Don't know what to say about the prices.  Are they good or bad?  I'm still going to be a subscriber after it goes F2P though so I guess it doesn't really concern me that much.  What does concern me though is some of the restrictions placed on F2Pers.  Though I can understand why some of them exist.  The game probably wasn't built with F2P in mind.

Well some things subscribers won't buy (some will though).  But it is clear that subscribers will feel a need to spend RL $$ to feel socially acceptible amonst their peers.  This drives other players away.

To go a bit further, some of the goodies are pure P2W.  Crime Lord packs give near top tear items + unique pets/mounts.  Gambling at it's fine'ist.  Didn't GW2 just back down from gambling lockboxes? yeah. (Packs in SWTOR are the equivalent of Black Lion Chests in GW2, which cause a big contraversy in itself.)

Those costs make Activision-Blizzard look like a saint amongst MMORPGS, which they are not.

The whole monetization of Star Wars is really dumb.  This game had wings early on, but they fell off.  New implanted wings were initially seen as a boon, but now they just melt when exposed to room temperature.  BOO LUCAS! .. BOO EA! .. /sorrow

This game will never "more than compete with WoW" (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/306437/bioware-old-republic-will-more-than-compete-with-world-of-warcraft/)

No one wil need or be able to use everything on the list, so the $300 bucks is a red herring. Most of the prices seem reasonable to me.

You are right, since most stuff is per character it's more than $300. Unless you go monthly sub.

  • tiefighter25tiefighter25 Member Posts: 937

I started adding up how many cartel coins it would cost for a FTP player to lift the EA imposed restrictions to create the equivalent of a subscriber's account for a month. When I began to exceed 15,000 cartel coins, I just stopped.

  • daisdais Member UncommonPosts: 95
The amount of money people are willing to spend on virtual goods just astounds me.  As an example I sold a pair of bracers in Diablo 3 for $390.  That was ONE piece of armor, and your character has 13 slots for equipment.  I guarantee someone will go through that whole list and buy everything just so they can have it.  From looking at it though none of the items look too unreasonable, although the massive volume of stuff they are charging players for is still not making me want to return.  The fact that they were even considering charging for a quickslot bar just tells me that they are really pushing the absolute limit on what they think they can get away with.

LOL. If you want equivalent of subscriber's content, the best is to subscribe... it's way cheaper.

Edit. With a minimum 500 CC monthly with sub, the discount ~$5, the price of sub is going to be $10... :)

This highlight the main scheme with their F2P model. Top that with the gambling boxes and you'll get the full picture.

I did not think they could do worse than they were and still they continue to amaze me of how wrong they can be and deeper they are digging the grave. I don't know, seriously how can the people in charge be that clueless? There's some evil at work...

Price wise stuff isn't bad, but a lot of the restrictions are still big iffy points for me (limited warfronts and the likes). At least its not a complete rip off I suppose, even if its not amazing either.
  • ghettocelebghettoceleb Member UncommonPosts: 104

Maybe They should have just left the game alone, and just lowered sub prices to about 5 very competitive dollars.

Also just wanted to say Some good points in this thread.

Here's the thing though. EA said they were going to FTP because 40% of their exit poll respondants said they didn't want to pay a monthly subscription (dubious wording I know). They said in light of this data, they were going to go to a Freemium system which would allow people to play the parts of the game they enjoyed without a monthly subscription.

The way this system is designed, it is a very punishing Trial/Demo to level 50 with absurdly high prices for anyone to play anything besides the class stories after level capping. You say then they should subscribe, I say that 2 million people already tried that route and decided to unsub. That would lead me to guess that this punishingly restrictive FTP setup which is designed to force people to subscribe will not be terribly succesful in accomplishing that. And there's a big but...

But, EA has stated that they expect to garner half of their revenues from the game from the cash shop. Since not much of that money will be coming from FTP players, that means they expect that revenue to come from subscribers.

I would think that woud concern you since you obciously enjoy hte game a lot. EA is essentially banking on subscribers to pay on average $30 a month for SWTOR. To assist that end, expect to see the game design to change to push players towards the cartel shop. Eventually you wind up with a sub fee and monthly cash shop bill, the anathema of any MMORPG payment model.

It's just really bad. My opinon of course.

Ha ha, yah, i guess someone really smart at EA figured out:

    1) we need 500k subs OR

    2) we can still do with 250k PAYING 30$! Hmm, how to push that? I know: pseudo F2P (rofl) and CASH SHOP! Brilliant!

  • Ambros123Ambros123 Member Posts: 877
Can't say too suprised.  I saw with DA:O and ME2 how any sort of cash shop will go and can't saw was too thrilled on that.  What was it... 5 bucks or whatever for a 30 min story thing with ME2's research Geth site?  After that I got fed up with EA's DL store and why haven't still touched ME3.

From Blaine Christine, Senior Producer, Cartel Coins will go on sale, 450 coins for $4,99.  So the price list is about right.  10 bucks a month to unlick Warzones? ($2.50 / week) ?  What a joke.

Star Wars: The Old Republic goes free-to-play on November 15

by Larry Everett on Nov 8th 2012 11:02AM

    http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/11/08/swtor-launches-free-to-play-on-november-15th-no-rumor/

What if you are new to the game and haven't earned preferred status yet? Blaine Christine explained in our tour that getting to preferred status is as easy as by buying an item at or above the $4.99 price point in the online store. And at launch, the fewest number of Cartel Coins you can buy is 450 at $4.99, although the team reserves the right to add items under the $4.99 price point in the future.

I guess that implies some kind of bulk rate might apply, but I doubt the savings will be astronomical.

Well, in my opinion, these forums are full of cheapskates and freeloaders, so it's not surprising to see the outrage caused by companies who expect people to pay for entertainment.

After all, in the age of pirating movies, books, games, software, music, satellite TV,  etc. you must be crazy if you expect to make a profit by providing entertainment. It's all free or nothing right ?

More or less you have to pay roundly $50 upfront to have the perks allowing you to play the game conveniently for one character.

That's more than $15 and it does not takes into account the weekly pass required for other content.

I have a question on unlocks.  If you unlock the extra action bars is it for all of your characters?

If you want to play conveniently - sub. You can play 1-50 without paying a penny. You can try PvP and Space missions and FPs. You want more stuff? Sorry, but nothing in this world is free nor should be.

You obviously love SWTOR.  But lets hold off on saying the F2P version of 1-50 will be great.  It all depends on how much they nerfed XP, assuming they did, for F2P.  If it turns out that given all of the limitations you need to grind entire levels killing mobs or buy XP pots, then the experience won't be well received.

I actually don't see problem here. Outleveling content in SWTOR was my biggest problem /grin. We have to find out first how much lower xp is and what is the difference between F2P, Preferred and Sub. I could not find answer to this question yet.

Most of the F2P players will probably get to preferred status pretty fast when they spend 5 bucks in the game.

I will be looking for answers here.

For me, I have never played the game at all, never spent a dime on it, I am going to give the FTP version a try and probably wont spend anything on it though I will give myself a $10 limit to spend if I do enjoy the game.   The only reason I am going to try it is because of the fact that it is going FTP.

Havent your heard, some of the best things in life are free? (Please note, that does not mean I am saying SWTOR falls into that category)
