I love tournaments, just not how PVP is associated with the, usually. I'm also not a fan of instanced, GB type pvp.
However, i do love mini-games and such. So, why don't mmos have more events where a competition of, well anything, occurs?
For example, WOW's pet battle systems looks cool and if you played Pokemon like me as a child (obvious inspirations from it), then you know the importance of tournaments in that game.
How about mini-game activities. Keg Brawl in GW2 is quite nice and it acts like a sport. Why not have a event where teams play against each other. This can also be said for other sports games came up with.
And what about a gladiator arena. If pvp balance is too much to handle, remove all gear from the participants and give th pre-set weapons and abilities, just like Gladiators.
It doesn't have to be just player vs player. I was watching TV this morning and one of the Harry Potter movies was on. It was about, yes you guessed it, a special wizard tournament where the partipants face a series of tasks. What if these kinds of pve challenges where used?
IMHO, this would be a great way to infuse player conflict content without using PVP or e-sports stuff (which i don't like sorry). And it would still have the same kind of vibe. The tournaments could be monthly, bi monthly, tri monthly, etc. Some, like the above could be more casual and simple. Some could even be really hardcore with harsh consequences if you lost. And obtaining things like a statue on a "Hall of Champions" would be the cherry on top to me.
So, what do you think?
