I just realized that Lineage 2 was Ultima Online 2 .......

LlamfiaLlamfia Member UncommonPosts: 12

After all these years it finally dawned on me that the game I have been waiting for (ultima online 2) already came out 8 years ago.

I started playing Ultima Online when I was 8 years old and quit around AOS. The game went downhill after Richard Garriot sold Origin to EA.

I picked up Lineage 2 in the 6th grade and I have played the game ever since. There is something about the game that is very nostalgic and keeps me coming back, (Mostly to the older versions of the game (from c1-c6). I just realized that Richard Garriot was the executive producer for this game as well.

Weird to think that my two favorite MMO's of all time were made by the same guy and it took me so long to figure this out.

I don't really agree, otherwise I was already playing it instead of coming back to UO ;)

LA2 is not a sandbox like UO. There is not so much freedom like UO. Ther eis no customer player housing (non instanced) to make this world yours (at least it was so..dunnow if they added it??)

Still, it's a good game giving also some good nostalgic feeling, but calling it UO2 is definitely too much .. ;)

It's not UO, but it's old school in the sense that it gives you the sense that you're in a virtual world instead of a game. Most modern releases have lost that feeling, perhaps because it isn't very popular or perhaps because it's too hard to achieve.

The game reminds me of the time before instances etc

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

Virtual world? Maybe in the endgame...

I played it when it was released for Southeast Asia, and I have to say, it plays no different from Vanilla WoW, Silkroad, ROSE, etc. Talk to standing NPCs to obtain a laundry list of quest, go forth and talk/kill/collect, then report back when required. Admittedly I never got past 20 because ultimately I preferred WoW.

I don't think we've played the same game then. The L2 I played in it's early chapters had practically no quests at all beyond the two profession choosing ones. Guild and friends meant everything, PvP was open everywhere and you could kill anyone. Levelling was ... I did a little excel sheet at the time to calculate how much it would take me to max from 65 to 75, the end result was a bit short of 6 months playing 12+ hours per day (which meant 2-3hours sleep for me).

I practically collapsed after a few months, so the switch to WoW and the 4-5hours raids per day was relaxing in comparison. And WoW was a lot harder than it is now. Then again, L2 was a lot harder than it is now, so ... (and full of quests from what I've seen).

Yeah you're probably right. It released in 2008 in SEA as "Lineage II:The Chaotic Throne". I always wondered what the first tale was like.

Except that past early quests there really weren't that many in Lineage 2. You were forced to grind mobs against the really steep levelling curve. I think at one point, I had to kill over 2000 golems, or something, for the next level and this was not even the mid-point in the game, but mid-30s. There were limited number of  those golems, others hunted them because they provided the best time-xp ratio. Also, you were forced to wait in between fights, if you needed to heal and recover. At that point, teaming up would have been equally pointless, because that was the best time-xp ratio. There were few dungeons that were nice looking and kind of fun, but there were insanely long levelling grinds to get to them with no hardly any quests or any other content besides killing mobs.

I tried to play L2 in a private server with few friends. The server had increased experience and drops (7x) and even with that the levelling was a huge bore after level 50 or so. I suppose you need to be a certain type of player to enjoy these type of grinds. I know few of my friends liked it.

it's not just UO or L2, a lot of older games have that effect on people

    for some it's EQ/EQ2

for me it's asheron's call. no other game ever hit that spot

I think it's got to do with several things:

1 - brutal difficulty (for all of these games)

2 - absolute necessity to have a guild or group. it was close to impossible to solo or at least very hard

I remember soloing in AC only because I was a life mage and because they used to be so OP that it wasn't even funny

3 - huge mostly non instanced worlds (for the most part) - because instances were not really invented yet

4 - no endgame, WoW invented that and I never enjoyed that. all games followed Wow suit after that tho

of all MMOs as of late, only GW 2 could attract my attention, but only because I wasnt ready to commit or pay money per month and because I got it as a present. it's a good solo/casual MMO and has nice features, but not even close to MMOs of the past.

Altho I guess I don't give enough credit to Eve, which is in the league of its own. I have a love/hate relationship with that one

I review lots of indie games and MMORPGs

I tried Ultima Online but did not play it long. I have played alot of Lineage 2 though. Keep an eye on ArcheAge because the creater Jake Song said that he got the games concepts from Ultima Online and Lineage 2.
