Was purchasing Alpha Squad worth it?

7star7star Member Posts: 405

I'm thinking about jumping in. I read the other thread and -- as usual -- there are mixed reviews :D

I'm thinking about buying and jumping in, but I'll need to clear a couple of things off my HD, so it's a hard decision for me at the moment.

If you have bought Alpha Squad and spent a few hours playing, do you feel your money has been well spent?

Okay, you slackers didn't really pony up the info I was looking for. So I bought and got in game and realized I need a freaking tutorial. You beta players must be playing right now.

I ran around and managed to destroy a vehicle and then I got killed by a sniper. I don't really know how to find the action.  Using M and redeploy to instant action just pops me down in a base where I might get shot or not. So I'm going to figure out what this game is now.

Another question -- after having only played about 10 minutes -- how is this different than Tribes Ascend?  Better for you or not? Why?

Personally I only tried Tribes Ascends a bit, but generally didn't enjoy it.

    Planetside 2 is great tho.

The best way to figure out where the action is, is to press the Insert key, it should autojoin you to a squad.  Then you can check the map to see where most of your new squad is.  Then either get in a vehicle and head out there, or use the instant action buttons if ones near where your squadmates are.

I haven't bought it, I'm not even sure if I'll be spending much time playing the game. In one way it's a way to say I beta tested this game with the camo & title, but big deal otherwise. I beta tested both Planetsides (in both closed & open), the status doesn't really matter to me.

i am in beta, its pretty good. there is a little learning curve but once you get it down its pretty easy and you will find action. I havnt bought alpha squad because it is a f2p title and not sure really if its worth it to me. I havnt checked into cash shop or how there running the f2p aspect subbing vs not etc.

i really wouldnt recommend buying alpha squad until you know whether your even going to stick with the game, unless of course you have more money than you know what to do withimage Planetside 2 is but a shadow of Planetside 1, the only improvements seem to be graphically, which is a bit of a shame because Planetside did quite a few things really well. I am also waiting to see how much of this game is going to be microtransactioned, i guess its inevitable that F2P games will have more and more of their content/functionality purchaseable, but all i've seen so far of Planetside 2 is that its all about the money and not about the gameplay, why else would they cut so many corners? granted Planetside1 is a P2P game, but surely after all these years then its sequal should be not only better but also have improved functionality, which is something im just not seeing, im seeing less functionality, less choice, and thats even assuming your willing to fork out for the 'extras'  So, is Alpha Squad worth it, not in a million years. But i don't see that the game is really ready for release either. image

Well worth it. if you want thrilling pvp conflict. It's hard to beat seeing a squadron of 5 or 6 jets flying information (yes I saw formation) down the backside of a column of 15 tanks.

Hold your horses i would say.I know its tempting but in the current state, the game is a steaming pile of shit. They need a miracle to fix the game to a reasonable state for the launch.

I bought it and I played for like 4-5 days.  I don't play it anymore.   They took the old game PS1  and put in BF3  short time to kill like mechanics into the game and I think that screwd up its synergy.  I feel like the game is disjointed and a hybrid that's sum does not equal its parts.  Like its not the be best of both games.   Big fights feel like meat grinders where  every one is just respawning then dieing and whoever 's respawn is closer  wins.    One of the contiuenents, Esmire, was designed for bigger zerg fights and no one plays there. I think they have a major problem in which big  fights are signifcantly less enjoyable then smaller fights and a really short time to kill may work in a traditional FPS but does not work in a large world MMO.

I think you guys are overly negative. First of all, the Alpha Squad package is worth it no matter how you look at it - you get 40$ worth of station cash anyway, and you can use that in other SOE games right away if you want to. So there is definitely good value in the deal.

Now, on to the game, I've been in the beta for a good few months now, and I've seen it undergo many big changes. They've remade the map layout, the capture mechanics, massively adjusted spawn mechanics and generally tried to balance everything. The developer team has really been a part of the community and even Smedley posted a lot on the forums, actively partaking in discussions. No matter your quarrel with this guy from previous experiences with SOE, they've really listened and actually made changes based on feedback. This has probably been really hard due to the extremely vocal minority of old PS1 veterans that flame the forums constantly claiming to represent all of the playerbase.

It's true that the game has loads of issues, mainly performance wise, but this is improving with almost every patch. I'm not sure if the devs can sort out all of the bugs that haunt the game in it's current version come launch in 15 days, but as for the game itself it is really enjoyable. I haven't enjoyed an FPS game this much for a long, long time. They have three enormous continents, a good variety of weapons and vehicles that feel right, and a helpful and cooperative (for the most part, anyway) playerbase. So if they can sort out the lag and bugs, I'm confident this game will be a success.

My tip to those of you who are confused: Join a squad that uses the in-game voice comm. You'll find the open squads by pressing 'M' and pressing the social tab. If you have a mic, don't be scared to ask questions. People are more helpful than you think.

    Snip...

For what it's worth only a few people said it wasn't worth it. It looks like a lot, more than normal just want to see the results.

Some good constructive feedback right there in red LOL.

Some people have issues while alot of others do not, the ONLY issue I had was trying to download the game, Explorer can be a pain in the ass but when I got into the game it runs very very well and is a ton of fun , well worth it on my end anyhow.

The social aspects are there , sandboxy world , tons of freedom and tons of action if you know where to go, and grouping in the game is encouraged , it's nice to work towards a common goal unlike some other games that shall not be named!

Sandboxy world, true, you can go where ya want... there's no point to however, either go to the main base zerg fight, or be bored out of your skull..

freedom? not sure where this feeling comes from

action? Sure if you like meaningless lagged out firefights that don't seem to matter if your there or not, whoever has the numbers wins

common goal? Capture the base, rinse and repeat in an endless linear base capture system that ensures a complete stalemate because they removed back capping, which wasnt even back capping, the morons just left the bases before cleaning them out.

Hi, here's a ship, but ugh, yeah you can only fly it to that blue point, cuz anywhere else is meaningless, cant cap it.. yeah thats freedom of choice alright..

game shifted since oct, used to be fun.. game is a controlled piece of crap made to grab cash on unlocks.. and not even close to launch ready..

balanced... lol good luck if your not Vanu, massively overpowered cuz no one wants to be them in the first place.

Iam so happy I did not buy the Alpha Squad pack....thx anyway for your contributions. Iam not investing into the game if unlocks are not account based, they get no money from me.

I like these points, I really do, they are great. Lets apply them to every game out there, BAM suddenly every game is pointless. Damn I feel so sad, what did you do :<

Dumbest post of the month? Very well could be !
