game was at all focused on PvP.  The guilds would make for some great DAoC style gameplay.

Anyway, how would you go about doing it?

I think your lastly should be firstly or you are wasting the most important element of the property.

Main question had less to do with game mechanics, and more to do with setting.  The last paragraph was an afterthought.

GW1 system just doesnt work in a Open World Themepark MMO.

GW1 got away with it, because its a Diablo style game, not a MMO.

Hard to balance such a thing with multiple classes.

OK, well I deleted the last paragraph about possible game mechanics because it wasn't even the main point of the question, which seems to be confusing people.

A Magic: The Gathering MMO would have to have multiple worlds.  The entire premise of the game is that we're planeswalkers and not restricted to one world.  I'd love to see Dominaria, Zendikar, Ravnica, and New Phyrexia (Mirrodin) as explorable worlds.

Being that Planeswalkers are rare, players would have to have some sort of plane-hopping technology similar to the Weatherlight unless WotC decided that everyone would be a 'walker, which would be extremely lame IMO.  I'd rather see 'walkers be akin to pre-NGE Jedi in Star Wars Galaxies.

As far as game plot goes I suppose Phyrexia could be the common enemy. The overarching goal could be to help Karn and other 'walkers take back Mirrodin from the Phyrexians.

I think it would have to be a classless game where players pick color combinations in an open talent tree to build their character.  I don't really know how you'd work summoning critters into the game but that would have to be a core element seeing it's about 75% of the current meta for the TCG in Standard and Modern.

If it ever happened I'd be interested because I love the lore behind the characters and the different planes.  It would probably be reduced to a loot treadmill though so in a way I'd rather it never be made because I'd hate to see the IP reduced to that.

Setting is completely irrelevent to me - I see it as purely a marketting tool to get people who recognize the IP to stop and look.   The setting tells me *nothing* about whether or not I will actually enjoy the *game*.

your point about Planeswalkers being rare is a good one, and I didn't consider the impact.  I did just assume that all players would be one, since it seems like most MMO's require a certain degree of believe be suspended to justify all the heros and stuff.

That said, there are a tone of non-planeswalker characters in the lore that could easily make for a heroic MMO.  The one thing to consider though, would be that plansewalkers are the ones who typically manipulate the colors of magic, and summon creatures and stuff, where as all the other characters are simply identify with one or more color of magic.

Just idle thinking there, but thanks for the post.
