I haven't played Dust 514 yet, but I am a EvE player. I'm assuming it will work in a similar fashion to EvE from what I've read on the internet.
You start of by choosing a faction (race). This doesn't affect what is available to you as you can train cross-faction skills. You improve your skills by setting a skill you want to learn (For example, sniper rifles - i'm making skill names up...), which you will then get X amount of skill points per Y seconds. This continues to increase even if you are not logged into the game. Each skills have about 5 ranks, with rank 1 being the quickest to learn, and for each rank, it will take longer. For example, rank 1 might take 15mins to learn, rank 2 will take 1 hr, rank 3 = 3hrs, rank 4 = 3 days, rank 5 = 20days.
As you kill enemies ingame, you will gain additional Skill points which goes towards what you are currently training, making it faster to learn a particular skill if you play a lot and is skillfull.
The other side of progression is your equipment, unlike other FPS games, you don't have a class where weapons are automatically handed to you when you spawn (except maybe newbie guns). You must use your ISK to purchase these equipments, and when you die, your weapons gets destroyed (or enemies can salvage it). As you earn isk, you are able to purchase more equipments better suited to what you want to do, and even start buying tanks and such to use in combat.
