I am not going to waste any more gems on keys. I will just see if prices will be affordable for new skins and purchase from TP. However i highly doubt it. For a MMO where new skins is all the draw i don't like this gambling.
I checked forums and asked guildies, many are having same luck as me.
So if you are one of the lucky ones don't forget to share your skins with us.
You knew it was a gamble going in before you even bought the keys. Since each chest has a mutually exclusive chance for a skin it doesn't matter if you open 1 or 9999999999999999999999999999 it's no more or less likely to get a skin. I for one don't gamble in games. Any game with chests and keys is one where I'm going to avoid that portion a la TF2, SMNC, etc etc. This is nothing new to MMORPGs I don't see what the big deal everyone has here.
The whole chest thing is totally being blown out of proportion. Not to mention that there are probably better things in life to spend money on than gambling and bigger things to worry about than chests and keys in a video game. Hopefully, you've learned from your gamble.
TL;DR It's gambling pure and simple. You knew the risks going in. I don't feel for you any more than someone that loses $1,000's in Las Vegas.

Umm..nope i didn't know it was gambling but i realised it after opening enough chests to see what is this all about.
Something Anet forgot to mention on their Halloween event page. If they had said somethign about the odds of getting these items from BLC i would never do that.

How do you not know it's gambling? You're opening a chest with a random CHANCE for items. That's gambling. If you actually needed someone to explain that to you..... BLC's are gambling period. Both pre-event, during event, and eventually post event. You're getting random items out a chest with no guarantee as to what's in there except that it's something.
It doesn't matter if there's a 99% chance to get the items and 1% chance not to; that's still gambling. It sounds like you didn't think before you purchased. Please go take a look at any game offering chests, it's the same exact deal. It's few and far between when they tell you the odds of winning. They don't owe you items for buying keys and you do not increase your chances of winning in the vast majority of gambling, especially here, by gambling more. Like I said each chest has it's own independent chance of having the items so even if it was a 99% chance that the item is in the chest you could open 100000000000000000 chests and get nothing. Play a 1000000000000000 games on a slot machine you're not more likely to win the 100000000000000000 game than the first. You don't increase your odds at all.
Hopefully you live and learn. You're story sounds like someone who went to a casino for the first time and thought they could beat the odds. No sympathy here.
TL;DR Chests are the same as slot machines. This is true for any and all games featuring the chest + key scenario. Now you know and knowing is half the battle.
what exactly where you thinking when you opened chest number 50, 60, or even chest 70 that compelled you to keep trying?
The same reason why people pull one more lever, place one more bet, drink one more drink, take one more hit.
MMO developers are no different than any other company out there, they'll feed on their consumers until they're dry.
The moral of the story is, don't be a sucker.

QFT. Moral of the story take a fucking statistics/probability/whatever class. This is so common sense I face palm that anyone is upset at all. They teach you this stuff by high school at the latest (USA)...........at least they did when I was a kid.

Difference being, those people at least have enough common sense to know they made a bad decision. They just can't help but to do it anyway. I don't think I've seen anyone play slots and then complain that the game is 'gambling' and that they deserve a reward.
I guess some people just need extra special disclaimers w/ sparkly stickers attached.
They already said they are looking into making a conversion from stuff we get from chests normally to the event items. Im guessing there will be a vendor which will exchange items based on the boosts and tonics and such we get.
"Hey, everyone. As mentioned earlier in this thread, the team has taken on board your feedback and concerns.
We’d recommend not throwing away or selling the items you’ve been receiving in the Black Lion Chests, as we’ll be providing ways in which those items can be used to obtain Halloween-related items…
We’ll have further updates when they become available."
Never argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

The developers of today design games that exploit the weaknesses of the human condition, for example, gambling for items through horrible odds. Things have gotten so bad that Perfect World refused to even post the odds of winning certain items in Star Trek Online through their lockbox gambling scheme.
A large number of gamers have no chance, regardless of what they've been taught or not. Because of their weakness, they've become prey to corporate greed and don't even know it.

You realise that i havent spent a dime of cash on thsi event? i mentioned that in my OP. I did blew some of my saved up gems but i realised soon enough that the odds are actually very very low.
I didn't understand Anet's version of chance considering it is a game after all not an actual casino. So if you want to blame me for having too much faith in Anet then you got me there.

Clearly you know what you're talking about. This is Psych 101 here afterall so let's get technical.....
It's straight up operant conditioning with a variable ratio schedule of reinforcement. It's literally a slot machine. Human beings are prone to this weakness (you're right), this being the most reinforcing schedule and all, but they have every capacity in the world to not engage in the behavior.
When rats are pressing a bar for food on the same schedule, yeah that's a weakness, they can't even understand what's going on. People on the other hand aren't rats. Humans can grasp the scenario just by thinking about it or after opening a ton (in this case 80) chests they should see the scheme at hand. Rats on the other hand stand no chance and are going to press that bar ad nauseum. This is why humans falling into this trap get no pity from me despite my knowledge of the factors in play.

Yes the blame lies with you the consumer for not educating yourself before engaging in a transaction. This is one case where it's not the fault of some big bad evil corporation or "The Man."
Side note: While company's are generally not intentionally huge, uncaring, evil machines, it's probably not a good idea to put "faith" into any of them. They're not your friends or family.

It absolutely is conditioning. They toss you a few free keys here and there in hopes that you'll get hooked so you'll then turn around and rush off to buy more keys. And more keys. And more keys.
And it works. Time and time again. STO proved that nicely.
I understand your sentiment and you're right, ultimately the consumer is to blame for handing over their bank to gamble for said items. However, the developers must share some of that blame. They are exploiting people and their weaknesses in order to profit. There's a reason why Vegas and big-time gambling is regulated.
Mark my words, in the near future they're going to regulate this type of backdoor gambling crap. There are plenty of suckers out there willing to empty their (or daddy's) bank accounts and once enough moms and pops get pissed off, things will get rolling.
The whole thing is dirty and I don't like it. I don't like these a**hat designers who exploit people for greed and gain. And it's all of us gamers who also suffer in the process because the devs focus a large amount of time and resources into these schemes.
But whatever, people will just pull that lever one more time. Just one more time...

Nice posts (wo)man. It's always good to talk with someone in the know if you will. No offense to any other posters at all.
In my posts I'm not trying to say the practice is acceptable, but I can't feel too much for those that fall for it. Educated consumers trump business left and right.
I really don't think that it needs to be removed from gaming. Some people really like gambling and that's who it should be there for. It's an entirely optional activity so you are not forced to engage in it. I have 20 some chests sitting in my inventory and I'm not rushing out to buy keys. I don't gamble in real life and I don't gamble in video games either.

Backatcha.
The rabbit hole is deep, no? The red pill can make one nauseous at times.
"The Matrix is a system, Neo. That system is our enemy. But when you're inside, you look around, what do you see? Businessmen, teachers, lawyers, carpenters. The very minds of the people we are trying to save. But until we do, these people are still a part of that system and that makes them our enemy. You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it." ~ Morpheus

I'd be all for that if it had absolutely NO ties financially. As it is now, these games offer gambling through way of personal financing and that's a problem. Even if you can acquire ways to gamble through other means, it still opens the door of exploitation and greed.
Let's be honest here, these companies want to bleed every last nickle out of whoever they can sucker in with these gambling schemes. They want ALL of it.

No i wanted an option to win the items through completing events. The items could still be very much unique and rare but atleast add a third option of rewarding players for playing the game rather than just based on how much cash you can spend on CS or how much gold you can farm.
And once again like i said earlier. I didn't realize that by entering a halloween event i am entering a casino.
And by faith i meant they way they have conducted GW1 in past. Reputation does means alot so yes my faith was misplaced based on my past experinces with Anet.

Ah Zomorro...the Mystic Forge is the answer to every problem, hehehe.
I'm willing to bet that won't stop unlucky people from complaining.
Lol true.

skin prices are dopping rapidly already on the TP the greatsaw skin is down from 44 gold to 29 gold... once the mystic forge thing goes in these prices will probably plummet.. only a couple i see are still very rare.. the spider bow and the Crossing weapon skins.. all the shoulder skins are 2 gold or under

By the way OP didn't spend any real life cash on this lottery nonsense. He used the gems he had saved up that he bought from the gold earned while playing the game. I doubt he lost anything other than his faith in Anet.
This is what you get when you hold gaming companies in higher regard than they deserve.
Yeah horrible event for most of us sadly. The free stuffs fun at least and im glad i got some costumes. I opened 35 black lion chests then about 25 holiday forge chests tht they just added tonight. I got 2 pairs of crappy shoulders and so much trick or treat junk i had to break the tonics of failness.
Lesson learned. Anets rates are worse then most f2p games. I will never buy black chests for RNG again.
Failed on your RNG? We feel your pain enjoy wasting the boosters you got and try for that weapon skin again. Enjoy more RNG yay my favorite! /sarcasm

The same reason why people pull one more lever, place one more bet, drink one more drink, take one more hit.
MMO developers are no different than any other company out there, they'll feed on their consumers until they're dry.

This is why this complaint sounds ridiculous to me:
Producer: Hey guys, we've got random boxes of goodies here! Each one might contain something rare and cool!
Consumer:
Producer: Sure thing!
Consumer: Give me all the boxes!
Producer: Ummm sure, you can buy as many as you want.
[Consumer proceeds to spend $200 on boxes]
Consumer: WTF! Why didn't you stop me!
Producer:
Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?
omg priceless!

It doesn't matter if you spent cash or not. You're here complaining that you lost Gems in this case not cash on gambling. That's like saying the sky is blue. That's how gambling works. What's the problem? You want better odds of winning? Feel free to poll the casinos around the world about that and see what their response is.

*twitch twitch*
