I would not watch the same movie over and over again, without seeing another movie. The same applies to games.

I don't play mmorpg's that play out like movies and don't treat it like linear games I go and complete.

Rather like virtual world in which I will play with my character "living" for few dozen hours per month for prefereably year or more.

I also don't watch one movie over and over. That would be way too boring :) Actually 99% of movies I saw - I saw only once and have no desire to see again.

I personally don't care how many games people play.

For me though, I prefer one very deep game that I can really get into, and a game like that is pretty much the only game I will have time for.  I miss those days.

A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.

Because one may uncover ugly things, surprising things, and sometimes little wondrous things.

So do a dozen. In fact, if you play a dozen games, the chance is higher.

And i do. A game is a game. I don't need another world .. i already have one. MMORPG .. G=games .. are games for me. They serve no different purpose than games in another genre .. to entertain.

You make playing  a MMO ""living" for few dozen hours per month for prefereably year or more" sounds too much like work. Do you keep a schedule and go to meetings too?

It is still a game. I am playing.  Playing to be a character in virtual world doing various things.  Yes I agree this is entrertaiment.  When I was playing mmorpg like that I was entertained.

Maybe it sound for you like a work.   It did not felt for me as a work.   It was fun. If it was not I would not play it. Kinda logical no?

I agree with what the op is saying, and I can see it when people talk about games they no longer play. If they aren't apologetic, they seem to expect that they're going to get grilled on why they are no longer playing the game. There doesn't seem to be any reason for this, we all know we're going to hop games, or play multiple games at any given time, but that mentality persists.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

For some reason when an MMO gamer tries a new game, they often feel this need to explain why they're NOT playing every other game on the market.  They have to justfy it by explaining the problems of the game they're not logging into that day.

Imagine we did this with other types of games.

Gamer 1: Hey brah, let's play chess.

Gamer 2: Dude, I thought you played checkers.  You've been playing checkers for 5 years.

Gamer 1: No way, Checkers sucks now.  The devs made the "King-Me" buff way too OP ... they can move backwards - screw that.

No, what really happens is they go: Nah, I don't feel like playing checkers today.  They don't have to explain why checkers sucks - they just feel like doing something else.

The reality is that the idea that a person needs to pick one MMO to play is just silly.  There's nothing wrong with playing multiple games and you don't even have to bash the one your'e not playing at the moment.  Just because you're playing a different or new game doesn't mean that there was something wrong with the one you're not playing at the moment.

This is exactly how I feel about Vendetta Online.  It's not that I "need" to play only one game, or that I feel it somehow is a superior modus than playing many games; it's just that there is so much depth in VO, it's pretty much the only online game I have time for.  I've found this to be true for the better part of a decade.

It's not so much that I need to play only one game as much as I don't need to play anything else.  I am completely satisfied with VO.  Sticking to just one online game with its own persistent universe also means that when I play, my energy is conserved.  I wouldn't develop plans that take 18 months or more to execute if I didn't feel confident that that world was where I wanted to be and that it would be around long enough for them to come to fruition.  I am more than an observer; a part of myself is imprinted on that hypothetical universe.

What it all means is something for greater minds to discover.

Its not a fallacy, more like just how some people are, and some people aren't.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

Personally, I simply can't play more than one MMO at a time - I try to keep aware of what's going on across the industry, but my attention always gets completely sucked into one game and any others I have installed just languish with little interest in going back.  But that doesn't mean I expect everyone else to behave the same way.  Everyone's different.
