I think the one of the main reason would be the same why people refuse to leave WoW. You spent days and days of playtime and possibly some money on your account... Are you strong enough to throw it away, because game is not so interesting anymore?
With Eve especially, where learning curve is super steep and you get your skills over time, you can't escape this notion of "throwing away your years of life".

And that's the beauty of EVE. It filters out the solo players and the instant gratification crowd. Sorry you didn't like it, there's GW2, WoW, and Rift for you... EVE is all about playing with others. You need to join a corp to fully experience the game (or at least one tiny aspect of the game, depending on what type of corp it is). You do NOT need to invest any time mining to make enough ISK for pvp. I do missions, salvaging, and station trading to earn my billions. Even with the multiboxers, I am willing to bet EVE still has more individual concurrent players on any given day than even the newest of themepark games. Themeparks have a lot of concurrent users during their first week, before everyone figures out how boring and pointless the game is.

WoW is ,well , WoW , and GW2 has tons of EU and NA servers that still sit at full often during prime time.
EVE is good for what it is , but trying to say it has more online concurrent players than any other mmorpg is just ridiculous.
Nothing that keeps me playing.PVE combat is super boring and easy. It wasn't fun in the trial so i bailed.
This is what I've heard and keeps me from giving this a try. Hopefully I've heard wrong as I'd like to try a game with more freedom. Are these people exaggerating PvE boredom. Would someone be able to have fun in this game solo?
It appears that I would have to try this game myself to see if I would find it fun as most of the people that have played it contradict each other. I don't quite understand how you can be viable quickly but still be motivated to play and have nearly infinite character progression. This game is great for casuals and hardcores? With full loot how would that promote hardcores that build up stuff over a long period of time? Other full loot games seem to have easy to obtain stuff/gear so you don't really care too much if you lose it.

People contradict each other about EVE for several reasons. First is that there's just so damb much of it. Imagine someone who visited New York for a weekend arguing with someone who'd lived in Montana all their life about "what America is like". Second, people bring very different perspectives to EVE - one guy sees freedom, another guy sees like of direction. One guy sees crappy PvE content, another is indifferent to the resource gathering mechanisms as long as they work.
You can be viable quickly because EVE is all about roles. Some roles you can train into very quickly, others take a very considerable amount of time. But the quick-and-easy-to-train roles don't become obselete. Even fleets full of high-skill point players will still want tacklers, scouts, probers and so on (in fact they're often desperately short of people willing to fill these roles).
EVE is full loot, but the standard PvP equipment is readily obtainable and is manufactured by players, so you won't be at too deep a disadvantage, especially after the first 3 months or so. Once you can use T2 modules, you'll be using the same equipment on your ship that a 2003 vet flying the same ship does. This is because having 150,000,000 SP doesn't in and of itself give you any advantages. The 2003 guy will only have a few percent more EHP and damage than a 2011 guy.

The fact that every MMO, or MMORPG launched since like the year of 2005 on has been a complete FAILURE because of the FREE 2 Play thing, and really its not FREE 2 Play.

The only MMO's that are currently not like this is GuildWars 2, and DarkFall the only decen't MMO's besides even still around.
Nexon, Perfect World, Aeria Games, Suba Games, Gamers First, All Failures in the MMO industry. I used to be paying customers from many of these companies until they got greedy, and I mean spending more than the average subscription price with Nexon for example when Combat arms wasn't Pay 2 Enjoy with specialists and such.
I am sure there are others, but these are the reason MMO Genere is dieing is GREED.
Gamers First, For example I wish I had millions if not billions of dollars in RL I would totally buy out APB which they failed at, and relaunch the game again with good developers, and who knows with that type of money maybe I would just start a new game with a new game engine and better design things APB didn't have. SWTOR, for example was a failure they could have done much better game design, I played beta, saw the bugs, the content it lacked didn't even buy the game after that.
If a MMORPG can't offer me a free demo, show me more than a cinematic video, and show me decent actual in game snapshots chances are the game is a failure.
This is why I tend to stay away from these so called FREE 2 Play titles and if I play I don't put in a lot of cash at all because of what the companies reputations are known for.
Oh and this is what makes EVE so great, and the reason I still actually have a subscription to EVE.

Sitting in a random system waiting for 6h (!) for someone to log back on after they tried to save themselves by logging out..may not sound to epic, but the feeling of their ":(" in local afterwards, was.
I had to...let's call it "get rid of my character" to finally stop playing. I tried going back a few times but the thought of my main just sitting there outside my grasp made me look at my new made toon and realise things will never be the same.
But yeah, I never really liked space games and only started EVE because I had never tried an mmo before it and a friend was playing. But the game did everything so good that it made me stay. And this was way before T2 was even in game and thankfully, before megajumping all over the place was implemented.

i played eve for some time, it's not too bad, i am just not the simulation guy. i like it direct.

EVE is more Massively Multiplayer than any other game in the universe, at the moment.
The only thing it simulates is a free economy. Everything else is pretty much just your standard turn based MMO stuff. The space flying has zero simulation in it.

Rift doesn't have more subs. EQ is less today, and it's not that much older; same with UO. EQ2 didn't do any better, and switched to F2P. STO didn't have more subs. LoTRO wasn't much better before it went F2P. DDO never got to 400k subs, SWG peaked at like 500 and then lost most of that with the NGE. With Funcoms recent troubles I"m hard pressed to believe that TSW is doing much better. STO can't be doing that much better either if they have to switch to F2P. FF14, Can't imagine they did much better considering they're practically overhauling that game. CoH supposedly hit like 250k.
Where's Tabula Rasa? How about Auto Assault? The matrix online?

They will never see a million. I'm not here to say EVE is on a death bed but it's in decline and it will remain in decline. Because of the nature of it, decline for EVE will resemble growth and in 10 years they will be where they were 5 years ago but they saw their height.
If they show Dust as part of the EVE population they will have a chance at a few million "active EVE Players" but it will just be smoke and mirrors from there on in.

That's changing a bit in Retribution (4 Dec 2012). The NPCs are going to be slightly smarter and work together more.

Eve's not a space sim.
Sure it has 4X trading elements but a true space sim is something like X3 Albion Prelude or to a lesser extent Free Space.
Eve is a mish mash much like other MMOs. It pulls from a few sub-genres but its anything but a pure sim.
