Rift gave us everything WoW did, but candy coated. So what appeared "better" was shallow compared to the items/skills/gear/experiances etc that we had with WoW.
Its like getting a new 10 speed for christmas, when all you do is ride down a bumpy driveway. You know the 10 speed is fast and can travel far, but you still ride that old blue bike because it hops better down a road you know.
Too many people (see: tween/juvinile) are either OMG BEST EVER or LOLS THATS HORRIBAD. With juvinile thinking like that, its hard to get actual opinions on why games fail. I'm 40 and can give you an "adult" opinion and its ignored, while some spazzed out twerp screaming that Rift is bad because they used too much blue on the box art will get points up on forums.
I just returned to Rift @2 months ago. The game world has grown, but the "small pond" of players is definitly down. Also, the community in Rift is one of the WORST I have ever encountered in all my MMO travels. I will get jumped for saying that, but I am only giving you an honest opinion from someone that has played them "all".
Last night a new player asked about the specs and until I took time out of my raid and spoke to him about things, all he got was attacked in 50 chat. I know, it happens in all mmos, but something is different in Rift. People openly brag about being "trolls". That is hilarious in its self as they are not trolls, but just obnoxious people that like to say penis WAAAY too often.
Trion knows its player base, and are extremelly aggressive at being proactive when it comes to player opinions, but what I am finding is that they listen to the public too much. We are getting "Everything" we wanti n Rift, and what is happening is that those with short attention span, but huge amount of game time are "beating" the game, getting their loot, then quitting until next big patch. So we have this inflated sense of a solid guild, when actually we are just paying to play for 1 raid a week....
Ask me any questions about Rift, or past MMOs and I'll shoot you an answer as honest as I can answer.
It has nothing to do with what they don't like, they are simply trying out the new shiny thing.
My guild went to GW2 in droves, now they are trickling back to Rift. It was only temporary.
If you think Rift's population is anything like what GW2's is stabilizing to be, you need to step into reality.
People have been speculating the answer to op's question for over a year now, and Im sure Trion would love to know the answer.
Take your medication, scooter.
I made no claim as to the populations of Rift or GW2, I mentioned that my guild moved to GW2 and are now moving back.
I'm sure you can find someone else on these forums to argue with about nothing. It's not going to be me.
You certainly did make a claim about the populations of the two games. You claimed that GW2s population is only high because its new. You also said Rift's lower population has 'nothing to do with what they dont like' when it obviously does. If there werent things people disliked then the population wouldnt have plummeted so much over the course of the last 18 months.

I have had the opposite experience, on the servers I have played on, the players have been far better then in most MMORPGs I have played, for me they have been very helpful and kind (I had to be saved occasionally).
I, like you, am not a kid (/slowly inchs in the direction of 50), and have played MMO for some time not (since EQ).
I'm thinking about the annual subscription with the free expansion . I've just logged into both the beta and Rift light sadly the beta has a low population and of all the english speaking eu servers are lot apart from icewatch which is on medium . Its a great game but I think after what I've just seen I'll wait untill the weekend before the expansion pack launch to see what its like then or maybe untill after christmas when they usually have another annual subscription offer . I've a feeling it could be heading for a freemium model if things dont improve a bit .
Rift's population is currently rising. Especially this week as many seem to be subbing in or buying the game just before the expansion comes. Right now, on the main servers, population is pretty heavy (even if the servers say medium). Players are everywhere and expect to drop about 40-60 fps in the main towns. It's pretty busy.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Are those the North American servers ? In the EU theres only three at medium load and the other ten are low .

The servers will see a rise before and after the expansion, Im sure the EU servers will be no different. The question nobody knows the answer to is what the population will be like in 3-4 months. Nothing that happens in the next month or two will help answer that, no matter how many people come back.
The server population statuses are fairly useless because they arent dynamic.

No, on the EU ones here. I did say 'on the main servers'. I'm on icewatch and it's rammed at peak time. It's not as busy today tho cos tons are playing the SL beta weekend.

What server are you on? that may be the issue.
lol, nice reply
Thats like asking why GW2's pop is not the = of WoW's, it is pointless,
play what YOU like.
That is the only way YOU will have fun.
