Mixed feelings on F2P

So, I like many of us here bought SWTOR on release with high hopes. I was, kind of disappointed. It wasn't a BAD game by any means, just not up to par with other MMOs, so I quit and it sort of fell out of my view and didn't bother looking into updates or anything of that sort.

Now that it's going F2P, I sort of have mixed feelings. While the game would be worth the cost to play and would give me the chance to check all the updates and such without having to waste money on a game I may still not enjoy. I've also seen many decent games fall into steaming pools of waste and bile because of free-to-play communities. Is bioware doing anything to prevent that that I've missed? thoughts, comments, ect on how the community might be effected.

It will be F2P so there will be no cost for you for trying it and get your own opinion about how the game changed etc. Asking others opinions on this forum is equivalent of asking to get discouraged from trying it.

Ill still try it, no matter what others say. I'm just wondering general opinion on how F2P might effect the community and game. I've, personally, never seen a game thats improved after going F2P.

Ive also been thinking of coming back to swtor however my reasons for leaving were mostly because guild drama and a bad computer. However I do remember the fun times and the emotions my sith warrior story brought up.  I felt a NEED to kill my master in the end not just because the story said so. Also killing a whole jedi elclave down to the last padawan on the last planet made me feel Powerful. No other MMO has given me those emotions.

I am just looking to play as many of the classes as possible do some pvp and dungeons and hope that this game turns out like DCUO is and has content coming out  pretty fast.

To me its like dating an old girlfriend.  Nothing new or shiny but no drama and you know what your getting out of it.

Though I do think its stupid not to play it till you gone through every class story as I find them at the quality of DA and ME. If you just do that your getting a singleplayer game for free. that's a good bargain.image

I just wish I had some friends to tag along with. Maybe I should make a returners guild image

    *Edit*

I think DCUO improved a lot since going FTP.  Yes you have to shift through the garbage to find a jewel of a friend ingame but I think the content thats coming out and the amount of people playing to keep it active makes it a good deal.

Questing with friends in SWTOR has a complete new dimention. I love the spectacor mode for class quests.

People here say that it's a solo game, try it with friend(s). It's such a big difference. And I am talking about going through whole game with friends.

Edit: I had the same feeling as you in my warrior story. I actually hit ESC many many times. The cutscene of placing lightsaber to his fat belly is priceless.

Azrael I'd suggest you do try it , that the 1-50 leveling the first time around is a somewhat linear , but fun experience and well worth even just a box cost they had at launch. They simply didn't have enough content to warrany a monthly sub fee in addition.

And this is coming from a "hater" and someone who has no problem with sub fees as was an beta EQ player and fan of the genre since.

(My "hate" for SWTOR is for their huge failings in the PVP dept and for spending so much time and money on the voice portion when the gameplay portion was so obviously lacking for longevity, in other words could have been so much better for the time and money they spent on the game).

Now as to your post I do agree that F2P is a dangerous route. For the it allows the cesspool trolls in who make communities far far worse who wouldn't be there if it cost something.

I'd say LotRO has weathered the F2P with still having s decent crowd , but I know other F2P communities I've seen make WoW Barrens chat look like a civil discussion between adults.

Time will only tell how SWTOR goes.

Just my personal opinion is completely F2P invites Reddit/SA/cesspool of cesspool in a overwhelming percentage unfortunately.

Even a minor barrier to entry , 20 dollar entry free with no sub or 5 dollars a month or somethhng , helps weed that out to a huge percentage because it requires effort/a credit card/and at least a few bucks.

I would have tried it again with resonable limitations.  But they've got so many regarding their F2P model I doubt I could even keep up with them.  I'd have to print out a list and keep it in front of me just to remind myself what I couldn't do, have, or whatever while I played.

Swtor is not the worst game I've ever seen, and during my short time with it I wouldn't have called it "bad".   But mediocre could be the perfect word to sum it up and that's comparing it to mmos that came out the better part of a decade ago.  Meanwhile its defenders love it because?  It's Star Wars and there is nothing wrong with loving that franchise.

However we all know if this were a fantasy game with the exact same mechanics, graphics, animations etc, it would be far far worse off now than it even is.  Some love it because its Star Wars, and many more including those mentioned, just want a sci fi mmo to play.  Now imagine if we had a good sci fi mmorpg.  A really good one.  People are hungry for it and something that's truely novel in its mechanics.  One of these days we may just get it.

But as for Swtor, I have to even give F2P a pass.  Its free, and I'm giving it a pass.  That's really saying something and I'm not alone.

I don't really have any friends who play MMOs. I've met a few people in the different games I've played, but they're just people I know from the games..
