Remember that even with expansions, that come maybe once every 6 months (they said 6-9 months, and I'm guessing 10 months...heh) GW costs less than a normal $10 a month MMORPG.
Second, expansions ARE optional. Remember that you always have access to previous skills, which are pretty well balanced: further expansions won't make the new skills more powerful than the old ones (just more varied). I'm sure there would be some that would be NICE to have, but not necessary, as that would defeat the game design's purpose.
And also remember that everyone pretty much has access to everywhere that's essential already... towns, outposts, skill trainers, armor crafters, the worldwide on-going tournament, the arenas, and the guild hall. I'm guessing an expansion will simply make more PvP and PvE map options...(maybe additional classes)
